It took me a while, but I finally placed him - William Sylvester was Dr. Heywood Floyd in 2001: A Space Odyssey. What a movie. The house it's filmed in is amazing - beautiful furnishings, a great kitchen, sculpture everywhere, deco lamps, an amazing old TV set. I wonder who was supposed to be keeping all of those beautiful cut flowers [in almost every scene] fresh and nice? Also funny to see them drinking scotch from wine glasses - this is a great movie, thanks for posting!

Yes. Hard liquor in wine glasses. The bottle does not even look as expected. Does not look like it contains dark or amber colored liquid (Scotch) and the shape and labeling makes it look like no scotch bottle ever seen in the real world. And...main characters sound like upper -class folks from England, then they drink COFFEE through the entire story. Into the 1980s, coffee was only minimally popular in the UK. Anyone with any experience of England would expect to see at least one of those breakfasting characters in the process of making tea. Was the director just trying for a weird, off-balance atmosphere? The acting comes across as excellent (in my opinion) and except for being kind of weird, the look of this film is polished. It's not as though they just tossed this together. Weirdness is probably intentional.

Mysterious ... quite a slow pace. We liked it in the end but found this oddity: no clues as to location. Are we in UK? US? Accents from all over, no city references. Interior style looks like ... esoteric as in, can't place it. A smattering of very old architecture and woodwork, etc, but not much. 1950's furniture here and there. A bit like someone said, "Let's make a movie! We have some costumes in the attic! etc." All the same, thanks for posting!

An English/UK 1940s Police car. Also driver drove on left road side. Early on the milk bottle taken from the fridge is a typical English Pint bottle. (I have no idea what a USA pint bottle looked likes but I know my English pint bottles). No screw top as bottles were returned then refilled with thin foil used to seal. It also looks too big to be a USA pint bottle as the USA pint is only 16 ozs where as the English pint is 20ozs.

*WHY* studios are compelled to "colorize" movies resulting in a level of film quality that falls BELOW the original "impact" of the original B&W director's intent is beyond my understanding. 🤪The colorization process essentially LOSES ALL of the requisite "elements" of _"Noir"_ itself.😮 _NONETHELESS...._ a wonderfully suspenseful plot pushed along by "unique" Paulette Goddard and the equally complex role of William Sylvester. The dialogue between the police investigators is CLASSIC 1950s.... Or at minimum, Definitively English.... Albeit with a Great Ending!!!! 🤣
@elmagodelmaryahoo Жыл бұрын
And _"the dark worldview"_ IS famously represented in The True Noir style by high-contrast "expressively moody" shadows, and scene lighting used as a means to visually convey the pending danger, which THIS *_original_* Director's B&W version most certainly employs *_and_* portrays..... Though largely Lost in THIS colorization process.... as described above. "Different Strokes"!!!! 🤣

It was sad seeing Cecil B. DeMille's favorite actress in an unworthy film like this. Her contemporary, Susan Hayward, by contrast had already received 3 Oscar nominations at this point in time. In the '40s when they co-starred together, Paulette always received top billing. And we know Susan (as Edythe Marrenner) was poo-pooed during her Scarlett O'Hara screentest, while Paulette became the frontrunner for the role.

I didn't find it sad, although I agree it was definitely, unworthy of her talents. Paulette still stood out so I could understand how all the men were in her orbit. She looked stunning in the black evening dress. I was impressed by her acting culminating in her affectionate mannerisms in the taxi. In fact, the acting all round was good just let down by the script.

Thank you VTMCompant for your comments. Four or five times while watching this mediocre movie I wanted to turn it off, but I persevered. The dialogue was eminently clumsy, the action was awkward in that I was never sure where everyone was, and the characters so indistinct in speech and even appearance that I found myself wishing that the chinless police chief would have been one of the brothers. :). As the saying goes, those were minutes that were wasted never to be gained again for productive use. PS And Paulette needed a girdle.

I'll watch a colorized film but the whole time I'm cursing those who messed with an artist's work. It's distracting and everything has that weird pink cast to it. I don't mind b&w at all. I was born in 1957. Son was born in 1979 and he avoided b&w like it was hot lava.

The writing was weak, although the premise of guy returning from mysterious absence was very good. Everyone so nonchalant about harry dying, likewise the ending was even worse. One can say, it’s just a movie. But I assume the novel was much better, otherwise why make a movie from a crappy novel. Also it’s almost a given detective stories should have interesting settings, e.g. Sherlock Holmes, Poirot, etc. Here almost every shot is in the same room and meanwhile there’s not much for dramatic interest. I found the casting about the most interesting part of this film.
@teach-learn4078 Жыл бұрын
@Blue Bee Ha ha, I studied English at university back in the day just before the cultural Marxism and wokeism really took over, i.e. there were still a few honest professors teaching about literature. However I still didn't understand much about character or plot until I wrote a (really bad) play myself, and then took lessons with a dramaturge for about four months and wrote a better play. So now I know enough to know excellent writing when I see it, even though I'm not at that level myself. Cheerio

This film holds a certain fascination for it keeps you guessing. It would have been much better if it were not colorized for the original black and white would add to the drama. The acting and directing are below par. I liked the big old dog but I don't see the purpose, or even any symbolism for him in the film.This is not Goddard's best performance by any stretch of the imagination. See her in 'The Women', 1939 (at this writing it's not available on KZbin) where she gives an excellent performance. I both liked 'The Unholy Four' and thought it a bombed. So go figure.
