I'm the "one woman bought two houses" mentioned. It's actually two women. Myself and my business partner. We have a long way to go before they're habitable. The plan is for me to eventually live in one house and rent out the other. We're thrilled to have a Betsy as our neighbor.

@shutupshelley1793

I disagree. To me, her mix of traditional and modern is absolutely not seamless and, in fact, isn't at all complimentary to the home's origin. If I were ever to buy that house from her after her renovation, the first thing I would do would be to replace all those awful, modern light fixtures that seem to be flipping off the stately integrity of that marvelous old home. They're so laughably wrong for this home and stick out so like a sore thumb that they distract from the original interior architecture instead of sticking to their purpose of sophisticated illumination of it. Next I would dim down that aggressively yellow paint color in the entryway and then I would merrily tear down that comically horrible wallpaper in the kitchen. (There are absolutely COUNTLESS* wallpaper designs out there... and she chose *THAT*?? 🙄 Wow.) And while I love the dining table, the chairs...oy! The chairs... again distracting from the rest of the room and simply not auspicious in any sense. Naturally, that's just my opinion, of course, although I'll note I'm well-schooled in art and design, not that that will matter to anyone, but maybe it should.😉 Obviously, we all have our different preferences and sense of what looks good, I'm just a true believer in celebrating and respecting the history and architecture of an older home by reflecting that more than less in its interior design. The End 🤗

I'm so relieved at the direction Betsy took with the interior design--dark coloured trim, vintage furniture, going for maximalist wallpapers, preserving the old layers of wallpaper. Fun little piece of minutiae: when Betsy was talking about how hard it was to deal with the tin ceiling panels in the kitchen, she didn’t mention that Wheeling, W.V. was actually home to the largest manufacturer of tin ceiling panels in the US in the late 1800s, roundabout when the building boom of this kind of home was getting underway. So there’s a really good chance that the original installer would have been able to go get the panels at the local distributor hot off the press right there in their hometown.

Saw it on Zillow last year; all interiors had been gutted in favor of modernist white and gray. They absolutely destroyed all life the house had. One can only hope future owners will realize what was done and bring back a bit of the Victorian feel.

I love seeing the unique ways that people find to integrate/highlight original features when restoring or renovating old homes like this that are just bursting with rich history, special details and charm. When you've got a big hall and stairway you CAN paint things bright yellow and it doesn't look like its taking over. I absolutely love how she renovated and restored the house. This is how all people who buy old homes should treat them. Finally an old house that is restored and has character, history, tells a story, etc.

What a beautiful home. She has done a lot of work so far! What a gem! Wheeling is definitely an up and coming city once again. Lots of older historic buildings. You can’t replace these!! I live very close to wheeling and appreciate this video. Thank you for sharing! Best of luck in her renovations to this beautiful house!

I am absolutely obsessed with how Betsy renovated her home but didn't erase the historic features. Most people would create a modern kitchen, but Betsy really made a beautiful, functional kitchen that retains the vintage charm of the home. VERY well done.

Great video, Monica! What really amazes me about this project is how much she got done for ~$155K. Looking forward to your Wheeling video.

I love Wheeling! My cousin is a broker in Jersey City and she fell in love with Wheeling back in the mid 2000s. She bought an old (and almost certainly haunted) house on Market St, right across from the market. I've been watching that house ever since she sold it hoping it comes back on the market! My aunt still lives in Wheeling, and I've been wanting to go back to visit ever since that trip in 2007.

Love this home. Being renovated beautifully and furnished to live in with style. Some people get caught up with the period and end up living in a museum. Nice to see people in the US starting to appreciate their older homes as you have some gems well worth preserving. In the UK older homes are appreciated and often sell for more than their newer counterparts. Hopefully this trend will start in the US as it would be such a shame to tear down any more architectural gems.
