#3 is called “chunking” and works for all skills and memory tasks. You learn bigger and bigger building blocks, then you can build something bigger and more complex very easily.
@nahblue2 жыл бұрын
Not only chunking but also the prerequisite: comprehension. From simpler to more advanced. Let's say you see the chord progression C D G - what you take away depends on music theory knowlege. Maybe you first notice that these are chords that are familiar to me (starting with a very basic, but useful, step!). Then that they are all diatonic to G-major, then maybe functional relationships between them, or maybe you recognize this from a particular song in a different key, any kind of advanced concept like this - this is how more and more comprehension lets you form the chunks of information. :)

You're doing good BewmBawks, just be patient and you'll get great results. The kids and ''prodigies'' you see on the internet are generally combinations of mininum 3 hours daily practice + great teachers + extremely supportive parents who manage the practice sessions well. The kids may look innocent and naive, but they have had more time on the instrument than most adults- it just doesn't look like it from the surface level. In the end it all comes down to the hours you log in my opinion. Someone who has done 10,000 hours is going to play and see music in a completely different way to someone else who has logged 400 hours.

@@frqv I've been playing exactly 8 months too 😂want to share what we have completed so far?just saying I've only played the same 4 pieces for 4 months straight so not much progress more or less 4 months of practice but still what and how any pieces have you learned
@Robertbrucelockhart2 жыл бұрын
The speed at which one can learn a piece depends somewhat on what “learning” means. I hesitate to add to my repertoire because I continue to make little mistakes on previously learned pieces. I have this idea (inculcated in me by my first music teacher) that I should not move on to another piece until I have played the current one PERFECTLY. BUT since nothing is ever really “perfect,” that rather subjective standard makes it difficult to move on to another piece. I’m a self-teaching adult beginner on the piano, and there are still troublesome passages in all 8 pieces that I have “learned” in my first year of playing. My fear is always that I’m moving too fast.

Thanks! Now I don't feel guilty about spending 6 months on a very difficult cello etude. On piano, it's been helpful to do Hanon etudes and also play different pieces during the same practice session. I've recently taken up jazz piano and found that it has improved my overall musical performance in other genres, reinforcing what you are saying about quantity and variety. The flip side is that in playing too many pieces I end up learning morsels and not entire pieces.

Learning new pieces... I don't like moving on to a new piece until I've mastered the one I'm working on. This usually means practising a piece over and over until I can play it mistake free. This is probably the thing that slows me down the most. However, sometimes impatience takes over and I will start learning a new piece before completing the old one, so this has the added effect of slowing me down even further. There are a few pieces I've taught myself that are incomplete because of this. But I've started to see that the practising is having the positive effect of making reading the music easier, and I' not having to stop and think "what is that note again...?"

The first one is so true for me! For a long time I just stuck to the same old pieces because I was too lazy to learn new ones lol but now and over the past few years Ive been playing whatever songs inspire me (either by ear or youtube) and honestly it keeps me hooked on the piano. Whenever im learning a new piece I cant seem to stop because its so exciting!! And I love the challenge too! @Blake220222 жыл бұрын
Hey, hopefully you've figured it out a little by now but the best way is to play pieces. Know what quarter notes, eight, 16th sound like, as well as recognizing chords. Keep theory in mind while practicing. Only way to "practice theory" effectively is to play music. Theory is boring by itself. Knowing scales is good but theory only gets you so far without real practice on an instrument. Theory is a tool, people used to and still do get good without it. It's hard to get a good understanding of theory if theory is the only thing you focus on, because theory is based upon music, not the other way around

I especially connected with learning the piano language. I have been playing on a digital piano for about 8 months. I am a member of Pianote but I also subscribe to your channel as well. I have been following Pianote lesson plans so I am a ways from "reading" music yet. But I have been concentrating mainly on practicing the piano techniques, scales C, G, Am, Em, diatonic chords, chord inversions, intervals, arpeggios. I want to be able to play these smoothly and accurately because I figured then I would be able to pick up playing pieces easier.

Thanks Jazer for such great advice - as usual. Guilty as charged on mistake 1. When I started playing the piano 3 years ago I made a wish list of about 20 beautiful songs some classical (eg. Chopin nocturne op9 no2) and some pop music (eg. bridge over troubled water). I am still stuck with about 7. I think I have chosen some which are too hard for me and at the moment I am crawling like a sloth in the middle part of Chopin’s Tristesse. I think I also need to build up my technical skills before I tackle any difficult songs.

Great lesson Jazer, thank you. You mention learning 12 pieces in one year. That's practicing 1 piece per month. My problem with that is you get tired of playing that piece over and over for a whole hour or half hour of practice and my mind gets tired, bored or loses concentration. Then I practice 3 or 4 pieces in an hour and then I realize my ability to complete them slows down. Each of the two methods has its drawbacks. Any suggestions? I may have to practice 1 piece for a half hour in the morning and the same piece or maybe a different one a half hour in the evening so long as my mind does not get tired or bored. That will force me to be on a strict schedule every day along with all the other tasks to do that day. It just has to take time and hard work.

