you'd be surprised by all the times that it was actually used. One thing for example is that before breaststroke was established with the starting rules swimmers were allowed to do it the whole way underwater so long they were doing symmetrical movements, but that ends up with many people loosing consciousness under water.

Just read a little of her life story and it is pretty interesting. She worked one summer as a lifeguard and the powers that be decided that was professional work and she was disqualified from all future olympics and collegiate scholarships even though she was one of the top swimmers in the world. She had some tough breaks.

That one girl in particular had such a slow reaction time. Even at the most recent olympic games I recall noticing a significant difference among start times compared to like 100m track sprinters for example where everyone reacts within like 0.1 seconds of each other.

This swimmer paid the price of the incompetence of the athletic officials. I don't swim butterfly, but my niece always qualifies for that event at the Olympic trials. Now there are other controversial decisions that the officials make for political reasons that deny many swimmers the opportunity to swim those races. Merit, politics, technology advances, and sponsorship issues appear to be obstacles participants have to endure just to have the chance to compete.

I'm not very creative just because she said her times were faster than the times in the 1960 olympics doesn’t mean she’s disrespectful at the slightest bit. She didn’t say anything like “these olympians were trash” or “I can’t believe these were Olympic swimmers”. Since I was a swimmer before as well, these times today are more than beatable in today’s swimming, even at age 13 (swimmers at even younger ages could beat these times set in the 1960 olympics). With that being said, I’m pretty sure she says that with no disrespect and that she is more than aware that they were still world-class swimmers at the time.

I swam when I was younger and my times were faster then the Olympic times in the 60's. I breathed in water once my senior year of college and was just coughing for like 30 minutes. It surprised me because I’ve lived at the beach my whole life and never recall breathing in any significant amount of water. I don’t even know how or why it happened. I was actually in an indoor pool in February and found the literal freezing air outside easier to recover in for some reason. It was scary for a brief moment before I knew I could breathe in enough air between the coughs. I had heard about dry drowning and would be darned if an experienced swimmer like myself were to come to that.

the same happened with me in school games, it was breast stroke and i was leading with another guy pretty close when this happened. The fault was mine though, I swallowed in water and felt an urge to stop, but somehow I could not do that and ended up just somehow reaching the end line with just kicks. That would have resulted in state level qualification but I missed out on it, and had to focus more on studies than on swimming.

Many such pool still exist, especially in competitions in less developed countries. Had one in Thailand a few years back, not only were the water level low, my coach said the layout of the pool made the waves even worse, the walls were high walls but with drains in the middle of it. One of the worse pools I swam in, the warm-up pool walls were covered in algae and the diving boards had no grip. One of my teammates had to get stitches as he slipped during a relay dive and his shin hits the diving board

No honey. There’s a difference between swallowing water or even choking on water as opposed to actually having your lungs completely empty of air and inhaling only water. I’ve had all three happen and although the first two are inconvenient, the second even being a little scary, actually inhaling purely water on empty lungs is literally like drowning. It is excruciatingly painful and TERRIFYING.
