Awesome to see the look at emulation on here, this is beyond impressive! I actually owned one of the original Shield TV models but bought it for the opposite reason you did, mainly wanted to have a 4K media playback and streaming box with a side of emulation. Unfortunately my experience was tainted because I ran into constant issues with any type of media consumption, as well as general usage of the Shield TV itself. Issues such as apps randomly breaking for months on end (despite updates and factory resets), both the remotes I had breaking as well, and I believe my patience was finally lost after finding there was no way to disable the Bluetooth broadcasting on later updates. Doesn't sound too bad, but living in an apartment and having your video playback consistently be interrupted by people trying to connect to the Shield TV was beyond frustrating. I still never got around to messing with emulation on it, by the time I was done dealing with media playback on it I didn't want to look at the thing, haha. Sold it earlier this year.

i was an early adopter of the Shield back when the portable first released, something about having the most powerful android device at that time was very appealing even with its awkward clamshell controller design but i wore that sucker out! i unfortunately missed out on the tablet and by the time they updated to the K1 it was so darn rare i couldnt find one with a decent price, still can't then the TV came along and i waited it out, eventually waiting what i felt was too long for it to even be relevant anymore but then the redesign came and sported the exact same specs and it was still killing it! so i caved and got it when it was still 199 last fall and i have had nothing but enjoyment. my smart TV doesnt even get used for its native apps and like you said the thing is a emulation powerhouse alongside being a streambox, it is essentially the greatest gaming hardware ever created in terms of absolute generational versatility, i absolutely love running NeoGeo and TurboGrafx on it among dreamcast and gamecube. i sure wish someone could develop a version of pcsx2 for it but that has yet to come to fruition thus far

Love my Shield. I've had it for about two years now and it's one of the best and most useful pieces of gear I've ever used. Emulation works great on it of course, and I can also play my PC games at full speed and highest settings, streamed from my desktop PC into the living room. It's awesome!
@StompySan
@StompySan 5 жыл бұрын
Couple things that I feel are important to this system. First, the expandable storage is important, but network storage options are completely glanced over. The Shield has SAMBA support out of the box, so you can attach a network share, and bind it as expansion storage. What I did is attached my NAS, and then pointed the emulators all to the network shares, since it is seen as a standard folder to apps. Also, I feel your Dolphin performance was not where it should have been. It looked like AA was turned down, and there was some hitching in games that I do not experience it in. Are you running with Vulkan? The performance gains using Vulkan, especially on Android, are huge in comparison to OpenGL, and the Shield can handle it very well.

I have the Nvidia Shield Tablet and it's my go-to for emulation with RetroArch. I love having it propped up next to me on my desk without having to tie up my PC. Plus, I can connect to my TV with HDMI if I want to play on a TV. I also highly recommend the Shield controller revision. It's super comfortable, the d-pad is precise and the battery life is great. You never power it off. You press a button and it instantly wakes back up. Impressive stuff.

One can only hope its easier to setup say than Retropie on the Raspberry Pi, easier when someone has done all the hard work but going at Retropie in cold blood was a mind bending challenge I found. I find my Retropie doesn't handle N64 or DC games well into a 4K environment, Goldeneye is a damned tear and stretch lag nightmare and SM64 a laggy choppy yukfest, runs perfectly on my PC and Proj64 and using a footprint the Raspberry Pi should be dancing around but doesn't...

I got mine about a year ago and haven't regretted it at all. Same size as the Switch but can play tons and tons of consoles. Absolutely worth it, even at the higher price point I'd say. And keep in mind, the Shield has a ton of fantastic Android games as well, and some games exclusive on Android for just the Shield like Half-Life 2 (and both episodes), Metal Gear Rising, Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3, Doom 3 BFG Edition (runs at 1080p 60fps), Borderlands 2 and the Pre-Sequel, Tomb Raider 2013, and more.

Great vid and I've had a blast playing with RetroArch and my SHIELD TV. I've been a SHIELD user since 2013 (Tablet) and 2015 (TV Pro) and yes I have a 2017 model now :-) I knew I wanted it for the excellent PC streaming support but have been pleasantly surprised with what the community has gotten out of this hardware. Q for anyone who may have knowledge: I have one config issue I haven't been able to solve which is using a keyboard for platforms that need it (C64, Amiga, 2nd gen consoles with the keypads (I'm looking at you, Atari 5200 Star Raiders). I've tried several devices without luck- the best I can do is map keys to joypad buttons, but I can't seem to map keys as themselves or just use pass-through. From what I've read I've gathered that the best keyboard support is with the X driver which of course isn't available for the Android build. I've been unable to get virtual keyboards to work either, some cores will show the keyboard but no mapping allows key select. I have found a Libretro bug which seems to indicate that the issue may still be unresolved but it appears to have gone dark. github.com/libretro/RetroArch/issues/2128 If anyone knows of another place that would be a good forum for this question that would be helpful too! Thanks again MVG and keep up the great (and fun) work!

No they wouldn't the sheild TV is twice as fast. Theoretically the switch could be brought up to the same speed because the GPU is the same but that doesn't account for differences in thermal design. The switch is more compact and probably much poorer at dissipating heat

@@joshualabonte8478 The Shield doesn't run at its maximum frequencies all the time. There are tests out there that show it actually thermal-throttles to similar frequencies of the Switch, and the technical documentation of the chip and of the Jetson modules states as much. (Backtrack on this thread on the late NeoGAF forum: www.neogaf.com/threads/nintendo-switch-dev-kit-stats-leaked-cortex-a57-4gb-ram-32gb-storage-multi-touch.1297191/page-180#post-228014696 to see the whole thing) Of course, the Shield TV can indeed run the CPU at higher frequencies at the cost of massively throttling the GPU, which would be good for emulation, however the Switch could probably add a mode that did a similar thing. We generally don't know what frequencies the Shield TV runs at unless they are measured from the kernel, so anything goes. For all we know, emulators like the official Wii emulator for Chinese releases might be running at Switch-like frequencies, since developers CAN set CPU frequency.

@@MrReddragongamingHD And that's still nearly $100AUD more than it should be. This is the thin end of the wedge. Look at things like PSVR pricing. We're only now getting close to the original USA launch price and we still get LESS in the bundle. It costs the same to MAKE. The price isn't based on production costs + a fair margin. It's purely "perceived value" within any given market, all geared to make us all stretch the money we earn.

@@MrReddragongamingHD Don't worry dude it wasn't an attack on your comment. It was an attack on "the system" of pricing. I am using retroarch core pcsx rearmed and it is the closest you can get to an actual PlayStation. Every other emulator had issues with upscaling and artifacts. Not on this one, and it runs so smooth. Then you add the wonderful rewind and fast-forward utility from retroarch and it's just gaming heaven. Don't forget to set up a button for "enable hotkeys" so you can still bind all your keys for the PS but also have your utility keys for the emulators.

This and the Pie are 2 very different products. The pie can be what you need it to be, and is more of a development board. Need to run Kodi? A SQL server? A security camera DVR? Control a robot? Pie can do all that... The shield is purely a media center + console wannabe. It is easy to use, is small, quiet (fan less), is compatible with most current video technologies (4k, hdr etc), has an integrated Chromecast, can be controlled through Google Home/Assistant. It looks a lot nicer in a living room compared to a full PC with its keyboard and mouse. I bought one 3 years ago, and I absolutely love it. I also have a gaming PC, just not in my living room .
