In 1901, Australia passed a set of racialised laws around immigration commonly known as the White Australia Policy. It sought to severely limit the number of non-British immigrants to Australia. In the wake of the Second World War, Chinese and Malay men who had courageously defended Australia during wartime found themselves forcibly deported to Hong Kong and Singapore. Families were ripped apart, causing trauma that lasted generations. The Exiles follows the descendants who battled this discriminatory policy, and reunites one Singapore family after seventy-five years apart from their Australian relatives.

What happened to Mercia and Jacob made me cried. They died too soon that their five young children became orphans. They embodied true love as a couple as well as a family that many of us today can learn from. May they reunite in heaven where no one will separate them again.

I am experiencing similar treatment in NZ since 2016 -2023 perhaps longer if I continue to defy the laws of terminal cancer. I was born in NZ Parents are by birth from immigrants Who isn't an immigrant when not of indigenous heritage - everyone Receive the minimal of medical treatment for a rare cancer Am regularly told to go to an indigenously named hospital for treatment where the population majority is of Pacifica origins simply because I look the part My brother and sons look more northern European and have never experienced such discrimination I have international qualifications and yet spoken to by medical staff in a Kiwi Pigeon language. I gave the twats my business card and told them my fee is in Euro, not Kiwi $. Still in the land of Down under, living a life similar to an antagonist in the DDR. Have been living a life between countries with academic credentials, enjoying IT programming, tourism while being a single parent. Welcome to the places close to the Antarctic occupied by individuals who chose to ignore that the majority of us are children from Europe, Asia, Pacific. However, when you need an organ, you never ask of its origins. Yes, I agree, discrimination stems from fear and deep low self-esteem Today I was in a boutique with garments designed by New Zealanders and from France, the manager told me to go to Kmart as they have garments that will suit me best. I asked her if she sops there, she said no, but you have an odd body shape and look, that's when she stopped. All I could think of was the scenario of Oprah Winfrey simply asking the price of a handbag in Switzerland. I felt so sorry for her ignorance as a person of at least five decades of living on this planet. Tragic! I'm changing this concept of ignorance. What are you doing?

"Who isn't an immigrant when not of indigenous heritage - everyone" Everyone on the planet is a DESCENDANT of migrants including the indigenous. That is, unless your family has never left the place where humans first evolved. But modern immigrants come to get a share of hundreds of million dollars worth of infrastructure and public services that they did not pay for and will never pay for. The first British settlers in Australia did not. They started from scratch. Asians and Africans had plenty of opportunity to settle Australia before the British arrived. After all, they were closer. But they didn't want the effort or the expense. It was only after the British did the hard yards of finding a way to grow wheat in Australia's weirdo, back to front seasons, established a wool industry and, of course, found gold, that Asians decided to horn in on the British effort. The only people who have a right to complain of racism are the descendants of those who built Australia's infrastructure and public services, and the Aborigines. They are the only people who didn't come to help themselves to other peoples' inheritance.

@@Bethany_Wongso12 It is highly unlikely that there was only ever one group of humans who walked into Australia via the land bridge in the north. More likely there were several groups who came to the continent over a period of several centuries. In which case, the 2nd and subsequent arrivals colonized a land that was already occupied. The Aborigines who were living in Australia when the whites showed up were the ultimate winners of millennia of warfare. They or their ancestors gained their occupancy by killing other Aborigines. Houses have to be built and paid for. The Aborigines didn't build the land, and they were not 'kicked out' by the whites. They are still here and are being supported by the whites via many subsidies. Unlike modern migrants, the first British settlers did not sail into a nation equipped with hundreds of millions of dollars worth of infrastructure and public services, to get the benefit of another ethnic group's hard work and investment. They started from scratch. If white Australians are not migrating to Africa and Asia, then why must we take migrants from those continents? Why shouldn't we reserve the fruits of our own labour for other members of our own race and culture? African and Asians had plenty of opportunity to settle and build Australia before the whites arrived. But they weren't interested. Only after the whites had done the hard yards of finding a way to grow crops in Australia's back to front seasons, started a wool industry and found gold, did the rest of the world want to come and cadge off the white man's effort and investment.

@@Bethany_Wongso12 "did the aborigines have that choice of locking their house?" The didn't have houses to lock. All that they built were humpies and a few fish traps. Modern migrants come to take a share of the living standard that white people built. Nobody came to Australia to help themselves to the shelter and stuff that the Aborigines worked hard to pay for. "started kicking out all other humans that didn’t look like them?" When the whites arrived, the only people who didn't look like white people were the Aborigines and they were not "kicked out". In fact, no one was "kicked out". The white Australia policy was an immigration policy. Those few Asians and Muslims already in Australia could stay.

As an eastern European I feel very perplexed watching these historical videos that mention "white this, white that" over and over again(of course it's how it was said in the past also). Because white are considered Eastern Europeans also, since 30 years ago. We've never identified by our race but by our ethnos, yet still we are white non the less. And many people lack the education of race. If we talk race now. I feel it's very important to mention that half of the white race was under slavery, colonization, religious oppression, genocide. For more than 500 years, close to 600, we've been never at peace by external forces. Even other white European(western Europeans) have referred to us as lesser and non white, 30 years ago. I'm amazed at the audacity of Westerners to be naming stuff after a race and selectively exclude part of that said race as if their own. And now we get all the hate we did nothing for, not that modern western white natives have done something bad now, but these generalizations are doing ethnic and cultural erasure of eastern Europeans non the less.

