I'm fairly certain the charcoal filtering method they use does not disqualify their whiskey from being called bourbon, as it's considered a subtractive process and not an additive one. The reason they're called Tennessee Whiskey and not Bourbon is a matter of branding, pure and simple.
@SippersSocialClub
@SippersSocialClub 5 жыл бұрын
That could very well be true. But this is what they say on their official website: "Jack Daniel's is not a bourbon - it's a Tennessee Whiskey. Jack Daniel's is dripped slowly - drop-by-drop - through ten feet of firmly packed charcoal (made from hard sugar maple) before going into new charred oak barrels for maturing. This special process gives Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey its rare smoothness."
@xkristoferx
@xkristoferx 5 жыл бұрын
You are kind of correct. To be labeled as a TN whiskey, the spirit must be made in TN AND be charcoal filtered. This applies to ALL TN whiskeys except for Benjamin Prichard's Tennessee Whiskey who doesn't filter but was grandfathered in. While TN whiskeys are "technically" bourbon, purest will say that the filtering process removes the bourbon naming. So saying that TN whiskey is branding is correct but it is also a law just like 50% corn and new barrels are laws for bourbon. source: from TN

@@xkristoferx All true. It meets all requirements to be called either spirit and chooses to be Tennessee Whiskey. Kinda splitting hairs at this point; I just didn't want the idea spreading that it doesn't qualify as bourbon. For some reason that's a common debate and many don't understand the underlying facts.

Jason Coates oh it’s 100% splitting hairs, for sure. Even the US and Canada refer to TN whiskey has “bourbon made only in the state of TN” butttttttttttt the Tennessean in me says it’s different. It’s like saying whisky and whiskey are different spirits. 🤷🏻‍♂️

When JD makes the barrels for the No7 they use wood from multiple areas because the different altitudes change what the flavor is and when they make the single barrels they use wood from the same location they do some other things to make it special but when you pick up a bottle of single barrel there are a few different ones. So if you pick up a bottle and like it then get another you may not. So when you get a bottle look at the ring on the top of the bottle it will tell you what type of barrel they used so you can get the same one next time.
@liamobryan6105

Hey, Jack Daniels Cooper here. The wood sits on our yard for roughly a year, before that it dries on another yard for 5 months. It’s all the same wood, the single barrel however, comes from the cooperage in Alabama and they are typically selected from the top of the warehouse where temperatures reach 90 degrees almost year round

The reason it isn't called a bourbon is due to being marketed as a Tennessee Whiskey. The charcoal is not considered an additive. Evan Williams is also charcoal filtered but is still a bourbon it's actually labeled a straight bourbon which is even stricter. Traditional JD fits all legal definition of a bourbon in the US.

Jeremy, Great job on ALL these JDs without a SpitBucket! Hope you enjoyed all that you poured for those 8 bottles. I think JD is a bourbon but they chose to differentiate themselves as a sub-category using the title of Tennessee whiskey. I don't consider using charcoal filtering as an additive. Just like toasted and heavily charred and barrel finishes (red wine and rum, etc.) as long as they use an oak barrel for at least 2 or 4 years doesn't disqualify as a bourbon. I keep thinking about trying a bottle of the Double Barrel (SiB BP) but here it is about $65 so I'd rather enjoy ECBP and OF 1920 Prohibition and even KC SiB 120. But will look to try at a bar sometime. Glad you did this BIG run. And there are still at least 3 or 4 more JD offerings to try. Cheers and congrats!!

I like number 7 and love the rye. I have smelled those many times and never smelled any of those things it is like the wine experts telling of all the notes they smell. They taste great however I can not smell what you do.

I drink gentleman jack exclusively and I can say I haven’t looked back in 3 years. I also drink about 3 5ths a year, so I consider myself an introverted version of the social drinker.

Great review! Just been moving into Jack from Jim Beam. It's definitely a lot lighter and smoother. I'm mainly into the flavored whiskeys and the apple liquer hits the spot for me. The first time I drank it, it was so much less punchy and potent on the tongue than the Jim Beam Apple, it fucked me right up without me being any the wiser. Jack has a stealth quality to it. So smooth you don't quite realize how powerful it is until you acclimate. Again, great review though. I'll definitely be checking out the single barrel variant when I see it.

Love JD. Would have been nice if you have quoted/remembered "Nathan (Nearis) Green", the master distiller who taught Mr. Daniel's the art, a recently unearthed story.

I'm a single malt scotch guy and not a fan of jack daniels, but I went to the jd plant in Lynch berg to see the production was amazing. We did a tasting in the cellars and the frank sinatra was actually incredible.

I agree with you about the Honey and Fire not Jacks best , When I visited the distillery last year they were releasing the Apple jack which I still have to taste. I drink the old no7 , love the gentleman and single barrel, but hate the Rye so all in all a good evaluation . cheers Lee from the UK

I was taught by a professional taster that when putting the drink to the nose, not to keep your mouth shut, or you will get a sniffing high and not get the true aroma. I always keep my mouth open with my tongue on the roof of my mouth while enjoying the wonderful aroma.

No, whisky is simply made with grain (corn, rye, barley and or wheat) water, and yeast. Those, combined with which type of cast used to mature it, is where all the flavor comes from.

Sippers Social Club, I forgot about that...I just went back and noticed that I had watched your review. I’m with Rob, in that he and I probably like the Heritage a bit more than you do. It’s a 90+ for me all day long. It was a very limited release and was gone in a matter of weeks, if not days. It would be someone’s very lucky day if they found one on the shelf today.

I know this is an older video, but just pointing out a small correction. Gentleman Jack is not fully double mellowed. That would be Jack Gold No. 27. The Gentleman Jack is mellowed through just a little more charcoal than No. 7, but not as much as Gold No. 27.
@SippersSocialClub
@SippersSocialClub 3 жыл бұрын
It says "double mellowed" on their official website, also says "Gentleman Jack undergoes a second charcoal mellowing to achieve exceptional smoothness". Thats where I got the information from.

For those of you who might not know, the only thing that gives jd it’s flavor is the wood from the barrel. I make barrels for Jack Daniels and all we do is burn the barrel and fill it with whiskey.

I think if you were to make a list of five basic all purpose whiskeys that are good for both drinking and mixing then Jack has to be on the list. The kind of whiskey that every home bar should have at least one of available. I would also put the original Crown Royal on that list
