I’m absolutely stunned that GPX offered something that competent! If they had more products like that, then they wouldn’t be so bad!!!

That beeping sound on shortwave was the CHU time signal station from Canada. They transmit on on 3.33, 7.335, and 14.67 MHz.

It's interesting that they used the GPX name back then. By the late '80s they were going by "Gran Prix", then later switched (back?) to GPX.

I’ve noticed that too… No idea haha.

Ha ha, I remember the Gran Prix brand. I used to see it in drug stores, on alarm clocks and cheap walkmans.

@@80s_Boombox_Collector I have a vivid memory of a Christmas when I was in elementary school - something like 30% of my class got those really cheap yellow GPX (Gran Prix) walkman knock-offs (the ones copying the Sony Sports models). I swear not a single one of those made it to February!
@80s_Boombox_Collector7 ай бұрын
@@probnotstech Lol, I actually owned one of those, it had these cheesy clasps over the tape door, kind of like the bars on top of a G-Shock watch.

Other GPX-isms: the disclaimer molded into the back cover says "produtct" and "servileable".

Now that you mention it, I had a vintage GPX radio receiver/stereo cassette player from the early 1980s for a brief period back when I was a teenager (though I can’t remember the exact model number)…. it said the exact same thing on the back panel, spelling errors and all (and although the AM radio portion actually did work surprisingly well, everything else wasn’t anything to write home about).

Good to know there's a version of this with decent power. I have the ABA version, and the rear label says it only makes 2 x 3.5 watts. And the sound quality shows.

In my day they called them "Ghetto Blasters"! 😁 I never knew GPX to make something THIS nice!

My first "Walkman" was an AM/FM GPX. Terrible, but I loved it. Never thought that brand made anything like this

Get your UN gpx onnnn! Goes to show they at least tried to put effort into things back then, even in the cheaper/lower end brands.

I don't know if you caught the typo in the warning but it says "no user servileable parts" oh and "produtct" the engrish is strong with this one.

LOL I didn’t even catch that haha!

Clearly the last person that tried to "service" this, was completely clueless. A nasty cigarette butt was the best this person could do for the tape and erase head? That's disgusting! 🤮 Great work on the repairs. 👍

Wow! I thought you found another GPX to destroy. Not so this time. The quality (if you can call it that) reminded me a lot of the first Soundesign electronics that weren't all that bad and included some very good hardware. I have a 80s music show on the radio. I've been meaning to use some of the GPX sayings from a multitude of your videos and turn it into a sweeper I can play. Oh gosh, I've been so busy. I might not get around to it.

i was lucky to get one of these off eBay before anyone else seen it for a measly $30! i was so excited! it was in good condition.. but the seller did the worst packing job i have ever seen.. i told her to please pack it well.. nope.. it arrived destroyed.. i did salvage parts from it.. but it sucked seeing a beauty like this unrepairable.. also rubbing alcohol will also remove paint specks or moderate paint..

It seems as though GPX at one point in time actually offered something that was good. Seems like they dropped the ball in the 1990’s but then again, everything in the 90’s was becoming bland and began to get cheap. Explains why the 80’s is the cutoff point in terms of appliances and cars for me.

Well well well, a GPX that isn't made from cheap crap that spews black stuff when in water.
