Making lock-on an actual projectile that interacts with your enemies is genuinely brilliant game design.

Richard Toppler It's amazing isn't it? Platinum take long established concepts and spin them into something even more useful and interesting.
@farslashenjoyer10 жыл бұрын
***** It really is! Beyond just more useful and interesting (although I do agree that those are true) it's also just a more organic way of communicating to the player what's happening and allowing them to interact with the world even further. It justifies a necessary mechanic that hasn't ever really been justified before! I wasn't kidding when I said it was brilliant... just genius.

10:46 this is why Bayo is so intimidating. Whilst attempting an extended wicked weave combo he had to dodge the lightning fast lunge, offsetting into the final weave attack which was deflected and within a split second he had to parry the fireball counterattack which he caught at the last possible moment. All this happened in under FOUR SECONDS

7 years later and you’re still helping people in case you didn’t know :) I’ve casually played the first game for a while but never beat it until a couple days ago and now I’m about halfway through the second game and just from my experience beating the first one I’m doing so much better in the sequel especially with dodge offset but videos like these always end up adding something new to my style of play or impart knowledge that is super useful to know while playing so thank you a ton!! Edit: Also can’t wait for Bayo 3 to come out in just a couple more months!!!

This is the kind of content that we need in the community, this is exactly the upper hand that the fighting game community has over the character action/spectacle fighter genre. You were the one working on the Future Press Official Guide, right? That guide is an urban legend since it's so hard to get. I wish you could continue this series, got excited when I heard you on yoshesque's "Current State of the Action Genre" video. I wish you could continue on with this series, but I have only respect for what you've done in this community (kudos to ChaserTech, Broly2012/D3taylz Gaming, Yoshesque, Donguri and Ha0 Kwan De Jean as well!).

Thank you so much for your feedback, I really appreciate it. I'm really struggling to stay motivated as the gaming audience of today do not support mechanically deep action games. We get see so few of these games released these days, and the few we do see struggle to find any sort of audience. What happened with Transformers Devastation was absolutely disgusting. That game is a direct evolution of the mechanics PlatinumGames are famous for, yet nobody wants to know. Even when the game was being distributed for free they still wouldn't give it a chance. I put a huge amount of work into my content and I want to help build a knowledge base equivalent to that which holds the FGC together, but without audience support for the games it's not commercially viable for studios to release them and everything I've been doing has been utterly pointless. It's upsetting the way huge chunks of gaming audience today dedicate SO much energy to trivial matters and vacuous, mechanically dead games, yet absolutely will not support the handful of games we see which push the art of game design in new and exciting directions.

Well Saurian, we're a niche. We're the niche that grew with Japanese gaming, arcade games, low skill floors and infinitely high skill ceilings, tough as balls games, we grew from arcade to 8-bit up until we reached this point. Yes, we're that generation of gamers that would develop a game's mechanics and gameplay foremost before even thinking about "the story experience" and whatnot. 10 years ago we were not a niche, we were what most people would simply call "gamers" and that's it, but that point is past it and there's NOTHING WRONG about that. Your efforts are not overlooked by the few of us that still follow the genre. We only have PlatinumGames continuing on the trend of this genre and the fact we're so niche makes it a nightmare for companies to finally put the foot on the pedal and just say "GO". That's why it had to be SEGA that helped Platinum become what it is right now, they came from the Arcade/Japanese Market attitude towards gaming and so they greenlighted everything Platinum wanted to do. I firmly believe things are changing for the better in that regard. With PC gaming taking a stride on consoles and Japanese development studios finally opening up to the possibilities of PC gaming these games are having an easier way finding their audience and becoming profitable. I do understand your sentiment towards Transformers, and I believe that happened due to mismanagement of information in the marketing area. Activision doesn't care at all about the depth of the game and the kind of niche it attracts, they wanted a piece of merchandising. That's why they pride themselves more on the original VA cast returning than the depth of the game, but that's not PlatinumGames' fault more so than it is Activision's (and so on with their licensed deals that Platinum has to take to be able to survive). In this situation, it is precisely content creators such as yourself that elevate the game to what it can be. What you and other channels do is not entirely different to what most of us in this niche did almost 30 years ago on the arcades. You play spectacularly and then you explain how you did it and how it works. Its the arcade community, translated to the 21st century. Mastering these games is hard, it takes dedication and so it cannot be expected from the "masses" (although i hate that word because it makes the argument sound super snobby) that only play games as they watch movies. I can assure you there's a community where many of us thank people like you for saving us 200 hours of gameplay to be able to play well. Devil May Cry 3 had a similar reception and community behind it as these games do now and that generation of gamers is more or less the ones that still create content for the games that "received the torch". I believe we can do a difference and that if we organize as a community we can really do something different that will generate impact. Just like the arcades 25 years ago with Street Fighter 2, if we organize monthly/bi-weekly style tournaments, if we create "top 10" user submitted content in categories such as "top 10 comebacks" and "top 10 Kulshedra fights" every week we can REALLY make a difference. More people will want to learn, and in that way the grouop can grow. I've been a fan of the latest Souls' series since they came out and I've seen their growth from day one. I believe we can do much of the same, after all the hype, depth and lore was all done by the community around it. In turn, the games have become commercial hits and have spouted many copycats which find themselves commercially feasible. I cannot ask you to do something you don't like simply because you're one of the few ones who CAN. I can't tell you action games will become what WE want them to become. I can't convince you that the community will be better, no, but I can assure you the community is better with people such as you than without it. What you do is NOT pointless, curiously enough we're a niche that's not TOO vocal because we spend more time actually playing the game than showboating other people, but be assured that your content is appreciated. I have many ideas for what we can do as a community, it'd be interesting to plan for something as a community with different venues. I know you probably feel a bit down due to the amount of work that goes into your content and the amount of people who actually appreciate it, but I find it a necessity for our community. P.S.: I could never actually read all what you did for the FuturePress guide, I wish I could have or I wish I could access that some way or another without having to pay 400 USD; but that led me to your channel so long ago (I'm still trying to learn the ropes of Bayonetta though, I still love me some Platinum, DMC3&4, NG:B&2 and whatever comes that might satisfy the itch). I hope you find enjoyment again in doing these sometime in the future. I speak for the whole disjointed community when I say this is valued. Sorry for the long post, I just really wanted to say this (and actually would love to have a conversation regarding the building of a community sometime). Thank you for your hard work and hours of dedication in both exploration of the gameplay mechanics and content creation.

