Like Hargreaves wife's rant about how he never listens - every time we see them this season she is asking Hargreaves to do something and he does it. Or 5s time travel, why is it that he can timejump with Lila when they want to stop themselves from meeting Jennifer then when they get lost in the timeliness they live off of rabbits and strawberries like go back in time?? Ben spiking everyone's drinks is wildly out of character imo. He has a huge superiority complex in season 3, just got out of jail for a crime he believes was wholly justified, and does not seem to care at all about his family. I honestly don’t know why he gives them the marigold as well, especially since it's really the only choice he makes in the season.

What makes no sense in the final season of umbrella academy is the fact that no one remembers how Ben died. And have no memory of Jennifer. But In season 3 episode 6. Luther is telling Ben that he died trying to save Jennifer. Which contradicts the fact that they don’t remember in season 4. It legitimately makes zero sense. 😂

She was never an assassin in THIS timeline, but it still effects her because even without physical evidence it did happen, just like how Five still killed her parents.

My big quesion about the subway is: how come no one goes in there? There is an entrance in every singe timeline, but no one goes in. Not even stuck-in-apocolypse-five goes there after he saw himself come out of it? And why were they eating rats when they can just walk out into all different timelines (they are not all apocalyptic?). The concept implies so much more then what we were told. I actually like that Luther got Pogo-DNA from the marigold, because that moment reasured me i don't need to worry. There's no mistery i'm not getting, it's just nonsense not meant to be figured out.

That was all about Timmy trying to do nice things for people but isn't appreciated for it because hes "not doing a good enough job" so he wishes he was never born Only to get shown an alternate timeline where he was never born and gets it rubbed in his face how everyone he's ever met is significantly happier without him and ends with him wishing he was never born and the show congratulating him for basically wishing for suicide? I haven't heard this take (7:23) in any other reviews, but this is exactly how I felt when I was watching this ending. The Umbrella Academy had always been my comfort show, and I watched season 4 during a rough time, and after watching the ending I just had this feeling of hopelessness, as if nothing that we do matters, no matter how much we suffer, grow, and endure, we can always regress and die with our lives having no meaning at all. :)

This show had sooo much potential to be a wacky fun show with a profound philosophical messages about humanity, life and family. Reginald is an extremely intelligent alien but whose world view is very black and white. He does not see the value of love between siblings/family and actually considers it a proof of human inferiority. The miracle substance Reginald spread that produces superpowers + his cold and loveless parenting methods created broken siblings. They however, held on to each other and their lives with love, something that Reginald did not teach them. The world is not black and white and love is not insignificant, but really something that makes people special, something that helps to get through impossible situations. And what happens at the end: There is no other way, there is no gray, there is only one way and sisterly love or nothing else has no say in it. Reginald has made his "children" so broken that they are destroying the Earth over and over again endlessly and the only way to fix the situation is to remove them from existence. What a greate message 😒

How did not a single one of them see the marigold in their drinks? They were drinking sake, a clear liquid. I would think it would be pretty obvious there was gold in it. And Alison wasn't watching out for Klaus. When they were all about to drink sake she was encouraging him to drink. How did 5 never find a way back sooner? All they did was hop on the train, go one stop, and then took the train back the way they came. Also, when the subway map is shown as the years go by, you can see they've crossed off every single stop. How was it not one of them was the correct exit? And why did years go by but only hours for everyone else? At the end how is it Diego's kids exist if he never exists and all other timelines are destroyed. Who left the notebook? And why would 5 put the notebook where it would be very hard to find? Why didn't the other 5 at the commission tell him about the notebook? So many questions and no answers. This season sucked.

It's just terrible writing all around. Reg getting shot at but forgets he's an alien. Lila magically hating bracelets even though she stole the bracelet Diego made at the ward. How the heck does Lila have parents when they were killed. 5 being so smart and paranoid but can't even see what's happening at his job. Luther getting his gorilla body even though it was from reg medicine. Where the heck was Pogo. Why the heck would Reg hire an entire town to keep the umbrella academy from finding her when he could have literally just sent her to a 3rd world country instead of in the same country as them. The icing of the cake is the fact that season 3 they created a grandfather paradox but in this season they literally did the same thing my taking the kids from one universe and putting them in the original in which their parents don't exist which would create a grandfather paradox.

Kugelblitz plot hole aside, there's one thing that might have lightened the mood of the ending, and that would be a simple cut back to 1989, where we see Viktors mother giving birth completely naturally with the dude she was flirting with at the pool by her side, and deciding to name their child Vanya. It would be a nice book end to the series, ending in a parallel to how it started, and showing us that the Umbrella characters are all still out there, now getting the lives they should have had, free of Reggie. That would have been quite nice.

