Great info as always, Sean! It's funny, earlier this week I was about to fall into the trap of fussing more with my website and writing a bunch of new portfolio pieces for the 3D printing niche idea we talked about last week. And then I realized this was yet another stall tactic and decided it was time to spend most of my time sending out LOI's and pitching in my more general category of technical writing. So my compromise is I'm going to write an article a week on that niche over the next few weeks, and then start adding that to the mix of my regular outreach stuff.

@@LocationRebel thanks Sean! Recent months have shown me just how much I suffer from "Shiny New Object Syndrome." Well, I don't suffer from it; I rather enjoy it! But therein lies the problem lol. I have put my February goals in writing and have joined an accountability group to keep me on course. It's an easy trap to fall into non-productive things that capture our attention, but being aware of it happening really is a game changer. I've got a plan for the next few months that I believe will give me the balance I need to meet my goals.

@@LocationRebel I would also love to see this. There's so much about the initial steps of setting up a portfolio site, but past that.. I feel like once I connect with clients who want to work with me, I'll be like that proverbial dog chasing the car: I don't know what I'd do if I caught it. Being uncertain of the onboarding process, structuring and sending invoices, and generally how to not look like an unprofessional imposter is a huge mental barrier for me.

If we aren’t to the point where we want to tackle a website but still would like to be able to provide some samples of our writing, would it be a stretch to create samples in PDF form that we could then offer to send when we write the letter of introduction?

Quick question - I have three niches that I’d like to write about. Is it ok to create one website that showcases my abilities in different formats for each of these 3 niches or should I pick one niche only? For example a page banner on the website that reads “travel” and “beauty” and “food” with samples of each sub topic found under that tab. I hope that was understandable - perhaps my writing career is over before it began! 😅

Hi, I know you didn't ask me, but I'm a writer with 20+ years experience. I think categories for your samples on one website is the way to go. What if a potential client might want to hire you for more than one category? Finding all your stuff on one site gives a more complete picture and shows the range of expertise you have.
