I’m sure someone else already beat me to it but here is a tip for welding powder coated or painted parts. Make sure to remove not only the coating you can see, but also the coating on the back side. If any coating was left between the belly pan and frame it will liquify or off-gas and contaminate the weld from behind. Nice job on the fix and I appreciate the transparency. Keep up the good work!

Being eager to get through a project can cause problems. You did it right by going through your checklist, identifying the problem, correcting it and now your welds look great. It's the attention to detail in the shop by you and Chris that fascinates me. You don't cut corners, want things to function correctly AND look good. When I do a project, I map out everything step by step so I don't forget anything and it makes it easy to remember where I left off so next time I can pick up and work towards finishing without trying to remember where I was a few weeks or months ago. I always love Litebrite videos, and love all of you bringing us this awesome content. 💖

Tip you can use a wedge or a cold chisel at end a L shaped Piece of metal, then as you weld along the brace you drive the wedge at every weld and that close the gape. If it is small gap put a tack on piece and hit it with a hammer before it cools it must be orange or better still yellow. I know this is for old heads but if you master it this is quicker. I hope this helps.

Theres been a hundred times when I try and power through a job to get it done, knowing it's not going very good. And then the next day having to fix what I did. I know that feeling. Welds look great even the repaired ones your doing a perfect job! What I found with a lot of my mig jobs was I would run the voltage a little higher and I would trigger or pulse the button. I would weld for a quick three seconds or less and I would make a circle then pulse the button and and make another circle over and over. It would give really nice beads that looked like a tig welded job. ⚡️

Thanks for another great fabrication/welding video. I'm glad you showed why it's important to at least tack the truss down to the axle before closing up the seams on the truss itself. It may seem easier to finish welding all of the truss off of the axle but you're asking for trouble when it comes time to weld it to the axle. Thanks again!
@captainchippy85592 жыл бұрын
make Sure the o-rings are good on the whip and use spit or oil to lubricate them before reinserting. make sure your polarity is correct too high of gas flow can introduce oxygen into the weld and cause porosity aiming that nozzle in the direction that you're going will also help blanket the weld with proper shielding gas

When what you are welding is spitting at you, (your helmet shield, clothes, etc.), that is the worst. Glad you did not give up, made the weld right… (Extra effort and time). That is good work ethic you are displaying. Thank you for the video. Last arc-welding I did, was on a square hitch receiver over my head… Keep a garden hose with water handy. Getting hit with spatter can be a pain and cause a fire. (Running a lot of welding rod amperage).

It's not about never making a mistake, it's about how you fix your mistakes that counts. nice job. Porosity is from the crud that doesn't burn off(that we miss in prep) in front of the weld puddle, it gets covered up with molten metal then vaporizes and bubbles to the top. I use a combination of grinding wheels from flap, disc, cut off and wire wheel to get crud out of spots without removing base metal. Another trick is to hit the area with a LPG torch to destroy the paint or powder coat then wire wheel it while hot. makes quick work. Big fan of Barnes, I have their trusses front and rear on my TJ build. Keep up the great content, enjoying it immensely.

I believe the porosity was cased by pulling back on the torch tip making the shielding gas not do its job. basically if the tip is to far from the wielding surface or to much tilt plus pulling back. I have welded some dirty metal before and have had no problem. Mig welding is pretty forgiving. You are doing a great job you seem to take criticism and learn from it and not get defensive. I have been following your welding this time next year you will be a machine. Just remember if you don't know something just ask that's how you become the best.

Professional Welder with a question for the young lady -- Did you also weld prep the underside of the Rockzilla kit in the locations that you welded? If not, then your weld penetrations can cook the coating on the opposite side of the weld and draw up into your welds to create porosity. How is this possible? Base on the location you indicated 0:58 you would have to lay down a 2G weld on a radius which can technically make this a flare groove weld. It's a common mistake to not weld prep both sides of a coated part or the parent metal of where it will be located. A little but of dust will not cause porosity because it will be blown away or disintegrated by the arc force of the weld (a welding arc can be as hot as 6000-10000F) with Stick, MIG and Fluxcore. TIG/GTAW is a different story.
