Imagine if next year, Gradius VI were to be released for the 40th anniversary. I wouldn’t mind if it had some remade levels like what Gradius 3 did. Or even have Solar Assault type gameplay included. I remember Gradius 3 Arcade using that idea. Gradius 6 plot can see more history of James and David Burton and even Dr Venom and the bacterian.

When I was a kid wayyy back then, my friends and classmates made a big deal about Gradius, Lifeforce, etc etc as must play games. Now in hindsight, I'm surprised at how much we talked about the Gradius series and how much it tapered off, whereas we were pretty consistent with the usual suspects like Mario, Sonic, Mega Man, Castlevania, Streets of Rage, etc. Shooters just didn't land like platformers and beat em ups, I guess.
