Tunnelling in Greece dates back at least to 2000 B.C. when many tunnels were excavated for the exploitation of the minerals of Lavrion and Sifnos and Thassos Islands. Innovative methods of tunnelling were applied for the construction of many other tunnels of the prehistoric, classical, hellinistic and roman era.

Limestone is a popular building material for its versatility and durability. It’s moldable and used for flooring, cladding, fireplaces, steps, and columns. Plus, it’s resistant to weathering and erosion. Ancient buildings made of limestone still stand today! Limestone is also fire-resistant and can withstand insect damage.

Comprised of calcium carbonate, limestone can stand up to weathering and erosion, remaining strong and stable over hundreds of years. With minimal maintenance required, versatility in types and applications.
whenever it rains the catacombs actually gets really flooded very very fast. Meaning the water can sometimes even go up to waist-length during this downtime. When this happens, explorers are encouraged to run as fast as they can to the nearest exit ladder to safety, however because the Catacombs is practically a maze this is a bit of a challenge

Night terrors? When I was a child of 3 or 4 there was a hollow log in the forest outside my bedroom window. My brother and sister told me that bears lived there. I had nightmares for decades about the "bear log". I also watched too many Godzilla and scary dinosaur movies when I was young. Late at night when alone and I hear strange sounds, I still for a moment imagine dinosaurs are outside, looking for people to eat. Too much imagination, right?

It was alleged 1993… but no one is sure. Remember that it was in 1999 that the Blair Witch Project came out. A lot of amateur film makers tried to copy that style of filming. And was that camcorder actually sitting there in a wet environment for many years without the film being destroyed by the conditions or picked up right afterwards just in time to be part of a Show? Again a time when the “ Paranormal reality “ tv shows very popular.

I've visited the Paris Catacombs. Only the part that you can visit and tour legally, of course. Walking through underground tunnels that are lined with skulls and bones is an experience. It was actually somewhat overwhelming when I stopped to think about it. This wasn't some Halloween display but actual human remains. Not something that one sees every day. Definitely a worthwhile thing to visit in Paris.

Small add on the Catacombs, Catacombs were used mostly as refuge or as a religious place, many were built during the persecutions of Christians. Some Catacombs are still visitable and well maintained, but many times, a lot is uncharted or extremely sparsly uncovered. So it's extremely dangerous, and many times happened to people to simply get lost. And it's mainly for that reason that people aren't allowed. Many times for preservation and archeological reasons. And some are considered holy places, so are limited. There are still a lot of subterranean catacombs and "cities", that get uncovered pretty often. There are some that were used until recently and some still to this day. One good example, are the galleries in Naples, used even in WW2. Just a small add-on, great video as always compaensano!

I went to a rave down there back in 1996. I have no idea how long it took them to get the generators, lights and so on down there; I was told they actually moved all that stuff around from time to time, to avoid the patrols. They also threw the raves on different levels. When I went, it was two levels down and the chambers were a mix of bones and skulls, and bare stone walls with wonderfully old stairs. There are a LOT of stories about people who live down there, including a small tribe of cannibals descended from people who were around during or before the Roman times. Wandering around down there was interesting, but after a while I got a bit claustrophobic and really wanted out of there.

There are people spending lots of leisure time down there, they are called the Cataphiles. They don't like outsiders to explore the tunnels, unless these outsiders came with a cataphile guide. They even built a movie theatre underground (and illegaly tapping electricity from a public building above) Also keep in mind that the ossuarium is only a part of the tunnel system. The entrance of the unofficial labyrinth can be a sewer lid, a disused train tunnel, or an abandonned building.

I’ve been to catacombs. They don’t bother me. I like that when they had to dig up and relocate the bones of the dead they respected them enough to make the “walls” neatly, even creating patterns. Behind the walls might simply be a mixed pile but at least what visitors saw that care was taken.

Here’s a question given the timeline, is there any reports from police that they were chasing a suspect and lost this person? If there are constant patrols, and I know of stories of people going down there as a secret hang out spots, could be possible that the person got spooked due to the nature of the area, and the police either couldn’t keep up with the person, or also took a wrong turn and the steps are just echoing throughout the catacombs. As a side note, a police bust did happen in 2004 where an entire cinema was founded. Found in an uncharted area of the tombs.

Vampires. It's obvious. Right from the start it was some Parisian vampires (or maybe one really powerful and influential one) orchestrated the move of the deceased into the catacombs as a way to tidy them up so they could move around the city during the day! Or maybe I just like vampires a lot? I can never decide if I want such things to be true or not...cool, but terrifying, or good old fashioned boring, but safe, disappointment. It's fun to think about it, though. Man, I want that video game! Why can't we have a vampire RPG as good as the classic Bloodlines but set in Paris (and not "for modern audiences")?

(IIRC, Mike said the video was revealed in 2000, which is right after Blair Witch Project was released and spawned an entire generation of “found footage” dupes). If it’s not, a dude dropping his only source of light down there seems like extreme panic…which could be the result of a physiological or psychological stressors rather than some paranormal or malicious catalyst.

But the feeling itself when you are lost somewhere underground, where you can meet any other psycho. That holds Crowbar or a Knife and you know that you can get killed and won't get found and in the end you will be declared just missing. I do not know how you feel, but I feel uneasy when Im somewhere out in a wild very far from civilization and meet some other person.

