In this series, I assemble what I believe is the greatest team possible for each franchise. In this specific video, we're looking at the San Antonio Spurs.
5 starters, 5 backups, and 3 rotations players. A total of 13 roster spots on each Ultimate Team. It's not just about talent, but it's about building a team that works and gels together.

Great team. It is crazy to think that a 37 year old Dominuque Wilkins played on that 96-97 Spurs team with no Robinson or Elliot, literally nobody else an offensive threat, and still averaged 18 a game. That's how good he was.

This team is stacked, the fact that Bruce Bowen, Derozan, and Aldridge are reserves just proves it. I saw that Bruce is Draymond Green and that’s not an insult to Draymond. Bruce was a far better shooter and his perimeter defense is all time great. He wasn’t as big as Draymond but in this modern era of wing 4s he could cover 1-4 while hitting 40% from 3pt range.
@lesbo37

Bowen was great but Draymond's point skills made him a much better overall player than Bowen. He was pivotal to being able to play without a genuine PG so that Curry and Thompson could do what they did (and Durant). Bowen was about as good as the 3 and D roleplayer gets though but prime Draymond finished a deserved 7th in the MVP, Bowen wasn't that level.

Jonny, there's an important topic you should talk about: the 2003 Spurs run. People mention 2011, 1994, 1983 and even 1967, but people act like the Lakers dynasty ended with the 2004 finals fiasco (which it's kinda disrespectful to the Pistons, they outplayed the dysfunctional Lakers). But, people dont get enough credit to the Spurs for ending the dynasty and beating the Lakers the year Kobe and Shaq were head to head as the main player on their team. Even thought the Lakers didnt have enough talent like previous years, the Spurs were not much better either than the Nets that year.
@itsjustjohnnydanger

@@itsjustjohnnydanger Exactly. Casual fans are delusional with that Lakers duo and superstars overall. Teams wins championships, not only the players. They were beaten by the Spurs first, and then the Pistons outplayed them easily the next season. People act like the only lost because of Shaq and Kobe's feud, but the Spurs and the Pistons should received their flowers for beating that Goliath, not act like they lost just because of their lack of chemistry.

@@p00lboy Warriors and Lakers are a clear tier above the others in the west. Curry/Richmond/Barry/Durant/Prime Wilt with Hardaway/Thompson/Arizin/Green/Thurmond and Mullin/Johnston/+1 is elite. That bench is on the level of a few of the teams posted and the starting 5 legit competes with the Lakers and might actually be better on 4 of the 5 positions. Barry vs Baylor and Curry vs Magic are genuine discussions, especially for one year peaks, and Durant and Wilt are definitely better than Kareem and Davis on one year peak (this is prime Wilt while peak Kareem was Bucks). Kobe/West smashes the SG options though. OKC and Rockets are really good but just not that level. Rockets only have past his prime Drexler over Richmond/Thompson as a possible win in the starting 5, depth isn't particularly close. OKC you could make a good case for Durant and Allen over Barry and Richmond and there's at least a case, albeit I wouldn't try it, for Payton vs Curry but the other two spots aren't really a debate and, again, the depth isn't close. Spurs similarly are in this tier.

Guys that are worth considering more highly: Big Shot Rob (second unit). Dude was clutch. Every broadcast, the commentators liked to talk up his "intangibles", but let's be real, you don't win 7 rings on luck alone. Guy created his own luck, and worked hard to repeatedly put himself in that position. Danny Green (rotation?). People often forget that had the Spurs won Game 6 in 2013 (up 5 with ~30 seconds left), that Danny Green might have had a Finals MVP (more likely Kawhi would have gotten one then, but Duncan and Parker both had Finals MVPs prior, and with the Spurs playing unselfish basketball, there's both some beauty and justice in their Finals MVPs being spread out). Steve Kerr (definitely rotation). Guy was an all time shooter who knew his role. Boris Diaw (honorable mention). In the "metagame" of basketball where things can get predictable, Diaw was a creative genius (similar to, but not necessarily on the same level as Ginobli/Jason Williams) helping to keep opponents from being able to predict what's going to happen. Guys I like from your list, but that maybe should be a bit lower: Aldridge. I liked him during his time in San Antonio. Unfortunately the standard here, though, is winning in the playoffs, and Aldridge didn't quite get that done enough (which isn't quite fair to him, considering that as the height of the Warriors dynasty). All that said, not sure what you'd be looking to get out of him as your 4th big, other than simply having a 4th big. Like, if you're actually pitting all time teams against each other, and the concern is having enough big guys to foul Shaq... then I think you want Artis Gilmore because he'd actually play D on Shaq. Derozen. I love how he can play, but he's also more of an isolation threat. Team identity here should be some combination of 2014 Beatiful game on offense, twin towers smothering defense. I don't think Demar's skills necessarily fit that bill

You said Manu at point and I said wtf... and then you put Dog at the 2 and I'm ok with Manu being the 1 lol. I have Kenon as my #2 PF. Otherwise this is a pretty easy team to build. The frontcourt is intimidating. Duncan, Robinson, and Leonard are excellent defenders (and superb scorers) and it would be tough to score on them or stop them, let alone rebound over them. Parker and Iceman would be a high octane backcourt too. I was originally surprised to see Manu at the 1 but you have a great case for that, especially the Harden comparison. I like the Robertson and Manu backcourt, esp given the height advantage Manu would have over most PGs, the defense of Robertson, and their scoring. I remember the Memorial Day shot by Elliot and like how he and Manu would bring spacing and great 3 point shooting. Rodman and Wemby would also be a tough frontcourt to score on and rebound against. And the latter would make up for the former's lack of scoring. Awesome rotation players. They have a good mix of shootong (DeRozan and Bowen), defense (Bowen and Alridge), and rebounding (Alrdige). I agree - I admire how they are great at the fundamentals and are so balanced. Probably the most well balanced team so far. Awesome video! Happy Sunday, Jonny!

