This is all good advice and it worked on an HP 9014e. However, I think an important addition is once you have done all these steps, go into the printer settings and turn off automatic updates. I found that if you don’t , the printer will update its software and the cartridges will reject again

Sadly, this did not work for my HP OfficeJet Pro 9020. I have spent days trying to fix this problem. This is the first and definitely the last time I ever purchase HP. I have a 9012e. it is less than a year old. I suspect that all printers manufactured after a certain point had the ink-restrictive firmware installed at the factory, so resetting to factory defaults does not return the printer to a non-restrictive firmware. Just my guess.

I got a 9020 2 months and now I'm stuck with it, the cartridges are even more expensive in my country and I've been trying to find a way to solve this for the past weeks and so far the only solution that I found is a company that make some changes in the board that bypasses their system and it costs like 200 usd but I'd rather buy another printer than spending more money on this shit

I don't know if you have resolved this issue, but if you haven't - have you tried downgrading the firmware? I have a 7720 and was able to downgrade the firmware and now those cartridges are working again. I will never purchase HP ANYTHING, and will make sure everyone else I know doesn't either.

@@AndyGordon-p3x I just replaced the ink cartridges in my HP 6978 with a non-HP ink and it worked fine. I went to printer preferences and reset to factory defaults and also disabled all future updates. I then unplugged the power cord from the outlet for 5 minutes and then reconnected to power. I then had to reconnect to my Wi-Fi. After the printer went thru its start up cycle, a message was displayed on the screen which said the print quality may be poor due to using non-HP ink cartridges. The test print page was excellent! I will no longer be using the HP ink which cost 3X as much as the off brand.

On my HP Envy 4520 I had to go to the little satellite option in the printer window. Tap that & it gives you your IP address. Put that in your web address bar on your computer. Tap the last option..Setting.. on the top gray bar. Click Preferences on the left menu bar. You'll see HP Cartridge Protection. Click the Disable HP Cartridge Protection. Now you can use nonHP cartridges. Hope that helps someone as I had to figure it out on my own. This did nothing until I clicked that option.

I'm sure that this is good advice but the problem that many of us face is that we have already replaced the genuine HP cartridges with non-HP some time ago (i.e. before we saw this video) and therefore we are too late to take advantage of the instruction.

Well, I tried this but my printer's little window did not turn on when I plugged it back in. It would have helped if he also showed loading the cartridges. Needles to say; it didn't work. My HP Officejet 6700 still did not like the non-HP ink.

Didn't work for LaserJet Pro MFP M283cdw. So far, every time I purchase a laser cartridge, even with chips that claim to be accepted by HP, I have to remove the new chip and install the original HP chip. That also continually gives the message that toner is low.

What does unplugging BOTH ends of the power cable do? Are there electronics in the power cable? No, but even if there are, then why not just unplug it from the wall & leave it plugged into the printer? I understand removing the power from the printer. Also, the 3-5 minutes wait can usually be reduced by pressing the power button while the power cable is unplugged. This will drain the capacitors quicker. I've seen some HP printers that have, or did have, an option in their built-in web page to allow non-HP cartridges. However, there was a short period of time during which the printers were made to only allow HP cartridges. There may be a firmware update that removes that lock or the firmware update may create that lock. Do a search about your printer before updating the firmware. The biggest issue I have with HP printers is their insistence on using WSD ports for the printer driver instead of allowing an IP port. Windows is notorious for losing the printer when using a WSD port.

It looks like each new HP printer has its own trick to bypass the refill option. I guess, you will also need to decline the HP free ink option for the first 6 months, registration and automatic firmware "upgrade" option. Why not buy a Canon instead?

That won’t work anymore just buy the ink and squirt in into the old cartridges. You have to wait a day so the ink drops into printer. Do a test one to get it started. Works better than new ones!?
