Gifted with extraordinary skating flexibility as well as an artistic talent of incredible beauty, american figure skater David Shapiro saw his future tumbled after having undergone a surgical procedure which forced him to withdraw from figure skating competitions while he was about to move from Junior figure skater to Senior.
It was in 2020, since then he has perfected his gift, and his rare appearances in ice skating shows represent a unique moment of poignant intensity as he expresses himself in a profound, almost painful way, to tear your heart out... His slender body with long legs unfolds in a sequence of movements with a grace reminiscent of classical ballet dance, which he also cultivates while continuing to train, having given up on triple jumping, which his post-operative rehabilitation did not allow him to continue to practice consistently for competitions.
But perhaps his contrary destiny has a meaning, for the moment we can say that adversity has led him towards the search for artistic perfection which he seems to pursue as a new objective, becoming a kind of brillant ballet dancer on ice, or a balletic figure skater, despite his doubts which he expresses in his publications of Instagram.
He does not have a KZbin channel and the visual material on this platform is very limited.
You can however follow him by subscribing to his Instagram account, and I would like you to support him and share his publications as well as this video to help make him better known.
His skating and his story touched me deeply, I hope that his work and his talent will one day be rewarded as he deserves.

David is the most passionate graceful male skater I've ever seen. How tragic he's unable to perform the jumps required to compete. His use of ballet in his skating is just astounding. The world is worse off for the ever increasing demands for crazier & crazier jumps. Gone are the wonderful days where beauty, grace & emotion were paramount.

This is the story of David Shapiro who had all the potential to become a great competitive figure skater, blessed with rare artistic talent as well as extraordinary flexibility. But fate decided his future in a different way, and as a result of injuries he had to undergo surgery from which he could not fully recover, at least as far as jumping was concerned. However, thanks to his passion for figure skating and ballet, he became a kind of ballet figure skater, occasionally performing spectacular performances in which he expressed intense emotions with his entire body (including his face) incredibly supple and loose. .It is a feast for the eyes and the soul. So if you like David, share and like this video, not to help my channel, but to help David be known and recognized as the great ice skater artist that he is. Thanks for him.

@@aquastar7990 I agree. FS is more of an art than a sport, and current developments are not going in a favorable direction for this discipline. For example, I have seen among the juniors and some seniors skaters who do the jumps correctly and other basic elements like the camel spin horribly executed, some even fall while doing the spins or lose their balance, the step sequences are sluggish and unconvincing, stiff arms and rigid upper body... these are the consequences of giving priority to jumps, and juniors who have less endurance have difficulty holding on until the end because there are 10 jumps in a free program, It's too much and the poor people in the end lose points because they almost can't do it anymore.

This was artistically STUNNING. It is almost a forgotten element among most of the quad-jumping studs today. Jason Brown has had a good idea on executing an artistic program that scored every bit as much as the physical program. David, in my opinion, has Brown beat in this category. I hope he can get his jumps back because with this creativity on ice, he could become almost unbeatable. Good luck, David...I am a fan.

It certainly was. I'm not sure if the jump-fest that is figure skating today actually deserves this kind of artistry - maybe it needs its own genre? How sad for this young man, and for all of us too, to have a wonderful future ended before it ever really got started - and I have no doubt it would have been truly wonderful.

Amazing talent! What an artist on ice he is. The ballet training is obvious. I think someone should try to steer David Shapiro into practicing figures so he can compete in the World Figure and Fancy Skating championships, held every year in the Fall, in Lake Placid! Blade skills and artistry are at the forefront at that competition, not jumps!

