Carl Wilson Life Story (1946 - 1998) The Beach Boys Lead Guitarist Carl Wilson is one of the most-loved and much-missed vocalists and musicians of his generation, whose glorious voice and authoritative guitar graced scores of great recordings. His premature death at just 51, on February 6, 1998, robbed us of many more years of his fine work. Carl Dean Wilson was an American rock and roll singer and guitarist, best known as a founding member, lead guitarist and sometime lead vocalist of The Beach Boys. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988. Wilson played the Chuck Berry-esque guitar parts on many of the band’s early hits. Because the band first became successful when he was in his teens, he was still developing as a musician and singer. His lead vocals in the band’s first three years included “Summertime Blues” (duet with David Marks), “Louie, Louie” (splitting the lead with Mike Love), “Pom Pom Play Girl,” “All Dressed Up for School”, and “Girl Don’t Tell Me”. When the band started being augmented or replaced by session musicians on many of their mid-’60s recordings (they contributed the majority of the instrumental work themselves on the early-’60s recordings), unlike the other members of the band Carl often played side by side in the studio with the session pros that Brian increasingly turned to from 1964 onward, or recorded his guitar leads during the Beach Boys vocal sessions, with his guitar plugged directly into the soundboard. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Subscribe To The Remember This KZbin Channel Here ► geni.us/RememberThisChannel ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ 💥 History and Nostalgia Channel (20th Century History Documentaries)💥 Welcome to the Remember This KZbin History and Nostalgia Channel where we discuss thought provoking subject matter from recent the recent past to modern day... get ready for 20th Century History Documentaries content on all things from conspiracy theories to real events and how they shaped our lives. I had the good fortune to see The Beach Boys live in 1995. Carl was always being overshadowed by Mike Love, but his lead vocals on "Good Vibrations" and "God Only Knows" were downright angelic. It wasn't until he died that people realized that he was the glue holding the group together.

Carl probably didn't mind Mike taking the attention. When Carl had a brief solo career in the early 80s, he said he gained more respect for Mike's roll as front man. Carl wasn't comfortable in that position.
@Shikta-poobah672 ай бұрын
@@truthtransistorradio6716That’s because Carl was an introvert, and Mike is the epitome of an _extrovert._ Mike loves to put himself out there and ham it up. Carl preferred to hang back and express himself through his guitar playing, and sing the occasional lead. Without a doubt Carl had the best voice of any of the Beach Boys, and sang lead on some of their finest songs, but he wasn’t exactly aching to get up on the mic. That was very much Mike’s thing.

Carl's voice was the magic glue behind the Beach Boys iconic sound. Back in 1998 without social media most fans had no idea he was sick. I just remember turning on my computer and getting an email that he had passed...I was blindsided. Carl was my favorite with that snappy surf guitar and angelic voice! I Can Hear Music and God Only Knows are two of their best songs on a very long list of great songs, perhaps 60+ really good hits. Loved them in the early and mid 60's and never get bored with the best group ever. Nobody has accomplished what Brian Wilson amassed and he is truly the behind the scenes genius, taking the group way past what any other group ever could. Nobody can match the vocals and instrumental sounds like the Beach Boys. Lets not forget Alan Jardine who also got better to be invaluable to the group.

When Paul McCartney came out to the media to admire the Beach Boys, saying that God Only Knows was his favorite song of all time. This was a direct salute to both, Brian for his wonderful writing of this beautiful song made for Carl to sing and also a salute to Carl for a job very well done! Then when Pet Sounds came out we heard the audio of the Beatles freaking out about what will they now do to compete with that. They sounded pretty concerned about how they would ever be able to reach that high of a level of an album. Sgt Pepper's was good but had not accomplished- the complexity of sounds like Pet Sounds and frankly many other albums as well.

@webnatura Have seen numerous interviews with Paul over the years, talking about how Brian has influenced him, and how much he admires the song God Only Knows. But I haven't seen or read any interviews with Paul talking about how well Carl sang God Only Knows, or what Paul thought of Carl and the other Beach Boys, both as singers and musicians. Maybe he wants to keep his opinions about the group as a whole to himself. Have read that when Mike, about 10 - 15 years ago, started claiming that he helped Paul write Back In The USSR, Paul issued a statement saying that was not correct, but then he left it at that.
@1401minstrel11 ай бұрын

I had the pleasure of seeing Carl perform with the Beach Boys on many occasions. He truly was the star of those 80s/90s concerts. between his vocals and musical prowess, he commanded the stage. Even towards the end of his life, he was a consummate professional. While weakened from chemo and radiation, Carl would petform sitting on a stool. But during the encore, he would rally and carry his heavy Rickenbocker and join the "Beach Boy Shuffle" during Barbara-Ann. Other than the 50th anniversary tour, I haven't been to a Beach Boys show since his passing. Without a Wilson on the stage, especially Carl, it truly isn't a Beach Boy concert.

IMO, Carl never got the credit he deserved as a lead guitarist. For example, his intro and ending on Johnny B Goode in the Beach Boys Concert album 1964... he really gave that Fender Jaguar a workout on that song. I always wondered if he played the guitar instrumentals himself on the Surfin' USA album, or if was a session guitarist. Also, who played the lead guitar solo in the middle break of I Get Around. So Sad he passed away at such a young age.

As talented as he was, he was actually underused and his talent suppressed by staying in the group instead of going solo or joining Dennis to form another band during the 70’s. He was easily the 2nd most important member of the group.

Yes, I used to think he and Dennis should have split off and form a Wilson Bros Band.

David Marks never sung on the Beach Boys song when he was in the band. The other vocal on the Beach Boys cover of Summertime Blues was Nick Venet ( producer for Capitol Records and the person who signed them). Also All Dressed Up for School was not released at the time, and only came out as a bonus track in the late 80's. On a side notes, I'd love to know more about the new age religion Carl subscribed too
