In my mash I use corn, but I use a mix of rye and barley finely ground poured on top of the mash so that it floats. After a couple weeks give or take due to the weather/temp, the bubbles poking through the mix on top give me a indicator. Then I taste it and distill it. Say what you may, I still love a fine whiskey but I do not have the money for many. I love bourbon but I really loved the vat XO crown royal aged in cognac barrels with an Acid Blondie cigar. Basically means it must be produced at one distillery during one distilling season, aged a minimum of four years in a federally-bonded warehouse in new, charred oak barrels, and bottled at 100 proof (50% ABV). That's on top of the other legal requirements to call that whiskey a bourbon.

its not just the wood that adds flavour. a speyside whisky gets its unique flavour from the local water used to cut down the high strength grain to the traditional 40/35% strength before it gets stored in oak barrels. an expert whisky taster (who isnt me lol) could tell you the region a scottish whisky came from by the unique flavour from the water in it alone. the irish stout was a way to circumvent the malted barley tax as well. they just roasted the grain instead
@jakecullen10966 жыл бұрын
SteamMachine the water contributes less than 1% of the flavour. No distillery in speyside takes directly from the river Spey. Distilleries now 99% of the time in Scotland draw from the water table. Water effects the yield you get but not the flavour. (I work in the scotch industry)
@philipgibson20666 жыл бұрын
@@jakecullen1096 No distillery draws its water from the river. Im sure he meant local springs and wells, not the actual river itself. You work in the industry? cool. So you will know about famous wells like Collmans (Highland) and specifically the Cairngorms (Speyside) in and around the Macallan, Glenfiddich, The Glenlivet, Tomintoul and Braeval distilleries with Cairngorms being the highest spring water source in the UK and being low in minerals whereas the Colemans is high in certain minerals offering both very distinctive tastes? I dont work in the industry, I read a book and find it difficult to agree with water does not affect taste. But i am not an expert like you.

Guys, you need a patreon account, not going to donate because I'm broke AF but I would love to see more content from you and I'm sure others would donate!

3rd time I've watched this over the course of a year... After working in a whisk(e)y lounge for about 8 months I recognize and understand everything the noted on! And have sampled most of what was tried. Thank you for the video very very good job! Btw whistle pig 12 is amazing! Also Weller Antic is decent too!

Love the Hawthorne SpaceX shirt! My hometown is finally showing up. :) The entire series with Daniel is very easy to understand and makes sense. Such fantastic videos!

Also how he pronounces "Uisce" as "Uh-s-key" instead of the proper pronounciation "ishka".

Am I the only one sitting sipping a Scotch from a Glen Cairn glass, watching this wishing I could be in the conversation too. I'm answering some question, asking some questions. Can't beat sitting around with some friends and a bottle of Scotch having a good conversation.
