Thank u. As a teenager in Japan, I had no idea what Plan 9 Channel 7 meant. The band was so undervalued back then and I could barely get information. Look forward to Pt.B.

Vanian wrote These Hands inspired by the 1927 silent horror film classic "The Unknown", by director Tod Browning (Dracula, Freaks) and starring Lon Chaney as "Alonzo the Armless", a carnival knife thrower withouth hands. He does everything with his feet. Worth have a look. And thanks for being a Damned fan.

I bought 'Live at Shepperton" when i was 13 in 1983! Fell in love with it and the band for life! Its true the band has put out alot of mediocre albums(but they DEFINITELY put out some 'all killer no filler' albums aswell!), throughout the years, but the awesome take away from all of this.... (the prolificness& vast catalog of the DAMNED) is that when you wanna hear some great DAMNED music, they have sooo many great cuts to choose from they never get old. ALOT!!!!and its a beautiful thing! peace

Absolutely loved your show on The Damned. I saw them first when I was 16, and just again recently in Melbourne, 30 odd years later. My love for that band is totally reignited and I'm trawling the internet for information on them. Your show is really informative and nuanced - the way you talk about music is so interesting. Please keep going with your series. Cheers to you.

Thanks for the dope, bro, you're an excellent historian. Pity you don't seem to have continued, but I'm only interested in MGE anyway, so all good. That said, I can't find their 'Eloise' with the ending as I remember it -- evidence of a parallel universe, but I do digress 🤣

I was first introduced to the Damned via their appearance on The Young Ones, but while I enjoyed the performance of "Nasty," it didn't really spur me to investigate further. A few months later. MTV ran a memorable Halloween special featuring nothing but eerie or horror-themed videos, and it was there that I first encountered "Plan 9 Channel 7," the song that on the spot turned me into a Damned fan for life. The credit on the video mis-identified the source album as Live at Shepperton, so I bought that, but it was obvious it was the wrong recording. I then picked up the original Best of the Damned, which had the right version of "Plan 9," but it also featured an excellent overview of their early offerings. I then went backwards and bought every damned album up to that point, and I have been on board ever since. Since 1988, I have only missed one of their live appearances here in NYC, and I cannot wait to see them again. If you had enough interest to watch this video and the first installment but have never seen them live, I cannot recommend the experience enough. One of the finest bands to see live, they never disappoint.

I agree about the authorship of 'Love Song'; Captain Sensible has always been a self confessed and unashamed train spotter and it shows in the first verse. 'These Hands' would make a perfect background track to any TV or film adaptation of Batman including the Joker. 'Melody Lee' was also Sensible paying homage to an old British comic strip, 'Melody Lee, a dancer she'll be', in the girls comic Bunty, which was about the gradual mental destruction of an aspiring young ballerina by a sadistic teacher. British comics of the 70s, ya gotta love 'em...I did. Made me the man I am today...😱😂

Loved Pt.'s 1 & 2A. Looking forward to Pt. 2B. Going back to Music For Pleasure, It took a bit for it to grow on me, but the majority of it is Pretty good even though it was rushed. I really like One Way Love it's my favorite, of all the songs on there it's the one where you can tell there's actually 2 Guitars , I like the Slide parts in it & I like the Lyrics HAHAHAHA! Machine Gun Etiquette is a Monster of a Record for sure! Not a bad tune on it & like you my favorite changes depending on what day it is, but I really dig Noise, Noise, Noise. The Captain is way more technically versed, a completely different Guitar player(Musician) than Brian James who is a pretty Damned good player in his own right. The Damned are the best Band of that era hands down & still are! Thank you for posting this!

Great video! Just thought I'd add that Captain wrote the music to Love Song but Rat actually wrote the lyrics as an ode to Captains love of trains and trainstations. Quote from Rat “Love Song is about a railway station. Cos’ I figured if you’re gonna write a love song - and most love songs in the charts are so irrelevant to reality anyway, that you might as well be completely irrelevant and why not write one about a railway station that loves it’s passengers?!”

Also Anti-Pope was written by Captains brother Phil Burns originally for his band The Cowards. Captain has cofirmed that These Hands was "100% Mr Vanian". And interesting to note that Liar was the only song on the album written by Algy.

I have to say, I have been a Damned fanatic from the very start, I own a hot rods cover so there you go now! Anyway, for an American who lives half way round the world I gotta say you may have got a couple of facts slightly wrong but on the whole you have done a Stirling job with the history of the Damned. BRAVO! And yes, Algy was a real asshole in real time.

Oh man. You don't like 'Liar'? The album version isn't a stand out, but please check out the John Peel session version of the song. There's a section after the drum solo when the rest of the band comes back in that is probably the tightest, most raucous, and coolest thing the band ever did musically. Seriously.
