When it comes to line lb tests, you also have to remember that your rod flexes and bends. That takes a lot of shock out of the line so a 10lb line can easily handle a 20lb fish. Also, the more line you have out, the more weight the system can handle. Also, a 10lb fish that’s trying to get away, weighs a lot more than 10lb…which is where the reel drag comes into play. Also, a 10lb fish doesn’t weigh 10lbs in the water. You can catch a 50lb fish on 8lb test if you take your time and wear it out. Where the line strength matters most is when you get the fish to the boat. If you try to lift a 20lb fish on 10lb line, as soon as it is out of the water, the full weight comes onto your line, the rod is at maximum bend, so it’s not providing any shock protection and the line is at its shortest, so something has gotta give. It’s either gonna be your line or your knots. So get a landing net :)

I just started fishing seriously a few months ago and I’ve only been bass fishing about a month and I kept hearing about “bass are curious so throw different lures they’re stupid and will just try to grab it” and I didn’t realize how true that was till I fished a private pond and you could genuinely just tell by the way the responded to it that they had never seen anything like my crank bait, not only was it amazing to see the fish follow my lure all the way up to the shallow and be able to see them actually eat it but it also just gave me a chance to observe the bass behavior up close to what my lure would do

I wish this video came out last week :D I'm a total newbie and my baitcaster just came monday. Went down to the local tackle shop, got some trilene for the base of the spool, and then braid and fluorocarbon for main/leader. For lures I got worms in neutral, black and white silhouettes, and a couple of bright types, some crayfish and a popper. Based on that I asked the guy at the store what pound test. He said 10 would be fine. I get home, start practice casting in the yard and my line keeps snapping and launching my frog. (I did the tension setup, etc. so the lure drops to the ground when the switch is released). My knots are lasting. But the lines (both the braid and the fluoro snapped) casting the froggy. I lightly sanded the guides to remove any burrs. It's been a LONG time since I fished, and I grew up flycasting, so I don't think I'm snapping the line too hard on cast. At least I can time my thumb pressure so I don't backlash :)

And even though that frog has practically no weight, a bit of googling said to run it on 30 lb test. Doh. So I guess I gotta go get some stronger line.

Hey Tyler. One question. For someone like me that loves to fish. But doesn’t do it enough to have 2-12 rods with me every time I go on the water. That doesn’t have the money or time to go out and get a boat to fish off of and get to the best places in the water. What is the best money friendly rod and reel and line combo that can still help elevate my game. But not break my budget and make me feel like I overpaid for something that I don’t do enough?
@holymackerel337 ай бұрын
My mono line is usually 2lbs or 4lbs for my ultralight setups when I'm going for panfish with the kids. The lines I've used my entire life were all less than 10lbs. My grandpa taught me that I could bring whatever fish in that I caught with that line. The largest difference would be how much I could force the fish around. If I had very strong line, I could yank the fish out of whatever junk it's in. With less strong line I need to tire the larger fish before bringing them in. That's what you're talking about with line weight, right
@TylersReelFishing7 ай бұрын
Yes. If you’re throwing 10lb line around heavy vegetation, you’re gonna have trouble. Lots of situations where it benefits you to upsize
@holymackerel337 ай бұрын
@@TylersReelFishing yup. And today was proof of that. I was fishing on a lake at my in-laws. I've only ever fished a river. I'm not used to all that vegetation. My #00 mepps thunderbug (that I just took out of the package, the first cast) was ripped off the 4lb mono line by something really big. Way bigger than the hand sized bluegill. I switched to the larger setup that I had with me and a pad crasher. That got taken and ripped a hole in the front of the frog. I switched to the pad crasher Jr and caught probably the biggest bass I've ever had, by a lot. I tried to keep my tip up and not let it run, but after a few seconds the line snapped. That one has 12lb mono. Since I'll be fishing there again, I'll have to get more/new gear appropriate for the area I'll be fishing. I'm very appreciative that you include gear in your description.
