Little-known fact about 2000AD: When Pat Mills conceived the idea for the magazine, he wanted it to have less in common with superhero comics like in America and more in common with the French comic magazine Metal Hurlant, which would inspire Heavy Metal Magazine (which some 2000AD strips like Judge Dredd, Rogue Trooper and Slaine would feature in both iterations). Shakara I feel comes the closest to replicating the raw feeling of those magazines with the art, the story, and the general aesthetic of it. It's really compelling me as a guy who loves the hell out of Heavy Metal to read this.

I'm surprised anyone else outside the creative team even remembers Shakara! I got 2000AD on and off over the late 00's - early teens, so I haven't read the whole story, but what I remember of it is "Weird aliens make complex, intricate evil plans, then Shakara shows up and kills them all while shouting his own name... only it's way more fun than that sounds". It also shows that an unstoppable, near-invincible hero can be entertaining if done well... and his welcome isn't outstayed!

@pixillest34682 жыл бұрын
@@GRPNW You mean how would you compare Girls Last Tour to Devilman Crybaby? They couldn't be any more different. Devilman is all bombast and gratuity, it's arguably not even depressing til the ending, its mostly high octane excess (I mean this only as a compliment, Crybaby was pretty rad). The only thing the two have in common is that both are anime and both have depressing moments, but where Crybaby saves that for a cathartic ending. Girls Last Tour is sleepily existing in it. Girls Last Tour is very slow paced, very somber, very "cozy". There's no action, it is surprisingly light hearted most of the time, its just the setting that slowly makes you a little sad. You are watching two of the last humans on the planet aimlessly wander the expansive gluttony of previous human civilization. There's not much of a plot, it's mostly about the world they inhabit and the creeping sadness that this is the end of everything, and all that matters is what you choose to do with the time that is left to you. Tonally and pacing wise it feels similar to something like Mushi-Shi, where worldbuilding (or worldbreaking in this case) takes center stage and the characters are more a vehicle for that.

For some reason, they decided to give the Shakarans absolute cake near the half-way point of the comic. You can even see it briefly at around 9:25 in the video (the bottom most center panel). It's really distracting because at one moment I'm watching an epic fight and the next moment it just teleports into my hand. @@BewareCast I’ve read it as well! I recommend finishing it. It’s actually similar to Girls’ Last Tour with the whole “Ruined City” aesthetic. And since I’ve been mentally comparing them recently here’s a spoiler-free mini analysis: Girls’ Last Tour (GLT) is a whole lot less violent than Blame, but (in my opinion) it’s moments hit harder. Blame has a concrete world (with cloning, horrifying drones(?), and cyborgs) but GLT’s more “metaphorical” world fits its themes way better. Honestly, even though they are similar on a surface level, they are both very different. And even though I personally prefer GLT, Blame is still good. My favorite Blame moment is Toua Heavy Industries Ark, it’s AI is very interesting. But, in my opinion, AI in GLT has a lot more impact, perhaps for the same reason that the Darkness Devil from Chainsaw Man had its impact: It arrived, did its thing, and left at the exact moment where you could only understand what you need to know.

It certainly looks interesting. I too haven't read comics in a long time so I might actually check this one out.

Shakara looks like as if it was inspired by Japanese manga? Like something out of chainsaw man, really cool design

Or Dorohedoro. Shakara reminded me of a lanky Kaiman

@@omnipenne9101 definitely has its dark and bizarre sci fi/ dark ink look in common

Have to see about looking more into it but for now I think it'll be worthy of adding to a list of universes as not one but various planet killers popping up with a focus on the aliens and just, think my mind put it, "like the No More Heroes video game plot but with bad alien civilizations". Just one person rising through the carnage of a mad world. Cool stuff.

When I read the title I thought, no way anything can compete with Warhammer 40K. But if your first move is to kill off humanity’s last hope, that’s pretty badass.