I kept on waiting for the show to do something with Reggie. Like, he is *very* insistent that he's not their Reggie in any timeline they've met him, and therefore, not to blame for anything *their* Reggie did... But what if, Reggie was the same being existing across all timelines? That he *did* treat the siblings abusively? That he *did* kill Ben? He is an alien; it wouldn't be such a stretch to say that members of their species exist like that. It would explain why his doormen recognized the family when they came to talk to him, and why Reggie knew it was they who destroyed New Grumpson. That would at least make Viktor's confrontation with him actually mean something! Hell, it would open the door for all of the siblings to air their grievances. ARGH! This season could have been something great, but instead, we got character regression and an icky love triangle!

in my mind Ben and Jennifer being twins would have been fitting. Ben finding out his father had sent him on a mission to kill his twin sister and that being the connection they felt instead of lust and romance. Then turning to one makes more sense? Jennifer’s giver of birth was the giant squid maybe. Or she was thrown away and saved by the squid and the durango. I still need to read the comics the series is not so based on.

Another thing I got annoyed about is that they never gave Five a name. The numbers were something that original-timeline-Reginald gave the kids to distinguish between them; he never saw them as people, just experiments. He only gave them names when they were beginning to go public (check me on that-- I haven't seen season 1 in a while) so Five never got one. When we got a time jump I was so excited to see what identity Five had made for himself past "I need to save my family and the world from x cataclysmic event", but then the CIA boss called him "Mr. Five" so I thought "oh, clever, he's using his old name as a codename" but NOPE. In season 3 they even mentioned Five being retired, it would have been really cool to see him thrust into being a dysfunctional adult and learning how to grow up in the real world after growing up in an apocalypse... devastated.

I'm so glad everyone agrees it sucked, I loved this show so much and half of this season was like bad sitcom writing😭 There was some cast interview where they were reading fan theories and they clearly thought every theory would've worked better for S4 than what it actually was. Huge let down, feels like no one who worked on the previous seasons was left and Netflix just wanted to put it to bed. Even the fact it's all crammed into 6 episodes! when you reached the diego/lila/ five thing, you took the words right of my mouth and put more of my thoughts into words. i never put a connection between how five treated lila with how reggie treated abigail besides me just finding it so dumb dude finds out his supposed wife hates him for reviving her and he’s just like “oh i love you snookums ☺️” before dying. this season left me so empty and it’s not much about how they sacrificed themselves to be erased from all timelines, but just about how everything ended with them. their relationships were the heart of the show and why many love it alongside the plot and mystery around how the umbrellas and others came to be. ending the show with everyone further apart than ever and be strangers like s1e1 is beyond frustrating and depressing. also the fivelila thing just haunts me more since steve himself admitted that aidan was 18 and five supposedly MUST have a love interest and that lila was perfect, in his words. it just gives a lot of people the ick that he and the writers waited until he was legal to make him kiss and be implied to hook up with a grown adult. diego’s actor would question steve a lot about if he was sure about doing this and ritu, lila’s actor, thought it was a joke until it happened. it just feels like steve had a huge hand in the writing to forget what happened in previous seasons from the jennifer incident, klaus’ whole arc over three seasons, or anyone’s arc. it’s just…??? also the whole powers thing seem like they tried to combine stuff from the comics into the show in a messy way. they shoulda just cancelled or netflix give a bigger budget and the usual 10 episodes. i’m done ranting now and need a cleanse 🤧

The way Steve talks about Five 'needing' a love interest and Lila being the perfect option is so dismissive of Lila's character, and it's so obvious that he only saw Lila as a plot device. I had a lot of problems with this season. My biggest one was just that it wasn’t fun. The jumbled and wasted plot lines took all of the interest out, the characters were either fighting or ending up in a relationship I don’t even wanna talk about, they didn’t use their new powers in fun ways… I just didn’t have fun watching it, which sucks bc I love this show :(

From my understanding, in the S4 timeline, the marigold was never released which is why they didn’t have their powers. So none of the other kids who had powers in the original timeline would have powers in the S4 timeline either.

My personal theory is that, in the first draft, it was meant to go like: -episode 1: Lila and Five access the subway without powers and get lost for 5 years so they don't have to age down Gallagher (who is supposed to be 14 in the serie) in post production -they discover something shocking (maybe a stop to hotel oblivion with the original characters still trapped inside?) and keep the secret from the family -Diego misunderstands it and get jealous 'cause funny masculine steretype -later we get a lot of time spent in the subway with the main character trying to contact different version of themselves while managing timetraveler psychosis and the fact that only Five and sometimes Lila can jump But the production realized that putting a timeskip at season start for everybody could save a lot of money through not having to convoke the actors for Sloane and Ray, reducing the child actors on the set and also having zero scenes with a supposedly 14 years old Five to young up in post production. Also, cutting out Sloane erases all the Luther scenes from the season, and helps pull down the episode count from 10 to 6. At the point, probably, the promotional posters with the subway where already commissioned. This produced a mostly useless subway that Five keeps secret for no reason, Diego getting jealous of Five two times and Five going through two time skips.

