I appreciate what you doing, but I think this design is more expensive than necessary and also a little awkward. Rather than two 5 gallon buckets, try one 2 gallon bucket inverted inside of a 5 gallon. Drill a hole in the side of the 5 gallon bucket for overflow, keep the two pvc supports, replace the u bolts with zip ties . Add potting soil. Skip the awkward piece of pvc shoved down the side altogether. Much cheaper, about the same reservoir, less soil. For a huge reservoir, add a lid to the 5 gallon bucket and use the towels as wicks/mat to draw water up from the bucket to the lid. Use a 3 gallon bucket, drill holes in the bottom, fill with potting mix, set on the wicking mat/towel. Keep the pvc supports, dill holes in the lid to accommodate them , affix them to the 3 gallon pot with zip ties If you want more room for soil, use a 5 gallon pot for both the water and the soil. It will cost a little more but you will have a much larger reservoir. This last design is what I am using overwinter my peppers. I add a third 5 gallon bucket, inverted on top, to protect them from mice, preserve humidity, and keep light level low.

I found that if you put you drill in reverse and short burst of speed the bucket drills really nice

In the bottom use mosquito bits tied in a dollar tree nylon . you can flatten it along the bottom . I'm using this idea this summer ! Thanks.

This may be a dumb question. What is the purpose of the short pvc wegded between the two buckets? You can add water from the T joint .

Thanks for your question. The wedged PVC keeps the bucket elevated and allows more water to sit in the lower bucket....have a good one.

You can use two to four bolts and nuts to elevate the top bucket ( or two wires crossing each other etc). The wedged PVC is unsightly.

Neat design, I'm going to use it for cucumbers. Thank you. I have one question: the space for water to wick up into soil is rather shallow, is there need to replenish the water frequently?

Depending on the time of year and the amount of sun the bucket gets i would say to invest in a probe style meter. It will give you and exact idea of moisture.
