After years of searching, I've found an incredible way to play classic games on HD and 4K displays. The NVIDIA Shield TV may not be the newest device on the market, but the emulation community has turned the Shield into one of the best emulator and retro gaming systems you can buy today.
If you'd like to learn more about the Shield TV and setting one up for emulation check out these videos:

I second this, a properly customized hyperspin setup (Not just the default, loud and visually noisy themes everyone uses) will trump any frontend you can find. That's what I'm using on my custom Gam3B0x console. Though, unlike the shield mine is playing everything from PONG to Dead or Alive 6.

I've got a pi3. Got tons of ways to play everything from Atari to PS4 but yeh be cool to try this! Some consoles seem smoother than others you start to notice. On the ps classic for example, everything is hell smooth on it. Its great for pc engine and Sega games etc. Anyway, great vid m8!!!! I've even got a Chromecast I got given to me. Its got this crazy nes/sega emulator on it where u use your tablet or phone as the controller. Pretty cool to checkout everything! Keep up the great vids!

I bought my Shield on day 1 in 2015. So many updates and features since it launched. I stream from my PC, played SNES games, and watch basically everything on it. Now, you can even buy Steam games and use cloud computing to run most AAA games at PS4 Pro/XBox One X level quality using GeForce NOW! Best $200 I've ever spent. 4K support in Netflix, Vudu, Amazon, KZbin, and Google Play. HDR10 support in Netflix. Dolby Atmos support in Vudu for my movies. I wish it supported Dolby Vision. Also, HDR support isn't on KZbin and Google Play movies... which is weird considering those are owned by Google. HDR support in Play and KZbin is currently exclusive to ChromeCast Ultra... Waiting for those to unlock.

So... have you considered FPGA machine like MISTer? It does not emulate a N64 or C64 or anything else. The very nature of FPGA means that it is electronically the same as whatever it is you set for the core. Yet it does it with a really powerful CPU and memory. So no more emulation problems, HDMI output with the ability to run multiple systems along with actual arcade games. REALLY amazing.

@deaflat1119
@deaflat1119 5 жыл бұрын
@Spooksville Scoob That is complete and utter nonsense. Clock speed is just as relevant as it's ever been. Raw clock speed is often not a 1 to 1 comparison between different microprocessors but on a given architecture, a higher clock speed is always faster and a lower clock speed is always slower. The Tegra X1 in both the Shield and Switch are identical except for clock speed. The GPU in the Switch changes from 768MHz in docked mode down to 307MHz in handheld mode (CPU clock doesn't change). Why bother changing clock speed if clock speeds don't matter (I still can't wrap my head around how you could ever think that's true)? The clock reduction is why many games differ in graphic quality (not just resolution) between docked and handheld. Emulators tend to be very CPU limited so the clock speed of the CPU is critical when emulating more recent systems i.e. Dreamcast, GameCube. Switch: 768MHz GPU / 1.02GHz CPU Shield: 1GHz GPU / 1.9GHz CPU

The Shield has the same processor, but because the unit doesn't run mobile and has more room in the shell, it can run at higher clock speeds and not worry about heat build up. The Switch however has it's Resolution is cut to save overhead on the hardware. Now run the Shield TV at 1080p and not at 4k, and you will have a similar comparison. to bad that Android TV OS is a bit heavier and gets in the way compared to the Switch OS. This leads to less amazing games being made for the Shield specifically compared to the switch.The Portability of the switch also makes a bit of a difference in how the hardware operates even when docked. Now when it comes to software available, Nvidia is stuck with android apps and the subsequent legality of emulators and blah blah blah point being that it's mostly casual games. many of which have no originality, are blatant ripoffs of arcade games that still have rights holders (candy crush saga for example) but are legally distinct. They are all either clones, piracy enablers, malware, or just outright simplistic games with very few exceptions that go against that. Now yes I understand that the shield has over features if it isn't running solo. (switch in home streaming, Nvidia's game streaming service, the Nvidia way of in home streaming if you are a total Nvidia fanboy that uses Nvidia graphics cards in their PC, but I am speaking of direct on the device playing. Nintendo's switch is (unmodified mind you.) locked into the games that are available, which tend to be more in line with what the console is capable of doing and not all simplistic garbage mobile games that either don't control well with a controller or are mind numbing. But hey, at least the shield has netflix. Long story short, The two run on similar hardware with one being downclocked to save on heat buildup and battery life. The OS difference is the deciding factor in how these two devices perform and how they are used. If you want Media consumption with mobile games or ports of old games (emulated or otherwise) as well as streaming games at home, go with the Shield, If you want Nintendo and their first party titles and other games that actually take advantage of what the hardware can do, go with the switch.

