Hey Curtis i have been watching your videos for a few months now and you have been a massive inspiration. I even made my first vlog on my first ever veggie garden which is something 6 months ago I would never have dreamed of doing. I have ordered you book which to my surprise I could locate and can't wait for it to arrive. Thank you for making your videos and keep up the excellent work you are doing.

I just sit here and shake my head when I see Curtis' rows and rows of spinach. This has been so hard for me to grow. Granted, I only ever seem to be able to plant it in June/July so that does not help. The little bit I planted late last fall did great over the winter covered in snow and came up very nicely this spring .. I never even watered it this spring. I have been working on New Zealand spinach, but man is it tough to get it to germinate. I did a little New Zealand last year during the summer and it did pretty well. I really like the taste and texture too. So hopefully I will get some sprouted in the next week or so.

Spinach has been a nightmare so far for me here in the Mediterranean, we can get quite hot days even during December and Januari which makes it bolt even then. Getting seeds to germinate in the field has been difficult as well for some reason. This year I'll give them a go in shaded wicking beds after summer.

6" spacing between rows is that not too close spacing if one would like to have full size mature spinach? I am thinking that full size spinach plants would need at least 8"x8" space to grow, or am I wrong? I am also thinking that 6" row spacing would be hard to de-weed with instruments between the rows without hitting the spinach plants. The hula hoe is at least 5 inches wide which would be hard to fit in between the spinach rows.

Hey Curtis, awesome videos and book. we watch you every night. Question, do you know off hand the average Yield you are getting per linear foot? or lbs per 25ft bed of spinach on your 5 row 30in beds? (I am doing 24in beds 4 rows, ill convert) Also CONGRATS on your Daughter!! we had a baby boy a few nights before you guys. Hope your sleeping more than me.. -Kevin

Kevin I think 24 inch wide rows is not a bad idea either for a family back yard gardener because a basic mid size 6hp rototiller digs up about 22 to 24 inch wide paths which is efficient to break new ground at this width with single passes. I guess 30" is more space efficient so it might be worth going wider. I had to break new ground in my new tennis court size garden this year and what I had to do is remove the outer tines / diggers and only dig 13" wide rows which made about 18" wide rows after I made several passes. My machine was not heavy enough or powerful enough for full 24" wide digging, maybe this spring I will do that and expand each row to 30 inches.

How soon do you think I can plant spinach in Richmond BC I am close to the Ocean and river which means sometimes my 8b climate zone is a 9 zone. Usually we last frost is March 15th though. I saw that some guides recommended planting it in February but that seems so soon. What do you think? Outdoors no hoop tunnel.
@offgridcurtisstone
@offgridcurtisstone 6 жыл бұрын
+HealthSupercharger you can plant that early, but your problem is not so much temperature as it is wetness.
@HealthSupercharger
@HealthSupercharger 6 жыл бұрын
True True the rain with the darker grey sunlight makes things not grow in late fall and early spring even though we have 5 to10 degrees c. Without greenhouses April seems like the first doable month for growing and October last month of growing season due to November being our wettest month of the year normally. If I did build a caterpillar tunnel it makes me wonder how effective that would be since the plastic would reduce even the little sunlight we get filtered by the clouds.

Curious... I see that your beds are along a neighborhood street. Do vehicle exhausts have any effect on your veggie plants? With no fencing around your garden, what keeps anyone from coming along and helping themselves, especially at night? That has to be a concern of urban farmers.

yikes, I planted spinach twice already in the past couple of weeks. I am going to have to nurse them to maturity in cool shady areas of my backyard that gets a lot of shade and areas I don't get too much shade, I am going to have to use shade cloth. My mustard greens are already starting to seed, spent Friday ripping many out, but I am not bothered by it, because I can get mustard seeds so cheaply I really don't care.