I'm curious how exactly you would intend for other players to contribute to this series. I've got my own Bayonetta: Explained "series" (well, just two videos) with maybe two more videos planned but they don't really cover anything as deep as what you've got here.
@Saur10 жыл бұрын
I would urge other players to join together and share their findings, just as we have done here. If you have any strategies, tips, tricks or even thought processes you would like to share with the community, then feel free to get in contact and use this series as a platform to put those ideas out. For example; a player may not have a microphone and video capture setup, but may be sitting on some amazing strategies. If that player were to contact me, then I could replicate those strategies and write a script based on them. It's about sharing ideas to enrich the community surrounding these games, just as we used to in the arcades. Likewise, if you already have a capture setup and would like to have your own videos featured, then feel free to get in contact if you would like me to include them.

@Saur10 жыл бұрын
Yeah... I don't understand the changes they have made to Bayonetta 2 yet, to be honest I'm struggling to find the reasoning behind most of them. Don't get me wrong, it's a great game, but I feel that Platinum didn't have to change their design philosophy in order to appeal to their audience. But I absolutely do not blame them for making these changes, look what happened with The Wonderful 101, look at Korra. Both of these games are sold on the strength of the design of their mechanics, and the gaming press were foaming at the mouth as a result. I don't believe changing the games is the answer though, I believe changing the way these games are promoted is the answer, we need to take the gaming "press" out of the equation and this is the reason why I am trying my best to pass on knowledge to the community.
@kevvymetal472710 жыл бұрын
Certainly yes! That idea would be ideal! I've gotten a bit more used to the game with Bayo 1 controls using the Wii Classic Controller Pro (red one that came with Xenoblade) It's a lot easier like this but I really miss the Alt Dodge. Such an odd change.
@expcake10 жыл бұрын
***** Honestly, I think that the Lock+Jump dodge was just overlooked because it was never really mentioned in Bayonetta 1, so not a lot of people knew about it, and the devs probably just forgot about it. But then again, they remembered Kisslocks for 2, so we can't be fully sure.

@mbvtemjin497010 жыл бұрын
One thing you should really make note of about Bayonetta's basic shooting is that unlike Dante with Ebony and Ivory, she cannot hit a target directly below her, but will only fire so far downwards at an angle. It's a really simple caveat, but it makes controlling an enemy below Bayonetta slightly more difficult for someone making the transition between the two series.
@Saur10 жыл бұрын
Noted, will keep that in mind. Also OMG a Temjin avatar! In a parallel universe that's MY roboto-chan!

Judging by your taste in games, I'd be surprised if you weren't already aware of it and all over it, but I'm just putting it out there since I'm in the middle of transitioning from working with that to this.
@Saur10 жыл бұрын
MBV Temjin It's my pleasure, and yes I have seen the Style Switching mod for DMC3. The problem I have is that I have a very demanding job, I want to play all of this stuff but I simply never have the time. If I could do this for a living you would see me play EVERYTHING! :D
@mbvtemjin497010 жыл бұрын
***** Awesome, unfortunate about the job. :( Regarding Bayonetta, though, it's worth mentioning as well that the last third of the game (two thirds, really) nearly requires the Moon of Mahaa-Kalaa and Bat Within, but once you have it, it makes the fights borderline trivial. It's far easier to counter the final boss than it is to dodge most of their attacks (spoilers, I guess?)