"Not every game will run perfectly" - This is the main reason why I will continue to use real hardware to play my games. Don't get me wrong, I like and use emulators for their ease of use, but I always seem to run into issues with emulators. Just when I seem to have an emulator sorted out and working amazingly, some game throws a wrench in it. A part of that is I enjoy playing games that are not considered classics. You will not have much problem playing Super Mario Sunshine or Twilight Princess, but you will have issues playing something like 'James Bond 007 - Everything or Nothing', a classic to me, but not for everyone. Nevertheless, the Shield is a great device for this and would probably suit those who just want to play the classics.

That and the switch, Nvidia doesn't really want to compete with Nintendo on this kind of stuff, it's why they haven't made another shield tablet too. They market it as a multimedia device, and it works flawlessly as that, certainly better than the fire TV and apple TV, but it also comes with some native support for some console games, the ability to stream games from a PC with an Nvidia GPU and as of now, the ability to use GeForce now for free, with a couple of games you can play on the platform for free, as well as any PC games you may have on separate accounts like steam or GOG. It can do a lot and is a very underrated device indeed

That means I can simply stream my entire Launchbox emulation setup running on my high powered PC right to my Shield, utiliing a full on frontend experience. Also, it doesn't use up any of the shield's storage space. -Enjoy ;-)

I know your heart is in the right place here and you’re not approaching this as irresponsibly as other YT channels but this is the kind of content that contributed to the Ouya’s unfortunately brief painful lifecycle...right out of the gate all anyone would talk about was emulation - sometbing you can do on damn near anything. The shield is unique because it’s so much more than just THEE android tv but also classic emulation is about the least cool thing it does.

Unfortunately PS2 and Wii U emulation have a little ways to go before they're ready for Android devices like the shield. Here's to hoping that changes!

Nvidia shield TV is great and I still want one. But you can get a Alienware steam machine with a i5 or i7 500 or 1tb that came out in 2015 for about the same price as a Nvidia shield TV and you can play emulators up to Wii u and 3ds flawlessly. And launch up lauchbox so it will boot to that right when you turn it on and now you can have the ultimate emulation machine.

Patchy on Gamecube and Wii emulation, Super Mario sunshine was shown and yes it runs...but not without some pretty obvious slowdown. The shields great for any generation below that though

Exactly. I have been trying for a good 2 months to get Gamecube and Wii to run the way these KZbinrs do and it is so frustrating.

I have the shield too! and it's awesome, does anyone know how to get the layout of the homescreen like the one in this video? for example all the mupen64 games, dolphin games etc all in a list? Thank you and great video.

I wish I were more tech savvy. There are a lot of childhood games I want to own/play. Mainly NES, SNES, Gamecube, and maybe N64. I dont want to spend the money if I cant figure out how to use it and I dont really have any friends that could help me with it.

Happy Chick for the Shield is a FREE all in one emulator, where you can search for roms and the program automatically runs the correct emulator when you start up the game. Clutch!

Happy Chick is garbage and is borderline Chinese spyware. It also lacks a lot of configuration options. There are far better ways to emulate on the Android platform.

@@2ramzyx Try sourcing ROM backups and using a frontend like RetroArch or Retro X. Even the .EMU series emulators on the Play Store are better. HappyChick is objectively terrible. The emulation is bad, the performance is bad, the UI is bad, and the meta data for ROMs is often incorrect. Those who use HappyChick have never had a good quality emulation experience. You are missing out.
