Donald Stratton wrote a book, available from Amazon, entitled, "All The Gallant Men" in which he details what happened aboard the Arizona on December 7, 1941. He was medically discharged having suffered 2nd and 3rd degree burns over 65% of his body. He went home to Nebraska to heal then reenlisted in the Navy, passed boot camp for the 2nd time and was assigned to the USS Stack, a destroyer and was present in Tokyo Bay on September 2, 1945 to witness the surrender. He was one of the only men who were present the day of the attack when the war started and the day it ended. It's a fantastic story of guts and determination. He passed away and rejoined his shipmates on February 15, 2020 at 97 y/o.

It is a shame no one had knew what to do with the communication sent from the USS Ward that morning that she fired on then did a depth charge run on a unknown sub sneaking into the mouth of the harbor.... Also a shame that HQ got a call from the new Army radar station that picked up the IJN flight coming in from the North West, and they dismissed it as a flight of B-17's from the mainland that would come in from the North East... Tho with the fleet in the harbor there was more folks saved form the water then if they would have gotten put to sea tho I doubt the boilers would have had enough time to get to a point where they could be under way but would have given the AA guys time to get ammo and to stations with some air craft in the air other then the 2 or 3 fighters that did make it while the attack was going.... Few remember the USS Ward and her crew got the first kill in of the war with sinking one of 5 or 6 IJN mini subs that was sneaking in for there part of the attack....

Rear Admiral Issac C. Kidd was another casualty of the Pearl Harbor attack, the Arizona was his flagship. Later when the first USS Kidd was named in his honor, the crew asked his widow if they could fly the skull and crossbones flag in reference to the pirate Kidd. She gave them permission and USS Kidds today still honor that agreement.

My dad's oldest brother was sfc Broadus Franklin West. He was the oldest of 7 from a small town in South Carolina. He was already in the serving in the Army at Schofield Army Air Base when my dad, who was the youngest, was born. My dad worshipped his big brother. After his tour in the Army, Broadus came home to help run my grandfather's gas station. He was a genius with anything mechanical - if it had an engine, he could fix it. The plan was that he would take over the station from my grandfather, who had heart disease. But when Hitler invaded Poland, he felt he needed to do something. He finally got my grandparents to relent & let him go, but only if he joined the Navy, because if the US joined the war, the Army would probably be deployed to Europe first, so they thought the Navy would be safer. Broadus was thrilled to get assigned to the USS Arizona as an engineer & serve at Pearl Harbor. He loved Hawaii. He died 2 days before his 26th birthday defending his ship. His remains were never recovered. My grandfather died of a massive heart attack just months before the end of the war. My grandmother never stopped blaming herself for letting him go. There is a memorial to him in the small cemetery where my grandparents & my Uncle Raymond are buried. I share his story as often as I can as my family's legacy.

Honestly, this is a pretty good story. I enjoyed it. :-) I really appreciate the presence of the veterans. I only have 2 feedback items. 1) The title is misleading. I expected to see a dive on the wreck, not a historical documentary. 2) At 44:00; the narrator, while describing the attack, says, "American fighter jets trying to chase the attackers." Fighter jets, eh? You been watching The Final Countdown?

Do you have any of the USS Ward? She started out the war with sinking a IJN mini sub sneaking in the harbor before the attack. Late war she got converted to a fast troop transport I think she was listed as,and kamikaze air craft sunk hit her after she unloaded her troops and taken a point as a picket...She ended up being fired on and sank by a destroyer that was commanded by the same guy who was in charge/on duty the morning of Pearls Attack... Well worth looking into. One of her guns is at the Minnesota State capital, where back in 91 I got to talk to one of her main gun crew members...

Must not of... I stopped just a bit past 1 min in when I heard him talking like the fleet had no warning at all.... USS Ward was on picket duty at the mouth of the harbor when she got a call of a para-scope was spotted fallowing a ship entering the harbor. The USS Ward found it, fired 3 shots with the 3rd putting a fist sized hole in the conning tower just above where it meets the main body of the tube then the crew ended up doing a depth charge run on it..... That IJN was 1 of 6 launched to sneak in and take part of the attack... Also the US Army had a radar station they just set up 7-3 days before and the radar crew picked up the flight of IJN air craft and called it in only to be told not to worry as it is a flight of B-17's that is expected from the mainland that would be coming in from the North East, there the IJN was coming in from the North West (out to sea not from main land direction) .... If someone would have listened to the radar crew some kind of alert should have been sent out to get the air fields air craft up in the air to investigate the unknown flight, and or the AA gunners would have been at there post rather in there beds...

Sorry, I hate the categorization that our Navy was caught napping; the Fleet's responsibility; while in port; is to repair, equip, train and prepare for operations at sea NOT to look for zeros in the sky. And the planes all line up nice and pretty on the runway is how planes are lined up on a runway when you are NOT at war. Go to any air base right now in the US, you'll probably see some of that same type of lining up on the runways. The Japanese caught us off guard because we never thought that they'd have the balls to attack us. Hell, it wasn't even a unanimously popular idea amongst the Japanese military establishment to attack the US; the Japanese's own Admiral Yamamoto was unconvinced that attacking Pearl was a good idea..."I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve."
@user-om6px1zy3d3 ай бұрын
Unfortunately, the US at Pearl Harbor and in the Philippines was unprepared even though a Japanese attack was expected somewhere

In fact. The planes were not usually lined up like that. But the Comander was more afraid of sabotage than air attacks! So he ordered them lined up close to the center of the runway.

Finding a shoe is just like the ocean floor where the Titanic went down, wherever they found two shoes, is where somebody actually landed & that's now a graveyard so to dive there too should be prohibited. It's the same as on the Arizona, these were young men, gone in an instant & in one of the worst ways imaginable. Just because you 'can' do it doesn't mean you 'should'. Leave them be & let them rest in peace. As for Don coming back, he should have been allowed to have that time in PRIVATE, without prying eyes & people gawking, taking pictures & videotaping.
