Dude, the miniature work for this movie is amazing. It's a great creature flick, I remember it fondly. The giant arthropod wasn't awoken by the blast, it was trapped in the underwater cavern which got cut off from the rest of the ocean millions of years ago- so prehistoric life had survived there when it'd gone extinct everywhere else and flourished. Nia Peeples' character specifically referenced incidents of deep diving expeditions encountering very large creatures, and some of them never returned, indicating that these large animals were dangerous.

This and Leviathan were the actual first movies that sparked my interest in water monster movies. Then came Jaws and The Beast of course. I love these movies and wish they would do more like them.

I definitely consider it the second movie of 1989 as far as horror goes. THE ABYSS is a masterpiece of filmmaking, can't go past that, but DS6 is great, with a nice monster, good practical effects, and a nice, well crafted script. It compares to DEEP RISING to me, and that's high praise, since I adore DEEP RISING.
@guyvizard5492 жыл бұрын
Deep Rising is just pure entertaining fun. Tongue-in-cheek without being eye-rolling. In fact, I kind of always wanted Stephen Sommers to do another hard-R monster movie. He makes everything fun in his movies, including gore and horror.

The sonar scenes were always spine tingling. When the Captain and McBride pick it up and the music intensifies as it gets closer, that shows you can build proper tension without the typical jump scare. The monster’s reveal was awesome too as it leapt out to bite our diver in half, Schneider’s reaction to the alarms and attack felt like what a regular person would do in that situation.
@afzalhakimbinzairini9562 жыл бұрын
I might want to check this movie out because well it's a sci fi action adventure movie and the creature itself. This creature it's not just another shark or another monster fish. But it's a Prehistoric Arthropod which is back way during Cambrian, Silurian and Carbineforous Period. The time periods before the dinosaurs so that's awesome that another prehistoric creature get some popularity other than dinosaurs. And don't get me wrong, I still love seeing dinosaurs on screen like Jurassic Park, Jurassic World, Walking With Dinosaurs and all those cool stuffs. But I want other prehistoric creatures get some more spotlight on screen. Look at Walking With Beasts and Monsters, those turned out amazing and it made by the same studios that made Walking With Dinosaurs. I hope one day we can see other prehistoric creatures otherthan dinosaurs on the big screen like Wolly Mammoth, Smilodon, and hell even giant prehistoric instects would be supercool. I know there is movie called 10,000 BC which has Ice Age Animals but that movie was long, boring and forgettable. What I mean is that these prehistoric creatures can be brought to life by Stan Winston studios or Guillmero Del Toro would be awesome. These guys know how to do some cool stuff practical and CGI effects.

As a major fan of movies that feature prehistoric creatures I am one of the ones that absolutely loved “Deep Star Six”. The fact that this movie is made by the same guy who directed the very first “Friday The 13th” movie heavily reminds me of when Tobe Hooper, the guy that directed the very first Texas Chainsaw movie made “Crocodile”. Also speaking of underwater monster movies can you please cover the movie simply titled “Underwater” starring T.J. Miller and Kristen Stewart? It was made in 2017 but didn’t get released until 2020 from what I’ve read. It’s a major rebirth of this deep water monster genre and to me personally DragonCurve I think you may get a kick out of it.

I think you're underrating The Abyss's fame, that movie is always on AMC constantly and is widely regarded as a great film just for all the underwater filming techniques Cameron pioneered alone. Plus you have some of the best use of early CGI in it mainly when the NTIs send that water probe to look around the base.
@marcoslaureano55622 жыл бұрын
The problem with all these movies was that 1989 was absolutely OWNED by Batman - and I'm not kidding. I was about 11 and I remember the lines stretching around the block in most New York City theaters. Even a huge budget movie like Dick Tracy got totally swamped by Batman - we'd never seen anything like that kind of reaction in the 80s. Besides that Back To the Future II and Ghostbusters II hit pretty big, so did Lethal Weapon II, Tango and Cash, Major League, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, Indiana Jones III, Honey I Shrunk The Kids, Look Who's Talking, Field Of Dreams, Pet Sematary, Weekend at Bernies - they were all relatively big hits at the box office. People had kind of gotten burned out on sci-fi movies by the mid 80s, so they mostly waited until they hit the VHS rental places to check them out. With the exception of the movies you mentioned and one or two more, the selection of sci-fi movies in '89 was pretty trashy.

The selling point of practical effect monsters is they look alive, their movements are imperfect, not digitally programmed, but discordant, as living creatures are, their structure, body shape and texture is flawed, scarred and uneven; their appendages aren't equal, and they're slimy, not just shiny, ooze drips from them. They look dirty. They look alive, if done well. Something which CGI can easily miss. This was a good movie.

I love Deep Star Six. I liked it more than the Abyss tbh. The Cold War paranoia, the fact that many of the characters felt more real, and even the uniqueness of the monster being a kind of super arthropod, kind of made me fall in love with the movie. Snyder (Miguel Ferrer's character) in particular feels more real to me these days because, he's just this kind of schmuck that takes his job too seriously ... despite the fact that he's not very good at it. He isn't really a bad guy so to speak, just a deeply flawed one in a situation that is WAY above his pay grade. He isn't malicious, or even really incompetent (despite not knowing that aggression in context means armed MILITARY aggression, NOT bis ass angry lobsters), but doesn't handle stress well and buckles pretty quick under pressure.

I remember seeing this in theatres on release, and have watched it many times since then. There is just something about films by Sean S Cunningham which enthrals me. The cast are great, and they all fall into the category of “hey, I know that guy/ gal”, and a few of them went on to bigger things. Miguel Ferrier (RIP) is excellent as the (human) antagonist. And the “monster” is great, for its time. Overall, I found this to be a solid “B” movie, which came so close to being an “A”, if you will. The Abyss was a great story, with a huge budget, and the end result was very slick. But Deepstar Six shows that you can still turn out a great movie, without spending a ton of money. Cheers,

I actually enjoy this movie, as well. Yeah, it's no masterpiece, but it's a fun, entertaining monster flick. Probably helps that I have very nostalgic feelings about seeing it in theaters with my dad after we'd just moved into a new house, I'd just started high school, and the future seemed bright. But, still...it's a lot of fun. Makes a great double feature with "Leviathan" (which I prefer). Strangely enough, I introduced my girlfriend to both of those films recently and she liked this one better than "Leviathan," so...there's that.

Personally, I always thought The Abyss was overrated. Meanwhile, I really enjoyed Deep Star Six. I have this thing for underwater horror, maybe because it’s about people trapped in a facility that’s still on Earth but also an alien environment where help or escape is difficult to reach. And Deep Star 6 was probably my favourite film like that until Underwater came out in 2020. The creature was cool and it was far more believable than the creatures from the Abyss or Leviathan.