Hey, most noble one! Please consider doing a follow-up exploring the Catacombs of Rome. They're probably not so scary as the ones in Paris, but the History there is so rich I can only imagine!!!

National Geographic once published a large and comprehensive article about the catacombs of Paris, their origin and history, and how they also cause difficulties for the future of Paris due to the risk of collapse. I still own that 2011 issue of the magazine and I have it stored somewhere. But the way how the catacombs have been digged in several stages for different purposes and used for new purposes when situations change is interesting.

I entered the illegal catacombs network back in 2006, I was 18. We went in via an abandoned railway line on the edge of Paris. At that time I wasn't afraid of much but I must admit that it was creepy af. Funilly enough, I've never been in the paid catacombs (Denfert-Rochereau neighborhood).

I've had an obsessioln with the Catacombs for so long, and too bad I've never had any other real desire to go to Paris, lol. I did get the chance to visit a Necropolis in Roman, and loved it.

I've visited the catacombs (legally, the guided tour). It's interesting and kinda creepy. There is no semblance of logic or order to the place. They just put a huge pile of skulls in this room because reasons, and got fancy with it because they got bored. I don't have any pictures, because IIRC you're or allows to take pictures oitnod respect for the dead.

Cooking limestone is a source of white pigment for plastered walls necessary for those frescoes you see everywhere and for making concrete. Even poor quality limestone is good for both of those uses. Chalk provides better quality and quantity, but limestone is easier to break down because of the porous nature of it. Making quicklime is as easy as dumping limestone gravel into boiling water and waiting.

I appreciate the daily uploads, even though my schedule prevents me from watching all of it, but please be careful to not let quality slip (such as the accidentally left-in music stinger during quiet talking at 14:54). That said, loving the content mate :)

Weather not only can affect the water levels it can also affect the quality of the air. When caving or doing a catacomb crawl you need to be aware of methane build up and oxygen deprivation. Changes in air quality, silence, isolation, the absence of light, and the mind itself can all play tricks on a person underground. If the video was not a hoax that person probably died an awful, slow, death.

I'm a sucker for this concept of "civilizations built on top of another." Like in Dark Souls, how Lordran is built on a swamp and ancient demon ruins, or Forgotten City going from Greek to Egyptian to Sumerian. So likewise, when this happens in real life to any degree, it's fascinating!

Oh man I really liked this video. I love scary stuff and especially the internet scary stuff and the Paris catacombs video is so famous. Even if I think it is probably a hoax, it is still fascinating. I remember when the Backroom craze started on YT there was also a content creator that tried to spin the genre towards the Paris catacombs and it's a shame it never truly took off. Also, to learn more of this place from a historical point of view was also very pleasing. It reminded me of the catacombs in Rome, which are very near to where I live actually and some tunnels are still unexplored and unmapped and some entrances to those tunnels were opened by WW2 bombs and nowadays there is kind of a fence to keep people out but some people I know went in there for a while. I hope that, with October coming, we'll see more "horror" themed videos.

Could echoes perhaps have played tricks on the explorer, making him hear footsteps behind him that seemingly kept pace when his own increased? In an already frightened state, when vulnerable and alone in such a place, I believe that would terrify most beyond the safety of reasoning 🤔 Just a thought that struck me 😅

It's all sounds very familiar. My native city of Odessa was originally built out of material, excavated from right beneath the city. Also there a lot of natural caverns. So we have nobody knows how many kilometers of tunnels under the city. People getting lost there on regular basis.

Thank you for this very interesting video, Metatron! I was curious to see the entire video of your source for the footage, and I found something interesting and very easy to overlook at the end of second 32, from it...I watched it slow motion repeatedly. I even managed to take a print screen of it, as well as I could, because it passes by so fast...It's...interesting...

So, when you are reeeeally high strung, then any random ass noise is going to scare you. Once I was out with my cousin alone, at dusk, and someone´s dog growled at us from behind. WE RAN LIKE HELL. It´s quite possible whoever took the footage thought he was alone, in silence, for hours, and then a stone fell or an animal made a noise somewhere behind him and he just fuckin BOOKED it because he thought he was going to die

I think most people wouldn't have had the camera still pointed forward in a sudden panic while running away like that. Hard to say if it's real or not. Interesting stuff nonetheless. Anyway, there's a movie about these catacombs as well, named As Above so Below. Not too bad, but not the greatest of all time either. Worth a watch depending on your standards

Didn't we all learn from Greek myth that whenever you go into a labyrinth you tie a string to your entrypoint so you can always trace your way back? Even if you lose your light you have the string in your hand to follow back. Poor bastard if it's real.

Every city with rich history and/or Christians has to have its own catacombs - Rome had/has hers, Egypt's Alexandria too, then San Genaro in Naples, and many more... surely Paris felt the pressure to keep up. Church of All Saints near Prague goes up and down. I've been to Cappadocia and what a town the early Christians built inside of limestone mountain (hill) going several storeys up, but also 9 storeys down is something to behold - and crawl down to. BTW, @metatronyt - take a look at Catacomb X in Rome... and who's been buried there.
