UNCSA Clarinet Professor Dr. Oskar Espina-Ruiz and his studio discuss their motivation behind adding contrabass clarinet to the UNCSA Clarinet Quintet and the mission of this new ensemble. The Clarinet Quintet was formed in 2021 with the goal of playing an active role in promoting racial equity in music. It also serves as a platform for UNCSA student-artists to develop artistic leadership and excellence, while promoting access to the arts in their community.
2022 projects include two performances at UNCSA’s Crawford Hall and a Watson Hall performance at the UNCSA Clarinet Day. They also completed a recording of works by Florence Price and Lawrence Dillon for upcoming video releases underwritten in part by a faculty leadership grant from the Thomas S. Kenan Institute for the Arts.
Current members are Oskar Espina-Ruiz and student-artists Clara Ruiz Medina, Mya Gibson, Manuela Miranda Puerta and Casey McGuire, with Trent Smart as a contrabass clarinet guest artist.