@luminiferous1960
@luminiferous1960 6 ай бұрын
@@lydwinaofschiedam2685 If you think you're "old school" in comparing him to Sasha Cohen, then I am "ancient academy" since he reminds me of Toller Cranston and John Curry from the 1970s. John Curry was noted for combining ballet and modern dance influences into his skating. As an amateur competitor, Curry was noted for his ballet-like posture and extension, and his superb body control. Following the 1976 World Championships, Curry turned professional and founded a touring skating company along the same lines as a traditional dance company. Besides choreographing routines for the company, Curry commissioned works from such noted dance choreographers as Sir Kenneth MacMillan, Peter Martins and Twyla Tharp. Along with Canadian skater Toller Cranston, Curry was responsible for bringing the artistic and presentation aspects of men's figure skating to a new level. When Toller Cranston was 13, he developed Osgood-Schlatter disease and was initially told that he would never skate again. After eight weeks in a cast, he resumed training, and won the 1964 Canadian Junior Championship the next month. Cranston often came in first in his free skating programs, but his low placements in compulsory figures limited his overall scores and placements. He quickly gained a reputation as the most innovative and exciting artistic skater of his time, one of the first to emphasize use of the whole body to express the music as well as to execute skating moves in best form, to lie down while sliding down the ice and to wear elaborate costumes. Even during his competitive career, Cranston had talked about his goal in skating being to create what he called "theatre on ice", or skating as a form of dance expression, rather than winning medals. He explained that the purpose of perfecting the technical aspects of the sport was to allow the body to express the music or emotion. Unlike David Shapiro, Cranston and Curry executed their jumps very well during the heights of their careers. It is understandable why Shapiro cannot perform the multi-revolution jumps. This should not hold back recognition and celebration of the artistry of his ice skating.

@@luminiferous1960 I'll join your "ancient academy". He reminded me immediately of John Curry and, also, because of his height and elegance, Robin Cousins whose professional performances are so much more beautiful than his amateur ones. Sad to say, although I remember Toller Cranston I can't recall his performances, so will have to look him up on here.

My first thought was also John Curry who wanted to do ballet but I believe his father wouldn't allow it so he did ballet but on ice which was acceptable! It is true, I think, that young dancers are now expected to pull off feats in the air that older dancers would have regarded as undesirable, dangerous and not balletic. This boy has such grace and presence that he will be a joy to watch without these tricks "en l'air ".

This reminds me of seeing Toller Cranston's spiral for the first time when I was a child in the 70s. Such open hips and a strong back. I met him many times in NYC and he was always such fun, so witty, kind, and always with great stories. I had to stop skating due to fibromyalgia and chronic pain. Who says you have to make all kinds of dangerous jumps to be a Beautiful skater like he is? If he can see past his disappointment and skate for the immense Joy he obviously feels it will show in his performances and the audiences will be in total awe of his ability! Many Blessings, Light and Love ⭐💖🙏

It is so admirable, his passion for skating. Not letting his injuries keep him from doing what he loves, but embracing his limitations and embarking on a different and exciting way to express himself while still skating. It takes courage to continue on as he has. I hope that if put in a similar situation I would have that same courage and determination.

@@artisticskatingpassion7425 Oh 🥹😍! The same happens with artistic swimming (fka syncronized). And with gymnastics too. Man-Woman Artistic Gymnastics is called Sportive Gym. Rhythmic is called Artistic gym (plus Acrobatics and Aesthetic). As a ballet dancer, it makes total sense to consider FS, RG and SS as *ART* manifested in a sportive discipline 🧛🏻‍♀️🖤

so so gracious and beauty-full. Ive never seen a more elegant skateman moving on ice. I would say to him that sometimes life has other plans for us and we will be stopped on our path so we can shift into what was truly designed for us. Maybe this adjustment will lead him onto a more rewarding career that his soul wanted to explore through him.

I completely agree! The beauty of skating has been lost to the need for way too may jumps. This kind of artistic talent is so beautiful to watch without having to watch so many painful falls and for what reasons? I truly believe those of us who have loved watching figure skating over the past many years, the skills portion of the competition used to center the first set of scores on a specific set of patterns traced on the ice by the skater’s blades. perfect 10’s would have been given to this God gifted young man! For David, skating for an appreciative audience is where the best reward will be for sure!

David is poetry in motion. I found him through Dai Takahashi, who discovered him on social media and invited him to perform in his self-produced show Ice Explosion in May this year. He was part of the group number What a wonderful world, including a duet with Dai, and got to perform solo as well. There’s a short rehearsal clip and interview with David on the Ice Explosion ig account (youtube doesn’t let me post the link). I heard many Japanese fans attending the shows fell in love with him. I think up until that point, David was pretty well known in US figure skating circles, but not internationally. It's wonderful of Dai to give such high profile opportunities to lesser known skaters. I hope David receives more overseas show invitations as he absolutely deserves to be seen by as many people as possible.

@@artisticskatingpassion7425 Yes, it's a real shame that only the show in Yokohama with a different cast was filmed in its entirety for tv. The only official film material from Fukuoka is part of the documentary Daisuke Takahashi Last Dance of Age 37, but there’s only very little rehearsal footage of the duet. You can find the documentary on daily motion, if you’re interested.