It depends on person, aims, or just what a person is happy with or content with. When I learn and play the piano ----- I put no pressure on myself. I don't get analytical about my progress - as I just know that if we are self-aware and pay attention to detail (eg. our own detail) and keep gathering techniques from good piano teachers - such as from the internet (Jazer is included among them) - then we will certainly become more experienced as time goes on. I don't perform for anybody - so my enjoyment of playing the piano is just for that --- the enjoyment of it. Interestingly, I never get bored of playing the same thing ----- the same thing that I really enjoy and love that is. Even if I play a billion times ---- I still enjoy it. This just highlights differences between people. Different people, different circumstances, different expectations/goals etc. For your case, maybe try to not consider situations as drawbacks. Taking time and putting in some effort is definitely normal ----- even for prodigy level musicians.

I've become much more disciplined over time. I think you have to be patient. I like jumping into challenging pieces perhaps once a month, putting everything into them, and then moving on. I've tried several piano concerti now. During the month, I also watch masterclasses or follow the sheet music while listening. There are many different skills which have to come together - memory, understanding the music, coordination, expression, speed, etc. And of course, I try to practise a lot. As long as I do a bit better each time, I think I'm progressing a lot!

It's like your vids are speaking directly to me! I am a guilty glosser at the moment. I was bordering advanced at a young age. Stepped away for 15 years. Def was not at the same level coming back to it during lockdown. This is a sport where you CAN lose your swing, folks! I made a drastic error of taking on pieces I'm not ready for. Not just with comprehension. Literally, the muscle in my wrist/arm isn't built up enough YET to take on the speed of some of them. I wasted months focusing on where I wanted to be barely making progress in 1 piece. Staying in my lane to build on the foundation for exponential growth would've served a whole lot better. Recognizing your level (weaker areas) and pacing yourself are so important for avoiding the trap of becoming discouraged or worse... starting to worry if neurological issues are at work. My hands were separate beings I could not control! But then you get it, keep getting it, and eventually play right through almost forgetting it was a problem. You are a phenomenal teacher.

I never play old pieces that I know well because there are no old pieces that I know well. The day I don’t play a piece is the day I begin to unlearn it. The longer I go without playing a piece, the closer I get to square one. So my repertoire consists entirely of the one or two pieces that I’m currently working on. And I learn at a snail’s pace, so that If I want to play a piece at Christmas, I start to learn it in the summer. I should mention that I’m quite old. My unsolicited advice-if you are young, learn as much music as you possibly can while your memory is still good. You won’t regret it. Don’t let youth be wasted on the young.

Its why my band instructor always had us play one measure at a time Then we would go from the beginning of the song and play all the way to that mesure in the music until we got that part of the song correct then we would learn a few more measures. We polished a few measures at a time until the end of the song. Then we would play the whole song through and polish it until it was perfect. Piano is like that for me I follow the advice of my band instructor taking each measure at a time until i polished that measure and i will move one to a new measure. Each time i would play the song my playing would improve. And a lot of the technicality that i have built is from my years in band and of course playing piano on and off from when i was 8 to when i was 15 just saying

Only guilty of 2 and 3, I can play 4 pieces, and next on the list is that nocturne I listen to everyday. Any advice on learning theory?

Огромное спасибо за канал! Очень интересно) Я начала учиться играть в 45 лет. Никуда не тороплюсь, прогресс минимальный. Мне нравится моя скорость обучения. Вопрос: что Вы думаете о Ear trainer app? Thank you for your videos! They are amazing! I started to play piano at 45, have little progress, but it makes me happy) What do you think about Ear trainеr app?

So you recommended practicing the scale the piano piece is in before practicing the music? Like as a warmup?

I barely know any music theory besides just basic scales and chords. Do you know of any good resources to learn music theory?

Hi everyone, Iam a beginner at piano I have had it for a month or so now of Claire’s I don’t need to tel you that I love it , I am just worried ether Iam practicing with bad technique or not as Iam teaching myself new pieces every day , because I don’t feel obligated to play I just do it as a hobby so I end up spending hours everyday on the piano , it’s extremely hard for me to learn sheet music so I tend to learn form midi but afraid it would bite me back in the future, in summary Iam afraid of leaning in bad technique as it will be so hard to change after ,l and don’t know how to start learning right , is there a plan or something to follow , please help by sharing your tips in the comments and thank you all

Currently i am learning my first song on piano (Yann Tiersen - Comptine d`un autre ete - l`apres-midi). After three weeks now, i am able to play the whole song. But i am constantly making errors on random points or parts (sometimes parts that i've played a hundred times right - suddenly an error). I am not able to play the whole song without an error. I too make errors when i play the song very slowy. It feels like i am constantly on autopilot, since i learned the last part of the song. How can i erase those random errors. I'm geting a bit frustrated :/ Great work and Thank you!
