I'm using .28 40# braid on a spinning rod for fishing here in Finland. I can't cast as far but definitely saving money in lures. The snags are crazy here in the river.

Are you using a braid backing with your fluoro are is it straight fluoro? If you're using braid backing with fluoro leaders what are the combos you're using I.e., 30# braid with 14 # Fluoro. Awesome video on diameter of line focus instead of on the poundage. Thanks.

I've had sooo many random snap offs with 12 to 14 lb test flouro, usually on the hookset. It's not even worth it losing so many fish. Braid to flouro, shakyhead, Texas rigged craws, dropshot. I think 17 is the lightest I'll go because of the inconsistency of lighter flouro.

What i am still confused about ... Is line pound test relative to the size of fish you are catching .... My gear is a 5000 spinning rod, with a short 10-30 grams medium- light cast with braid line 15 lb test. In the pond i am fishing there are monster fish i am afraid to cast deep avoiding losing the lure or break the rod. Do i go for it and try to cast deep or i need to upgrade the rod and reel and the line as well ... Fishing nile perch

Do you trust the diameters stated, or do you use a micrometer to check the diameters? I'm in the UK, and generally a 15lbs monofilament line is 0.28 - 0.35mm, while 0.15mm is between 3.5lbs and 5lbs breaking strain. Very curious.
@JonR35 Жыл бұрын
He most likely referring to fluoro carbon. Say 15# fluro is .15 and mono 15 is like .22 thus is just an example not the actual diameter

Since I’m an average Joe fisherman I just do 8lb on my spinning rods and 12 on my baitcasters.
I feel like everyone uses fluorocarbon these days but I'm not a huge fan. I'd rather go braid then tie to a leader. Can you go with a stronger fluoro line that way?
@michaelace47393 жыл бұрын
I'm strictly braid on everything.

Can you explain when it's necessary to use floro, mono, or braid.
@WheelerFishing3 жыл бұрын
Just to keep it super simple and basic.. floro - most situations, sinking baits, sensitive baits mono - topwaters, some cranking plugs, floating / rising lures, etc braid - heavy cover vegetation fishing, lighter braid for finesse floating situations as well as braid to floro leaders on spinning rods for cast-ability/ sensitivity
@brady82572 жыл бұрын
@@WheelerFishing when you use mono is there a color you prefer? One of the big selling points of fluorocarbon is invisibility underwater and I was wondering which color of mono is least visible to the fish.

10 lb is plenty if you dont fish where there is a lot of snags and mono is the best. if you fish in gin clear trout streams you are better off with very low diameter 4-6 lb if you fish in a back water flooded area where the water is stained brown or green then you can get by with heavy line, 20 -30lb.

Good video. Yet here are a few other variables to consider, when choosing line size, type and strength... Fluorocarbon line not only is slightly smaller in diameter for the same pound test line, as compared to mono, but it is a better choice in clear water for its lower refraction rate (harder for fish to see). And fluorocarbon sinks, unlike a lot of monofilament line. So, depending on the application and circumstances that you are fishing, these are important factors to consider between the two lines before fishing one or the other, as well. Monofilament line will retain water over its use, compared to fluorocarbon line. Yet monofilament line will have more initial stretch or 'give', which is a good thing, when using faster action (especially extra fast action) rods. The new braids are great, too. Especially when one wants more 'feel', when the fish is playing with and/or starting to commit to the bait. Paired with a softer, 'crankbait' type of more moderate action rod, and as long as the fisherman is good enough a caster to fish it, braid can be a superior line choice within some applications, as compared to mono or fluorocarbon lines (yet easier for the fish to see, if you're not fishing it fast, for a reaction type of bite). PowerPro Maxquatro braid is fun to play around with, too.: Thinner and more supple than other comparable pound test braid, so easier to fish most of the time. It's still abrasion resistant enough under most circumstances. And it lets baits drop more naturally and get down deeper than larger diameter braid, while still maintaining the breaking strength of heavier pound test braids. Tight-lines!!!!!

Interesting timing for this video. What your talking about I’ve experienced some of what your talking about lately. Only, much lighter line/tiny lure fishing for bass. For example. I caugh the crap out of them on 4lb with a dropshot, upped to 6 on a simmilar rod same brand company same bait same weight, 1/2 the bites. Went back to 4lb, same everything else, back to almost every cast getting bit. This was a couple weeks ago here in Illinois. Clear water, 4-5ft visibility at least. I’m not sure if the action of the bait was hindered by the 6lb fluro, or if they’re line shy. Very hard telling. Thinking about being crazy and trying 2lb line so see what happens under the same conditions, with the same presentation, in the same area and see what happens. I’m not catching anything but small fish there anyways. Always a chance of a big one but 95% are small, and non tournament situation, it’s fun to test theories and get answers.

And something else to just throw-into the mix as an 'international' post script.: The Japanese have an entirely different system to measure their fishing lines with. Worth noting, for the "JDM" type of guy who buys that type of bass fishing equipment, where finesse can be key, and you need to know what equivalent "American" line to use.
