Same! Not a barker except for when someone gets too close. I'm pretty amazed how he sorts out good from bad, as there is a lot of traffic in our hallway. Same with my guests, he's just uncomfortable with them at first, but no barking. Everyone say they thought chihuahua's was yapping 24/7, but my guy is proving them wrong.

The longest living breed. Worth adopting. Get less cancer than most dogs. Love to sleep in the sun. Mine sleep for hours. A blessing and they say lots a sleep promotes longevity.

Yup, rescued an 8 year old one, and despite bad breeding, he's still going strong at 15, no problems besides his deformed ankle bones. Happily sleeps most of the time, as long as he has blankets to burrow under, which is nice. 😅 I have 10 beds by now, one for each room, bed, couch, bathroom, and on chairs I pull up next to my chair so he doesn't get sad about being unable to be in my lap. If he could live in my arms I think he would lol.

Never ignore your Chihuahua. We learnt a very hard lesson. I live on the 1st Fl of an Appartment Block. "Brown", my Chihuahua was barking pretty much non-stop, running up to me, then running up to my flat mate, then running up to all the back windows. We were very tired so pretty much ignored "Brown", telling him to shut up. This went on i think for 1 1/2 Hrs, I think between 1am & 2.30am. I use the words "think", as we were tired. The times is pretty close, could be out by 30m to 1h. The duration is close as well but could of been up to 2Hrs. The next morning my Flatmate went to ride his bike that was chained up out the back on Private Property. It was gone, all that was left was the very very thick chain that was crudely cut in 2. My Flatmates bike he had only bought 2 Weeks earlier for Aus$2,000. It was only a Year old when he bought it 2nd hand. Brand new the Bike was worth $4,500. Apparently it took the thieves 1 1/2 Hrs to cut through the thick chain. Brown tried to tell us, we ignored him, mainly my Flatmate, because interesting enough my flatmate Kirk was "Brown's" main focus. Brown knew exactly what was happening, exactly what was been stolen & that it belonged to Kirk. We were both apologetic to "Brown", when we realised. Very expensive lesson for my Flatmate to learn. If he or me paid attention to Brown he'd still have his Bike. Brown has stopped many other Crimes from happening, including many of my Neighbours Cars been broken into.

Really wish this had included education on people who breed runts together or inbreed to get "teacup" chihuahuas (which do not exist. that is not a breed term. It is an ill bred dog with essentially doggy dwarfism and all related health issues). My rescue baby came from a mill that only bred runts or sickly chis, and if the dog was "too big" they would inbreed it. As a result, my little one has an extremely large "soft spot" making her vulnerable to head trauma, she is plagued by seizures, and has recently had all of her teeth removed due to a jaw deformity causing constant infections. Do not buy teacups, do not support that industry. Chihuahuas are small enough as it is, they do not need to be sickly 2.7 lb runts to be good pets!

Lady Kiri I have a chihuahua x pomeranian and she is the gentlest most placid and loving girl and she is smart. I have done more than basic training with her, she responds to just hand signals and I have even trained her not to bark as I don't need a guard dog. She is my best friend.

Don't think people socialise them enough? I'm just starting to research this type of dog I think thier so cute and have such fun personalities I'm not sure I'd be comfortable with the continues barking. I mean I'd probably be just fine but worried about how my neighbors were feeling. ANYONE HAVE SOME ADVISE?

Even if you socialize them as much as possible, even if they adore every person they meet, they are going to bark a lot anyway. That's just how they are. If you don't want a noisy dog don't get a chihuahua, there are other breeds that are less obnoxious. They're great dogs but the noise is something that's hard to prevent.

Kim I thought that was the case. It's not not I don't adore this breed and it really not want my neighbors knocking on my door to complain. When I worked at PetCo I saw way to many customers that didn't research there pets. THANK YOU FOR YOUR REPLY.

You can train any dog not to bark. I have been rescuing Chihuahuas for nearly 25 years. So long as you are able to train them early, you can train them not to bark. Mine puts her paw on my feet to alert me, and sometimes accompanies with a low "ooof' sound we call her "inside voice" that can't even be heard a room away. Chihuahuas are among the smartest breeds, and they LOVE to please. Unless you are a complete idiot and use negative reinforcements with them, they can be trained to do nearly anything.

I have two chihuahuas currently. Nothing escapes them. They know who is at the door before we do. If it's friendly, they bark once or twice and go up to the door wagging tails. If it's unfamiliar, they bark relentlessly and get in a low head position. Perfect alarms. Plus, they keep me warm in the winter. I never wanted chihuahuas. Never. I thought they were too small and useless, little ankle biters. Until I picked one up off the street. She's been with me for 11 years. We then got another big breed from a junkyard, a golden short hair dog, probably half pit and half german shepherd or labrador. They were best friends. Then my mom got another chi. We had a very loyal pack that was always ready to protect. Honestly, dogs are such characters. They each have their own personality. You can tell who was the princess, who was the knight, and who was the joker. I loved sleeping with all of them. Had trouble sleeping if they weren't all with me.

I was lucky to be a mama to a Chihuahua for 15 years. I miss him like I miss air, sometimes I can't catch my breath when I think of him. He was the best security system ever, & then my Mastiff was the muscle. Now I have another little dog but I'm not sure what his breed is, but he's cool, my new baby.

My chihuahua only barks when someone comes to my door. She sleeps in a crate since that’s how I potty trained her as a baby. She perfectly well allowed to sleep with me if she wants but she loves her bed (which consists of a dog bed pillow, several blankets and a few soft toys as well as a blanket that gets hung over the crate to keep it dark) and will actually cry to go to bed when she’s tired lol. She definitely loves toys as I’ve noticed most chihuahuas do and has a huge bin of them.

I love them . Their soo cute and loving. I have a boy named max.he is a long haired Chihuahua, white with three little fawn spots.i got him when he was four months old and now he's seven pounds. He is going to be ten this February. I dont know what I would do without him. He has helped me trough my tough time s .i had cancer then radiation then four years latter cancer grew back and I had to have it taken out.he always stayed by my side giving me kisses. I dont know what I'd do without him.i think of him as if he were my son.i love my max!

My Chi named Ben is very smart. Since my family adopted him we've never trained, never stayed up because of him. Everyday when my mom give money to someone, he stands near mom's table and bite him but not really serious. My chihuahua won’t start barking unless my Pomeranian alerts the rest of my dogs. My Pomeranian is basically my families alarm system 😂. If someone is at our door or she recognizes someone outside she’ll bark like crazy. But when they come in she’s a sweetheart to everyone. My Chihuahua is like cautious of people but he gets used to them and sits with them or lays down near them.