I have a pretty severe phobia of vomiting, season 2s scene nearly took me out. I hated season 3 but nothing horribly graphic. I don’t understand and never will why people find that shit funny or entertaining. When I heard about the scene in this recent season, I knew I was gonna skip this whole season. Hearing how bad it is broke my heart, as I really believe season 1 is one of the best Netflix has ever made. Though I always felt like I just heard it was terrible. The ending feels like it was taken from Netflix Dark outside the context of Netflix Dark: reveal that protagonists never should have existed, return them to the original timeline/ parallel universe, erase them from existence across all timelines/ parallel universes, show the side characters living average lives outside the show's intrigue.

Heres how it couldve ended. My point of view, idk if yall will like it. The umbrellas think of ways to fight the Durango, but they are unable to do so, slowly they come to terms with their fate. But Viktor has other ideas. He thinks, he can just take everyones powers and go to the Durango alone, thats the only way his siblings can live because the durango is only after the marigolds right? "Guys, I love you all" then he shoots out his powers (paying homage to season 1 episode 10, when Viktor was killing the siblings with the light tentacles). This time he was saving their lives. The siblings are now rid of their powers. Viktor doesnt say a word but rather locks them up in that store then goes to fight the Durango alone. Since he is the only marigold left, only he will be the target. The Durango goes after Viktor, he doesnt fight it, he lets it take him. The siblings try to escape, try to save their favorite sibling but they fail. Viktor dies, he saved everyone this time instead of being the one to end the world. The End

The issue I had with the ending was that the siblings went through SO much to save the world (four times) just for it to apparently not have mattered at all. Were they the ones that kept indirectly causing the apocalypses? Yeah, we’ve known that ever since Viktor blew up the moon in season one. But to me, the point was that, even though their dysfunctional upbringing causes them to make messy world-ending decisions, they (Five) always managed to fix it (out of love for his family, despite its flaws). I love Viktor, but I feel as though he should’ve sacrificed himself to save the siblings. Since he can take the Marigold out of Ben, why can’t he take it from the siblings and be the one to stay and let it absorb? In my opinion, it would’ve been a great way to end his arc.

There were just so many points where I was like, WHAT?! WHY?! That makes no sense?! Why did Layla get laser eyes, then later on could randomly get other people’s abilities again. Why did Luther get his ape body back when it wasn’t the marigold that did that, and why can he block bullets, but then gets knocked out by a car crash just as easily as everyone else? Why did Klaus randomly fly at the end? Why did he get Quinn to shoot him for no reason? Why can 5 time travel perfectly suddenly, and why can’t he teleport regularly when he can time travel so well? Why don’t the other 5s at the end come to the same conclusion as our 5? Why does Reginald’s wife give the umbrella academy the Marigold when she knew it would split the timelines? And if she didn’t know the cleans would fix the timelines, then is her reason really “she felt bad for killing her home planet, so she felt she had to pay by getting killed in the process of destroying another planet?” If the answer to that is the umbrella academy weren’t supposed to exist because of the Marigold, then what happened to the other 35 children? Why would the cleanse fix Earth but destroy Reginald’s home world in the first place?

I think the only I can answer is that I think Klaus had Quinn shoot him because 1) he was just that depressed and wanted to feel something else OR 2) he gets "high" from dying and rescurrecting, this is just a theory I've had. Which could explain why getting his powers back to come back to life was so upsetting for him - because it was a relapse in a way.

I thought his hole arc at the end of season 3 was about accepting his powers and no longer being afraid of them. I also thought him being afraid of dying was a consequence of him losing his powers, so he’d want them back. I guess if he somehow got high off of dying then that could lead into him doing drugs again. Which was why he didn’t want them back. On another note, it would have been nice to see him enter the afterlife too. That was interesting to see in season 3, and I was a little disappointed when they didn’t show it in the new season.

So I don't think Abigail giving them split the timeline it was already split from season 1. She gave them it to start the cleanse in this timeline as she felt her being brought back to life was against nature/her will. She felt her being dead was fair punishment for destroying her world

well I think Sloane wouldn't exist since the Marigold babies weren't born in the reset timeline. The Umbrellas only exist in the reset timeline because Reginald programmed it that way because of his deal with Allison, and when she made that deal she was angry so we can pretend she just told him not to include Sloane in the new timeline.