Spurs are probably in the top 5 or 6 franchises period for all time teams, let alone top 4 in the West. The main guy I was missing, though, was Boris Diaw. He was a very underrated role player for them. His versatility is probably more important than Aldridge is in a frontcourt that already has Duncan, Robinson, and Wemby. Robert Horry was in your mentions, but he was one of the most clutch shooters ever. I also would have added him somewhere. I guess cut DeRozan for fit reasons. In general, I tend to think you build all these teams with less 3 point shooting than you should in favor of talent. I'm old school, so I appreciate old school style team builds. But I cannot deny the spacing of the modern game is a huge boon for offenses. With the top line bigs the Spurs have, it just makes sense to me to not clog the paint as much as is reasonable.

AND in limited minutes. Wemby's a freak, dude. Imagine his abilities 7 years from now, and imagine if he had teammates who actually fed him. As hyped as he is, I feel like some people STILL don't see how high his ceiling can be, which is crazy.

Once you are done setting the teams, can we get your predictions on who you think would have success and who'd win? Then right after, we can see the 2k Sim, which btw there's a youtuber named Med who makes insane 2k Sim videos that are like movies. Would be cool to see you guys collab for this ultimate series, or do a style of video like that

I think James Silas is one of those '70s players who is unjustly overlooked. He spent 11 years with the Spurs, nine of them quite productive, and had a really good shooting percentage for a 6-1 guard.

This starting lineup is insanely insanely good. One of the best in the series and the fact there is no defensive weakness is absolute killer

This Spurs team is awesome. Top 4 in the West for sure. I guessed 8 of the players and pretty much agree with the others.

I love this team. They have so many incredible strengths that can easily turn a game into their favor, but we all knew this team would have a defense that makes the 1985 Chicago Bears look simple in comparison. But the thing that stands out to me the most is how many unicorn like players this team has. You want a two-way forward with bear-like hands? Here's Kawhi Leonard. You want a historic scorer? Here's the Iceman. You want Hall of Fame level big men that arrange from being so impactful to a franchise that it still feels like he underachieved from a talent perspective, a Navy veteran with unbelieveable skills on both sides of the floor consistently, and another guy that might be even freakier than that? Here's Tim Duncan, David Robinson, and Victor Wembanyama. You want historic perimeter defense that can possibly rival MJ? Well then, it's time for Jonny to pay homage to a man that would easily be in the Basketball HOF and get more recognition if not for a horrible sexual child assault scandal THAT NEVER EVEN HAPPENED in Alvin Robertson. Don't get me wrong, he's not completely clean, but he really got screwed over there. Look it up. But there's not enough pure scorers, you say. Ok. Here's DeRozan and LA for you. I want to say this team would be an easy 3rd round appearance. I really do. But sadly, there's just better. This may be the most well-rounded team, but sometimes a team can be so good at one area that it overpowers through. The Rockets have a historic offense (yes, defense wins championships, but unstoppable forces beat immovable objects). The Warriors have historic floor spacing. And the Lakers...I think we all know the answer to that. I predict San Antonio goes out in the 2nd round to the Lakers or the Warriors, but that's largely due to the talent in their conference. If they were in the East, things may be a little different. But hey, those are just my thoughts on my secondary team. See you for the Suns.

random idea for u but what if u did like a retrospective on a certain season like 1991 for example and go through big moments by the month to all star weekend to playoffs to finals etc. that would be nice from ur perspective especially if u watched those years live

Johnny Moore, if he hadn't contracted Spinal Meningitis I truly believe Jr. which was his Nickname would have had a Great Career as he and Alvin Robertson were called the Twin Terrors by Sports Illustrated because of how they were 2 Of the best in the NBA in Steals and he led the League in Assist in 1 Season as he and Mike Mitchell were 2 Of my Favorite players on the Spurs ever

Starting five is perfect and perfectly Spurs. With Manu off the bench and a great defence, they seem like the most balanced team so far and it's no surprise. When you say Parker wasn't explosive, I have to disagree: he wasn't vertically explosive, could barely dunk, but was horizontally explosive, fastest player in the NBA with the ball in the hand for some time.

hey jonny i just wanted to give you a video idea, but im pretty sure you already have one in mind surrounding this topic so theres this new trend on tiktok where people have been downplaying former greats in the 90s and 80s. Many new gen basketball fans have been going around social media saying "We done with the 90s/80s" and overall downplaying the era and calling it weak. I want to hear what your thoughts are on this?

Life long Spurs fan: personally I'd have Avery Johnson and LMA as the backup PG and PF, move Robertson to the first reserve spot and It's a real tossup between Rodman and DeRozan for the last reserve spot. Love the list though especially including Wemby in it already. Dude is unreal 🤯 I'd give us the edge against any team in the west except LA

I think it would be better if there's no duplicate players in every team. Only one team for each player. Parker Gervin Kawhi Duncan Robinson Manu Robertson Elliot Bowen Wemby James Silas Avery Johnson Danny Green REMOVE: Rodman (Bulls) DeRozan (Raptors) Aldridge (Blazers)