@laziestoldman10 жыл бұрын
Great guide! Easy to follow even for new or casual players (at least for now). Question: are you checking whether all the mechanics still apply for Bayo 2?
@Saur10 жыл бұрын
Many of them still apply, but some unfortunately do not. But to be honest, a direct comparison between the titles is not my intention. I want to give the community all the knowledge I gained while working on writing guides for this type of game. I want to give something which can be taken away and applied to ALL games. I believe that the future of these games lies with the gaming community. If a knowledgeable community demands the very best from the designers of these games then we can be assured that the genre can continue to grow and evolve. Currently we are in a situation where the "professional" gaming press make absolutely sure that they destroy the reputation of any mechanically deep games before they even get a chance to become established. Thus game designers have to intentionally pander to these people, or else. I don't want dumbed down, functionally standardised games; I want games which challenge, games which teach the player new skills and reward effort. I believe that with increased knowledge, the gaming community will demand what's right.

One thing that irks me with Bayonetta 2 is the new Targeting. I'm so used to using the rb lock on button and dodging out the way with A + left stick. This doesn't appear the be the case with B2 and the move to Targeting on the left trigger must be for some reason. Apart from that it's pretty glorious!
@lumrules10 жыл бұрын
You can change the controls back to how they were in the original in the settings menu.
@kevvymetal472710 жыл бұрын
lumrules This is true yes! But Alternative Dodge still appears to be missing! While playing Bayo 2 with Bayo 1 control settings, holding Right bumper to target then A+left stick results in Bayonetta jumping straight up rather than dodging.
@thelastgogeta10 жыл бұрын
Sort of have the reverse problem as I got used to Bayo 2's demo and expected the controls to be the same when I started Bayo 1, though of course a missing dodge option is more important than whether I think a trigger is a better fit for locking on with the GamePad. At best, they can patch it in. At worst, we will adapt to get around the missing option. A shame still.

Yes, when I was writing the guide for Future Press we had no communication with Platinum whatsoever until right at the end of production. We had to work out each and every mechanic ourselves, we even had one of our guys trying to work out damage values based on the enemy health bars! But thankfully Platinum stepped in at the end and went through the entire book and corrected all the things we approximated. It turned out right in the end and I learned a huge amount about how a game like this is designed in the process.

I'm hoping to release these weekly, I've got the next script written and will begin editing shortly. What I want to accomplish with this guide is to present a solid foundation of knowledge which players can take away and apply to many other games. As for Bayonetta 2, I really wanted to have episodes ready in time for the game's launch, but unfortunately that was not possible. I am planning a preliminary episode to cover the system changes though, please keep a look out for it.

***** That amazing man. Keep up the awesome work. I'll definetly be looking out for more knowledge. As for the current in-game footage - Is that from the xbox 360 version or from the HD remake? Also, how does the Wii U controller fare control wise compared to the more beefy Xbox controller?

Mathias Lunau All footage is from the Xbox 360 version. I'm really fussy when it comes to controllers, I absolutely struggle to use the Xbox 360 controller and I will be switching back to my Dual Shock 3 for future episodes. I've always played Bayo with a Dual Shock 3 via a USB convertor, I struggle to undo so many years of muscle-memory! :D I find both the Wii U Gamepad and Classic controller absolutely fine to use, until you start trying to roll from Jump to Punch. As the buttons are so close together you have to come up with a completely different way to enter the input, I'm still working on it...

Keep playing. You'll get better. Sooner or later, dodging will be automatic whenever you see or hear certain cues. Then from there, you can try more complicated combos. Also, look on the bright side. Please keep an eye out for the next episode, I will aim to release it this weekend. We address this very thing! The key to the layer of the game you are having problems with is the fact that you don't have to be ready. The Prima guide for Bayonetta 2 is a glorified instruction manual. It doesn't go into detail about anything and is complete garbage. BTW, I'm loving this series so far. Can't wait to see the rest!

TooFast00 That's such a shame, I'm sorry to hear that. It is extremely difficult to obtain the licencing rights and permission to produce Official Guides for games, it's also an uphill battle selling them due to the negative experience many customers like yourself report.When you have so many guides being described in the way you have done, how then do you convince your potential customers that you do things differently?Nintendo already have a deal in place with Prima, this makes it impossible for other creators of guides to work with Nintendo published games.

Catbus Re-uploading now!I I originally did upload at 60fps, but KZbin hadn't enabled it yet. Hopefully it should work this time. Going forward all episodes will be 60fps.
