I recently acquired a Suhr PT100 amp and I'm amazed at the sound and versatility! It was a treat purchase for a big birthday and I researched a lot of high end amps and went with Pete's. Great choice! These Suhr 68's sound incredible but I can say that I am happy that the PT100 is easier and more intuitive to dial in to those fantastic tones! Thanks Pete!

The “Marshall Teeth.” I love that reference to four hole Marshalls. That’s my favorite tone: brown sound really but that bright attack full of high/low mids with a thickness that doesn’t interrupt the mids. Right now I have a reactive load box in an apartment so I can’t get that same fullness of my Marshall SV20H at full blast without the load box. I get a good tone but I have to add the MXR 6-band to get close to the brown sound.

I've always loved your tone and you have a tone signature for sure. Well, to me anyway. Your amps and pedals in the zone put me right into my zone and now I can set different amps and pedals to get the same tone. Huge break through. After all that now I don't need a preamp pedal. I thought I had to have one. Pete, I wish you would talk about the Marshall Super Lead. The new SL Suhr's are something else. I'm looking at the Hombre. I play E, A and classical guitar and they all have pickups. The Suhr Hombre looks very promising for handling all of them.

AWESOME AS ALWAYS, PETE!!! I got a Marshall 100 watt Super lead 1959 with the two 1960s cabinets back in 1977, I think... It had 6550 power tubes, which I just Googled, and had I known, and been able to, if it were possible, probably have switched out to EL 34s! ... Live and learn! At the time, I also did not know about matching tubes, so I got replacements when I needed them from an electronics factory distributor, which I think at the time cost like $10 or $12 a tube!!!-can you imagine???????... aaaaaaahhhhhhh.... The Good Old Days!!!!!!!... You know... Before food cost as much as rent or a new car!!!!!!!... Thanks, again, Joe!!!

Amp sounds amazing. But, what I really noticed was when you plugged in your sig. I remember you saying once that one of your key requirements was to have an even balance across the strings, tone and volume. I really noticed that when you played that open A chord extending the octave. On the sig those high notes really stood out, to me, in comparison to the other guitars.

Great video Pete!!! I've been looking at pre-73 small box 50 watt Plexi amps for years. I've never been able to find a good one for a reasonable price. You can't find a cheap one any more, reasonable priced ones have changed transformers and other issues while the good ones are pretty pricey... if you can even find them. Then you've got the reliability issues if you want to run it hot for extended periods of time... and the worry of how much the value will tank if a transformer goes down. TBH, I'm leaning more and more towards buying a SL67. It just solves a lot of problems and you get a great Plexi. Why Marshall don't do a handwired small box 50 is beyond me!

Hey Pete, I'm looking at buying one of these. I'm torn between the 67 and 68. I don't need extra volume, but I'm just wondering if the 50W sounds as amazing as the 100W. Its nearly 20% cheaper here in Europe and as I said, I don't really need the volume. I just don't want to end up with something that doesn't sound as good. I've got a Marshall YJM100, which has a sort of half power switch that supposedly removes 2 of the EL34s from the amp and makes it 50W. It sounds really muffled and loses all its clarity when you engage it. Its probably just the nature of the circuit of that particular amp, but I just want to be sure as I don't have the opportunity to try either amp before buying.

Pete, does the optimum bright cap value depend on the vol/gain level you plan to play? For instance, if your personal sweet spot was vol on 4, would you reduce the bright cap to get a similar eq curve to the 4700pf cap with vol on 7? Or does it not work that way? Thanks!
@PeteThorn
@PeteThorn 7 ай бұрын
It's a terrific question and ya if you want the amp on 4, for edge of breakup I'd suggest using the 100pf bright. 4 would sound thin with the 4700. On the style amplifier those are the only two values I've heard that I liked. On a JCM 800, it's different because of the topology and I like 1000pf or 4700. So lots of things to think about.

Yeah, the super Bass spec is certainly great for pedals - totally agree with that. The SL amps would work great too, you just have to set it not to gainy! Maybe jumper the channels, volume 1 on 2 or 3 with 100pf bright, volume ii on 4 or 5... killer set like that for your pedals.
