I failed to discuss this in the video, but you do not necessarily need the boat off of the trailer to set your intake. You can leave the boat on the trailer, and still get this installed. Although it will be difficult to work around the bunks, axles, and trailer braces. As long as you are to keep the keel leveled out on both planes it doesn't matter what the boat is sitting on. ~ Nick

Just wanted to jump in and say everything about the build is awesome. And the OCD on the bolt lengths is next level 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 I love the way you built up the opening so you had a minimal line of epoxy. I recall an old friend having 3/4-1” under his. Looked amateur at best and he paid a so called pro to set it. Porpoised real bad at cruise but doing 90-100 it was rock solid. Keep up the good work. Cudos for getting your boy to roll his sleeves up and help 🙏🏼

Thank you Allen. I am glad that you appreciate the smaller details that I am putting into the boat. I really am big believer that all those really small details add up to make a huge difference. I’ve never pushed Trevor into my interests in the shop, but he is starting to show more interest daily. He’s good company, and eager to learn. ~ Nick

@AutoTechNick is the installation the same 4 a 19/21ft Daytona Eliminator Jet Boat. I sent my Berkeley Jet Unit 2 Greg Shoemaker in Corona California in January/February 2005 & sent him a Deposit of $3500aud . Had 2 fly 🪰 over from Australia 🇦🇺 2 collect it . Unfortunately it still wasn't ready then . Had 2 rely on friends in Corona 2 get on his back 2 finish it & a guy in Melbourne Australia 🇦🇺 brought cars in from the USA 🇺🇸 & he put it in the boot /trunk 4me . Best of everything. Owes me a small fortune

Very well done. Your due diligence, and research, show, by the quality, and accuracy, of your preparation, and installation. This is the best, hands on video, for nearly anyone, to install a Berkely/Dominator intake housing, in a fiberglass hull, successfully. Thanks for sharing, with the rest of us mere mortals.

It has been great to watch. Have you been studying engine weight effects? It is the 21st century. There are many options when addressing power to weight. Or you going for old school look?
@AutoTechNick
@AutoTechNick 10 ай бұрын
You are correct. There are a lot of great engine options out there with low weight and plenty of power (can we say LS)... But I like my jet boats with a good ol' fashioned Big Block! ~ Nick

Great job Nick! One question for you. Is there a standard size hole for Berkeley and Jacuzzi pumps or does each jet mfg use a different hole to set the jet into? I have a 1974 Hallett bubble deck with a jacuzzi and might want to switch to Berkeley. Thanks🇺🇸
@AutoTechNick
@AutoTechNick 9 ай бұрын
Unfortunately, the hole size for the intake is different between the Berkeley style and the Jacuzzi. You would need to do some glasswork to fill it in before doing the swap. ~ Nick

Thanks Nick looks like I’m stuck with the Jacuzzi. Great videos! Makes me want to do more than is needed on the Hallett.🇺🇸

As always excellent work! Somewhat disappointed as I had hoped to see the engine install also. Good things. come to those that wait???? I reinstalled my 454 in the boat a couple of weeks ago. Took a lot of time trying to get to what I "think" is right. Will find out when I see the next episode. Im stuck with an aluminum boat with a welded in intake. Which was put in out of whack. not centered on keel. I duo have a question, hopefully it wasn't addressed in the video. But why is the pump installed with a 4 degree down angle???. Why not level, why not two or 5 degrees??
@AutoTechNick
@AutoTechNick 9 ай бұрын
Thank you, Bryan. The next video on the jet boat will cover the engine installation, so don't worry.. lol. The 4-degree angle is built into the intake housing. If it were to be set at a different angle as you proposed it would change the location of the biting edge of the shoe relative to the keel. I am sure there is some wiggle room to fine-tune that, but considering the difficulty of getting it set I opted to keep it at the baseline setting it was designed for. Also if I altered the intake angle I would be effectively moving where the transom cover sits. Since I am reusing the existing holes to mount that, it wasn't an ideal option. ~ Nick

@@AutoTechNick thanks for the reply, I. think as usual I was unable to put down in words what my mind was thinking! I get the intake needs to be exactly where you put it. But my question is why is the 4 degrees built into it. Does that not cause a 4 degree down angle on the pump discharge?? Why isn't the pump shaft exactly parallel with the hull? Thanks gain for your time!!!!
@AutoTechNick
@AutoTechNick 9 ай бұрын
The 4 degrees does put the discharge nozzle at the same 4-degree angle. However, for my application, I will be running a Place Diverter droop that has 8 degrees of up pin angle, so that nets me a positive 4. One can utilize different snoots, wedges, and even the place diverter to dictate discharge angle. The 4-degree decline effectively lowers the discharge height in relation to the hull, thus lowering the thrust line and allowing the boat to ride dryer. I've also heard the argument that the 4-degree angle helps improve oil pan clearance, but that seems like a positive side effect to me, not the main reason why it was done. ~ Nick

@@AutoTechNick OK, thanks thats what I was looking for. Seemed redundant to put in a 4 degree down angle and then make a 4 degree wedge? Keep em coming, cant wait for the engine alignment!!!!!!!

Awesome video nick. And like one of the other comments i too have watched these videos several times each😅. One question. How did you deal with thw expoxy overspill on the back end of the intake ? I know the plate that the pump sits on hangs over the transom so at least in my boat theres not alot of room to get in there to smooth it out and the plate blocks thw entire view? Thanks again. No im ready to re do my intake!
@AutoTechNick
@AutoTechNick 9 ай бұрын
Thanks for the support! It's greatly appreciated! As you described I did not have enough space from the transom opening to the back edge of the intake to work the epoxy. If you re-watch the video you'll notice that I used the blue 2" painter's tape on the side and front of the intake on the hull. But in the back, I used 1/2" green tape. I also did not press the tape down very much on the gelcoat. I didn't want it adhered very well. I did this so the spill-out would not get on the gelcoat, but would still allow me to pull the tape. Once the intake was set I was able to carefully pull the green tape out piece by piece, which was covered with overspill. I then just worked the epoxy on the back side with my finger, for as far in as I could reach. ~ Nick
