This entire trilogy is one big passion project, but also a technical feat on Robert Rodriguez's part. El Mariachi released in 1992 and all he had, through the means of being a voluntary human puppet, was 7,000 dollars (Roughly 15,000 in todays US currency) to produce it, having done it in 14 days and releasing it originally at the Toronto International Film Festival and Sundance. If you read what he did to make the film feasible, it's astounding. From filiming it silent and going to post production to include the audio to keeping several bloopers into it to boot. The man is akin to the earliest hits of George Miller in Mad Max (I.E.: Guerilla filming, using his own stuff for props and set pieces like his old Mazda van) Desperado was a result of his first films massive success, so getting Antonio Banderas coming in to replace Carlos Gallardo (OG Mariachi) was a deliberate feat to sell the movie to a mainstream audience, it also helped he went to a budget that was a thousand times the amount he did (7,000 USD to 7,000,000 USD). This was also Salma Hayek's breakout role and what solidified her status in the industry, as well as becoming an on-off Rodriguez regular next to Banderas. Even Once Upon A Time in Mexico is a technical feat, besides George Lucas and a handful of others, he was one of the first to take in the HD revolution that was occuring in the early-to-mid 2000s, which you can tell by the way the frame seems really smooth, especially in the scene with Sands shooting the cook. This was also a culmination of all 3 films' plots into one consistent film if you think about it, but with an emphasis on making Mexico look beautiful rather than the yellow filter sh!t we get these days to emphasize Mexico in a scene. Without these 3 films, Rodriguez wouldn't have been able to have his career to do things like Planet Terror and Sin City. Wish he got more work, he's got some serious talent

"It is easier to pull a trigger, than to play a guitar. It is easier to destroy, than to create". This movie is full of banger after banger of dialogue. I became obsessed with Desperado when I was like 11 or 12. I had a VHS in the VCR and recorded it one day that it came on the USA Network. I paused the record during the commercial breaks so it was the straight up movie. And then later on I saw the unedited version when I bought the DVD. So much lore about this movie. The fact it was shot so quickly. Raul Julia was supposed to play Bucho before he passed away. The fact that Robert Rodriquez and Danny Trejo found out theyre second cousins filming this. The fact that most of the henchmen get reused at some point in the movie so you see them die multiple times lol. This movie is a testament to how much can get done with very little time and budget, relative to what typical big time Hollywood studio greenly movies get.

Orale! Thanks for reviewing this movie. It gets slept on way more than it should. I was so proud of Robert Rodriguez, he was Mexican director on par with Quentin Tarantino. This trilogy, his portion of “Four Rooms”, and “From Dusk Till Dawn” were badass!! Of course the list goes on “Spy Kids” movies and Sharkboy, etc… But those first ones I mentioned were fired out of a cannon. Plus Salma Hayek is a Goddess!!

Dude ....I know I've said it before...but Mexican cinema already has an amazing superhero...and that is El Santo. Now. Those movies....for the most part....are COVERED in cheese. That being said, if not for El Santo, Mexican action cinema wouldn't be as exciting as it is today. Do yourself an awesome favor and at least check out SOME of El Santo's early films, or even his "best of", and you will definitely enjoy it. But you are right. Desperado is one Helluva ride. One final.note. .....my mom came back from Mexico and bought me a blanket. I used it on my guest bedroom queen size for the longest since not many people stayed in there, and it was such an amazing looking blanket (hand crafted). Well, I don't know how, but after watching El Mariachi for the 30fh time, I discovered a scene to where he is on the bed with a woman, and the camera lingers on a shot showing the exact same blanket....pattern, make, and all. Was it the same one? Probably not. But I'd like to think I had a piece of cinema history in my guest room, hahaha. Damn, that trilogy is SOOO good. For.real.tho. Try to give the Luchador and Mexican horror films a shot. They do have an amazing history and are integral to the history of Mexican cinema. Plus, they were just so much more bonkers than some of their European influences at times. As always....awesome channel, my friend. Love any sort of content on cinema from any country or culture. I only own the Rugers because of the nostalgia of Desperado, I watched that movie so many times growing up its just one of those movies that will stick with me till I'm in the dirt. Desperado was also my inspiration for learning to play the guitar, my mom loved the intro song "Cancion Del Mariachi" so I wanted to learn it and now over 27 years later I can play that song for her any many more, all thanks to this over the top awesome movie lol.

I’ll say I love this movie , it’s a staple of my childhood. I don’t want to be that guy but Antonio Banderas is not Mexican or Latino for that matter and really should have had someone else but money talks. People would pay more to see Banderas over some other Mexican actor at the time. On the other hand though El Mariachi is a bad ass character and Banderas played him with lots gusto. Rodriguez made a fun film Call blue beetle cringe or what you will at least it made an attempt to create a Latino film about a Chicano character with actual Latino actors. I will admit though doesn’t necessarily guarantee it will be a well made film or well accepted. I will say for those that are unhappy that there are not enough good representations of Mexicans in cinema, if you think you could do better produce your own film or story. There are people out there that are willing to create it , I guarantee you that. Salud, thanks for the film review.

When I was a little kid I saw this movie in theaters for my birthday twice! It literally changed my life when it comes to taste in movies. Damn near 30 years later and I’ve seen this movie like a couple hundred times and it still gets me going every time! This was my introduction to Danny Trejo and I thought he was both the coolest and ugliest dude (would th the most badass tattoo) I had ever seen. I haven’t seen this movie in the past 5 years or so but now I’m literally going to watch it tomorrow. Thanks for covering it

I was going to give your review an eight out of 10, but then, your last half of the review talking papas on the ending caused me to give you a 7 out of 10. In the climax battle our hero literally loses his two buddies that come to help him. They were real costs to that awesome action sequence. I absolutely love this movie and consider its a Mexican superhero movie classic.

Desperado is one of the best Mexican based movies ever made in my opinion, it had a lot of good actors in it, it had great Gun-Fu, and the story/lore is awesome. It’s one of my favorite stories in an action movie because it had a great main character that had a lot of mystery to him, and he is such a great antihero in all of action cinema. I also loved Once upon a time in Mexico too because it continued the Matiachi’s story too.

I'm just some white guy, and I agree that the Desperado or Mexico Trilogy is pure awesome. El Mariachi wasn't bad at all and I believe underrated as a movie can be. Desperado, well you said it all. Once Upon a time in Mexico is the best night cap you could give this particular Trilogy, yes it is over the top and pretty cheesy however.... what else do you do with all the escalation of these films? Love the cast as well in the 2nd and 3rd film. I believe the cast is changed and reused/repurposed due to either actors not being available or just because the budget for the films increased. Great video.
