I started lessons over 50 yrs ago with a classical instructor. I lasted one year. The next year I started with a local sax player who also taught "popular" piano. He started me straight away with a 1-5-8-5 arpeg left hand with right hand melody off of lead sheets (which he wrote out by hand). It was absolutely mind blowing to me that I could'seemingly overnite, play a huge popular repertoire. I still use this as my go to approach for a quick start with any lead sheet. With lots of practice/experience you can grow into more sophisticated techniques but this specific technique is the only one that will give a good / acceptable result just about every time. It even works pretty well with jazz if you use your right hand effectively and definitely works well with simple arrangements of classical.

Can you imagine if they took this approach at schools! I spent 4 years at secondary modern here in the UK, we supposedly had music lessons 3 times a week..and in the whole of that 4 years I struck the triangle about 6 times.. that was it. No one was allowed near the piano! I’m now 64 and learning the piano and with your help I’m loving every minute. Thank you for your generosity and utterly wonderful teaching approach.

Hi Kaitlyn. Been sort of "stuck" past several moths due to life events and wanted to try again to learn piano. I am late 60's retired so learning without formal lessons makes it harder. I was learning scales some chord progressions while learn to play my fav songs but never got very far. Then saw your recent video while playing my all time fav "What a Wonderful World". Always liked your teaching style, encouragement and humor. If I could just maybe, learn to play this one song, then maybe will give me the encouragement to continue. Question, where do I find the lead sheet for this song as in your video? Thanks for taking the time. Bruce

For those of you who are just starting out playing the piano like I am, and are old enough to remember a Joni Mitchell song called “River,” the 15851 arpeggio is used throughout the song in the left hand, while the right hand plays just a pair of notes, one and six, of the various chords which would normally be played in the right hand. I recommend you search out River and download the transcription, so that you can see how well this pattern works.

Another great video Kaitlyn. It seems like a lot of times just a simple addition to the left hand takes the song to another level. Where do you think is the best resource to get lead sheets that aren’t overly complicated, but will still sound good? Thanks

Morning beautiful lady, I can't wait until I come back from the dentist, but I can just say I adore lead sheets because they're easy and allows one's creativity express through music. I am a beginer self taught ear player I don't read notes juuust a little, I can't play fast... don't like it to be honest and counting to me means nothing... is inside me... The couning intimidates me catastrofically, again to be honest, so I let the holy spirit take care of that. Is very interesting that you kindly explain what the left hand does in relation to the melody, how and when, what goes with what and when... this type of thing, that's what I was wondering for a long time, just curious I suppose. So there I am anything to inspire me and give me confidence because I always think that I am wrong. My moto is if it souns nice I am ok no need to worry, so I rely on my instinct and my good ears, bless them☺. Thank you👍.