If eastern Europeans wanted to live on the Australian continent, they should have got here first and put in the work and investment to establish a settlement from scratch, as the British did. The British found a way of growing grain in Australia's harsh and weird climate. One of the gaolers started the merino wool industry and later gold was found by white people. Why, exactly, should they give away what they worked hard to build, to foreigners who had contributed nothing. The British were perfectly entitled to reserve the fruits of their labour for people of their own race and culture.

The white Australia policy was only concerned with immigration. We didn't want slavery, which was still legal in many parts of the world that hadn't been British colonies. The Aborigines didn't build the land. Nature built it. So who are you to say who owns it? But nature didn't build the power stations or the weatherproof buildings that are big enough to stand up and walk around in. Nature didn't build the health care or welfare systems. The Aborigines who were living in Australia when the whites arrived were the ultimate winners of millennia of warfare. They or their ancestors gained their occupancy by killing other Aborigines.

Modern migrants come to Australia to share millions of dollars worth of infrastructure and public services that have taken generations of Australian taxpayers to provide. Unlike modern migrants the first British settlers didn't come to get the benefit of another ethnic group's hard work and investment. They started from scratch. They are entitled to have the fruits of their labour go to their own descendants, not taken by strangers from alien cultures on other continents and islands. Australia is not just a piece of land or an economy. It is not a lifeboat. It is a home. Our great grandparents, grandparents and parents worked hard to make our nation home a comfortable place for themselves, their children and their children's children . People in Asia and Africa should invest in their own lands. Not go into other people's homes to get a share of their inheritance. Australians have NO obligation to allow any immigrants at all.
@Ra_vee9132
@Ra_vee9132 Жыл бұрын
In contrast to the previous waves of migrants (ten pound poms etc) the majority of modern migrants will be arriving with a high level of skill, education and training that Australia did not have to pay for during their upbringing. They will bring savings accumulated in their home countries and start paying tax in Australia, which stimulates the economy and supports the Australian infrastructure such as hospitals, schools, roads and the aged care needs of older Australians. So actually through the tax system and by spending their savings here, they will support the ongoing costs of the infrastructure you spoke of in your post. The Australian fertility rate has dropped, the population has aged through living longer than in the past which is why the Australian government sees migrants as essential from an economic standpoint. There is now a much larger class of retired Australians with their ongoing health care needs. This would be a high tax burden on the relatively fewer, younger people of working age who are relied upon to pay the infrastructure costs. It very much Western governments who are driving the demand for migrants, not the other way round where Australia is doing a compassionate favour to today’s migrants with little benefit in return. The economic equation is definitely very much to Australia’s favour. The other choice is for Australians to be happier to pay a higher tax rate and bring in inheritance tax etc like they have in the UK. Any government that is courageous enough to do this will likely get voted out, however. It is why, while migration is also a political hot potato, it is seen as more palatable to asking voters to pay more tax. From an environmental point of view I don’t entirely disagree with your conclusion. I don’t think the government here is investing enough in infrastructure to support the population it is growing through migration. I also feel sorry for the countries who invested in people only to lose them to Australia, especially doctors and nurses.

@@Ra_vee9132 What a load of rubbish. Our recent immigration has been bad for Australia and bad for the home countries of the migrants. And skilled migrants bring their unskilled families who are a massive burden on our infrastructure.
@chriswatson1698
@chriswatson1698 Жыл бұрын
@@Ra_vee9132 Wrong. Migrants will never pay for the infrastructure that they use. They contribute to the need for more infrastructure, that everyone has to pay for, not just the newcomers that make it necessary. The government is giving our country away to foreigners because businesses are financing their election campaigns. Businesses always want cheaper labour and more people to sell stuff to. The area of land around a CBD is fixed. So any increase in population makes every square metre of that land more valuable and more expensive. Supply and demand. Great for those who own urban land, but the younger members of the community must pay more and more for less and less living space. Many politicians have investment properties. They can make a capital gain by bringing in foreigners. You are touting the Population Ponzi scheme: you bring in migrants to make a tax base for the support of the elderly, and then those migrants get old, and you have to bring in even more migrants to look after those migrants, and they get old, so you have to bring in even more... NOT SUSTAINABLE. The dependency ratio is higher in younger populations. A child is two dependents: the child itself and the adult who must supervise it. While children are rarely self-supporting and economically productive, the elderly often are. An ageing population is just a matter of supporting the elderly, instead of babies and their mothers. Women are taxpayers now. "don’t think the government here is investing enough in infrastructure" This is the same as saying that the Australian-born, whose forebears built the country, should be taxed more heavily to pay for infrastructure for the benefit of foreigners. Immigration does not increase the tax receipts that we get from our agriculture and mining sectors. It just means that more people have to share the benefits. Less per person. And GDP per capita has indeed declined, because we have increased the number of capitas. We have had massive skilled migration for the last 12 years or so. Suburbs that were once leafy have been turned into heat sinks. Homelessness has increased. Fewer people own their own homes. More people forced to live in little flats or live far away from employment and services. Wages have stagnated and in real terms, declined. Wildlife habitat has been destroyed and arable land covered over by housing. I call that a drop in living standard. And still we get demands for more skilled labour. We don't have a shortage of doctors, nurses and teachers. What we have is an excess of patients and pupils from other countries who are competing with Australians for the time and attention of the professionals whose training we have paid for.