How was Five able to travel back and forth through time so effortlessly(Phoenix Academy scene)? Even if they could go back in time to stop Ben from going to that mission that wouldn't solve anything it would just create another timeline, how does Five not realise that? They set up for 3 seasons that Five cant travel through time confidently, but now he just can and he doesnt use it to go back just a few days ago

THEY MESSED UP EVERYONE'S CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT!! five the guy went from "loves his family more then anything" to "leave his family to die for his sister-in-law". his character was the most fucked up since he wouldn't be this lovesick fool who would leave his family to die. lila was this psychotic chick who has sm depth to her but she was reduce into elena gilbert who is in the middle of the love triangle with brothers - diego and five. klaus whole side-quest was utterly useless and he went back to using drugs again just cuz he got his powers back?? also when klaus was locked up in the coffin why didn't he freak out as much?? did the writers forget about the seasons prior?? the only character they kinda got right is sparrow ben since he is an asshole so no real complaints about him. they really 'game of throned' season 4...

I hate how they kept alluding to everything being a simulation or computer program, with lots of graphical glitches in scenes to make it look simulated. I don't understand how you can have the end of season 3 literally about Reginald PROGRAMMING reality and then not ever mentioning it ever again.

The timeline thing annoys me most. I can understand or handway most things but I assumed that time was still while they were in the subway system. Like how when they were outside the timeline in previous series they'd return to about the same time they left. But the greenhouse throws a wrench in that. Are we to understand they only went out the subway over 5 months enough to add up to a few hours? No. So then why does time pass at all for them if time in other timelines doesn't count? Its like benedicts 3 day 3 some in brigerton lol

when they went into the other timeline, they jumped back to 2006. so they're lost in the subway starting in 2006, and then 7 years later is 2013. when they find their way home, it's probably 2013 in their timeline so they actually have to jump forward to 2024 to return to the family.

This was my comfort show. The first couple seasons specifically made me soooo so happy and I listened to the soundtrack over and over for years. I desperately wish it had just been cancelled I don’t know how much enjoyment I can get out of rewatching the other seasons knowing they all literally kill themself and nothing mattered. It kinda winds me and hurts my heart to think about. I don’t really know how to handle it but I’m going to miss rewatching this show so much

I think the explanation is Netflix gave a very half hearted "final season" with a very reduced budget, that also had to be shot very quickly so there was no time to perfect scripts. It really is the only explanation. This video nails everything wrong. It was like a bad first draft where they did not even bother lining it up with what came before. Sloppiness was everywhere. I think characters like Luthor and Allison's love interests were just dropped because they could not get the actors, either because they had to do it "now" or they did not want to do it for greatly reduced pay because they would have little scenes. They paired Five with Lila because they felt Five having a real love (not a mannequin) was what they wanted to do but Lila was literally the only non relative character left. Like, it all fits into this explanation. It was rushed and cheap and it showed. They even dropped the whole Ben teaser from last season. Did not even bother to explain it. Just a real slap in the face to everyone who watched this little show for four years.

this season was SOOO odd and misguided. actually genuinely cried when i finished watching the finale season because it was that bad. what happened to old man five..? why is he acting like a teenager? why has viktor been turned into an angry teenage boy instead of the incredibly developed and talented man he is? so much of season 1 vik was showing how he literally had to care for himself in so many facets of life (as they all did but bro if you watched the show yk.) and has always been more reserved? klaus relapsing after the marigold goes back into him is kinda like a kick in the face as someone who has addicts for a parent, i can't imagine how it would feel to the individuals themselves. it has been established that he was gaining so much control over his powers. why take that away from him? why make him be forced back into the same endless active addiction side plot? ☹️

Loki, which ripped off a lot of elements from this show, did much better with the paused time-space zone. Loki uses the infinity time loop he’s achieved to learn everything he needs to over thousands of years to then go and restore the branches of time and prevent an inescapable cataclysm. In this show they similarly had a time-frozen zone in which to step out of the impending apocalypse and devise a plan to prevent it, but the show was more interested in victim-blaming the characters into mass suicide. Brilliant. You know, I wasn’t expecting a happy ending, but this is repugnant.

This season tore me up. Excellent review!! They should have had you on the writing team. I loved this show until 4. There was a slight decline in season 3 overall quality but i still loved it. I completely agree how they assassinated the characters. SO MUCH INJUSTICE HERE!! It probably seems very entitled but i had hoped for a fitting ending. I keep fantasizing that someone will come along and fix it. As it is right now it is a broken toe that will never heal and hurt until the end.

Excellent rant which I totally agree with. This is the only season where I actually paused episodes as I couldn't watch them in one sitting. So many plotholes and bad choices made it was just unbelievable. I really wish I'd never watched it as I now can't go back and rewatch (and enjoy) the earlier seasons knowing how it all eventually ended. Did no one in the editorial team ever question the choices made?
