The show peaked at over 8 million viewers on BBC Two at it's peak. Unheard of numbers at the time. At least in the UK it was hugely popular and well known.

One of the best. I went through the entire series for the first time in years recently, and it still holds up for the most part. No doubt that series 3 through 6 was the peak but I enjoy what came after too.

I love this show. I was channel surfing at home late at night, and I happen to fumble the remote and accidentally flip to the local PBS affiliate in the 90s, and landed on Series 3's Marooned a few seconds after the title card, so I did not know what show I was watching until later. "How could you miss a black hole, Holly?!" "Well the thing about space... the color that space *is* , your basic space color... is it's black. And the thing about a black hole, it's main distinguishing feature... is it's black! How're you supposed to see 'em?!" "Yes, but FIVE of them?!" "That's how it goes, innit? 3,000,000 years, not a single one, and now five of 'em!"

Just a comment and like for the algorithm. I watched these at the time and love all of your retrospectives. Star Trek has a lot of shows and movies for material but it was great that you have it the time and love it deserved. I really like Red Dwarf, IK was a little too young to catch the first 2 series so it is 3-6 that I am most fondest of. It was constantly on so I caught them all anyway and still appreciate the first two series. 7 had some good stuff too but it was starting to not feel like Red Dwarf anymore. I love Sci-fi and comedy was in it's heyday during the 80's and 90's. Perfect blend. So many gold standard episodes and platinum moments.

One of the all time greats. Red Dwarf has such a unique charm that is sadly impossible to replicate. Curios about the flat lighting in season 1, odd that they could not imagine doing a sitcom otherwise back them.

Now that I'm catching up on all the Star Trek, I wonder if they didn't borrow from Red Dwarf? I know there was a little here and there in Red Dwarf of Star Trek, but with the timing of the shows, some things reminded me of Red Dwarf in later Star Treks.

I grew up watching RD in Canada on PBS. The cliff hangers, will it come back or is it done was all too real. Especially after 6 and 8. Personally I thought 8 was amazing and it gave me a lot of hope for where the show could be going. Season 8 Rimmer was my favorite.. "Oh it's you the way you used to be" none of the growth, the compassion, the hard trials of afterlife. Who still manages to grow but yet not grow all at the same time. Amazing premise for him. The finish with this Rimmer actually accomplishing the one thing no other Rimmer ever did, he cheat death, HE survived. But how would he get back??? He's broken the mold. Infinite Rimmers lived, died, became ACE, and died in a true arc of redemption, all of them became the best of their kind. Not him. Only we never find out what happened to this Rimmer. How he survived. Season 9 and onward we have our hologram again, and it's great in terms of character, he's not our survivor. The replacement is the 4th individual Rimmer that Dave shares his adventure with. Unless, and correct me if I'm wrong here, Season 9-11 Rimmer is our 1st hologram having given up as Ace and come home. Either way thanks for the supercut. Great trip down memory lane.

Great work! Really well put together. I remember when it first aired and it was like nothing I'd seen before. Despite the rough edges I'm still very fond of the first two series due to fond memories and how much I've seen them. Nice to see you give deserved recognition to what an amazing character Rimmer is. Superbly played by CB. Wasn't as taken with series 7 onwards but 1-6 are classics.

I use the Rimmer salute in Helldivers 2. You can do a spinning salute when you ready up for the drop. Takes some practice to do just 3 rotations flawlessly. Wonderful video, I had no idea what the actords did before Red Dwarf up to now. I started with episode 1 in 2003 when a friend introduced me to it. So long smegheads!

If Red Dwarf was a drama instead of a comedy it could have had potential to be quite disturbing for Lister, being trapped on a truly enormous empty ship with only a hologram, a computer and a strange cat-man for company and not much to do.

I have to ask if you've read the books? If not you might gain an appreciation for those early seasons. I'm an avid reader but I didn't think comedy would work reading it these books changed my mind. I also have the advantage of watching them as they aired waiting for Thursday 9pm and the taping and rewatching it's simply the greatest of all time.

I got more enjoyment and entertainment out of this retrospective than I ever did from Red Dwarf itself. I tried half a dozen times over the years to give it a go and it just never caught my interest. It seemed more like a mockery of science fiction than a genuine one, designed to insult people who liked starships and space travel rather than entertain them. Even framing it as a "sitcom set in space" doesn't really change my perspective on this, because I never really found anything I saw as funny. It felt like something a comedian who hated nerds would come up with, designed to mock and insult actual science fiction fans, like a high school quarterback dressing up in pocket protectors and thick rimmed glasses to entertain his linebacker buddies and impress the cheerleaders. It baffles me how this was so beloved by so many people, especially considering that many of those people aren't high school linebackers cheering on an asshole jock. Farscape did this whole "comedy in space" thing so much better and I never felt disrespected by the show like I did with Red Dwarf. I'm glad people like it, but it's certainly not for me.

I've never seen the Red Dwarf before. Why do some characters have an "H" on their foreheads? and why is one man refereed to as a cat?
@IffyJottere19 минут бұрын
Rimmer has the H on his forehead because he's a holographic projection of his former self, made by the computer so Lister would have a human face to talk to that wasn't on a monitor. Cat is, on the other hand, an evolved descendant of the pregnant stray Lister took in off-camera before the pilot episode. It was against ship regulation, so they put him in suspended animation to dock his pay, for punishment, but then the ship's nuclear reactor breached and the radiation killed everyone except him, and the cat, who scampered into the cargo bay. The computer couldn't safely restore Lister until 3,000,000 years later where his pregnant cat had birthed kittens who inbred for 3,000,000 years, creating a dysfunctional society of humanoid cats. The last one left behind after holy war saw the rest leave the ship, is the one we see here. Also, the cats' holy war was about Lister's dream of opening a hot dog stand -- red caps or blue caps? They both got it wrong - they were going to be green.
@SunnyIntervalsORG12 минут бұрын
The H stands for Hologram, so the character is a computer simulation, not a real human. And the cat is a 'felis sapien' a creature who has evolved over millions of years from the domestic house cat, and now looks very similar to a human.
