Great video Saul! Also I'd like to point out again that CONSISTENCY IS KEY. Consistency is what makes an artstyle, each one of those principles Saul mentioned CAN be used, but doesn't have to (like he mentioned with the outlines, you can use them, or you don't have to). Consistency is why the piece at 12:36 works well, the artist "broke a rule" of orphan pixels, but he broke it everywhere, thus creating an interesting style!
@saultoons3 жыл бұрын

This is such a good tutorial. There are way too many tutorials where someone tries to explain the one way they create art while showing bad examples of how NOT to do something and more often than not I even prefer the bad example. This often discourages me, making me believe that my taste is just so bad that I'll never be able to create something others like. You only told us what effects different methods have and how it can be bad if its done unintentionally, while showing examples of how to utilizing it to make incredible art. This is such a positive approach and I love it.
@saultoons3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I try to keep an open mind with techniques. I’ve seen some incredible art which uses what some may consider bad, and I think by understanding the effect these techniques have allows you to use them effectively. You kind of limit yourself to a specific art style if you see something as good or bad, and good and bad is subjective so I don’t think it’s so effective to teach that as that would just be my opinion. Hi! Thanks a lot for taking the time to leave a nice comment, I really appreciate every single person that takes the time to share their experience, it wasn't that long ago that no-one would watch my videos so it's definitely not something I think I'll ever get used to, which is why I try to reply to all of them! I'm glad you found the tutorial useful, I hope your learning goes well :D Thanks Jisoo, feel free to share your work with me anytime on socials, I'd love to see!

Another good tool to use is squinting a bit at what you've created, it always helps me pick out areas that don't fit well or need refining.

Solid tip!

I look use peripheral vision and tilt or shake my head slowly. Careful with squinting too much, it can hurt your eyes during longer sessions.

I would like to add that not only Aseprite is great, but it's also open source, so technically free. You can get a pre-compiled and auto-updatable version by buying it; but you can also do the leg work yourself and compile it from the source code for free, and it's completely legal! The open source version is the same in every aspect, the only difference is it being non-auto updatable

for aseprite you can get it for free but have to compile all the files yourself. there are plenty of tutorials on youtube but always use the most recently uploaded one

Wish i could give you 10 stars :D I have a Question, how do you make different sprites fit together? Like furniture, trees and enemy's...
@saultoons2 жыл бұрын
haha thank you! In regards to your question, it all comes down to style consistency. For different things to appear cohesive they should share similar style attributes, including, but not limited to: value ranges, saturations, and colours palettes, shape language, outline style (if any)... :) I'll probably make a video exclusively on style at some point in the future

This video is the best art fundamental video. Aside from the pixel art, the key fundamentals you pointed out are so concise and accurate. I'm a digital illustrator, stepping into the new world of pixel art and this video is just perfect. Definitely becoming a Patron. Thank you so much Saultoons!
