The proper equivalency would be Napster being sued by the record industry, as that was the beginning of the end of a proper, functioning music industry. The lawsuit was too little, too late (and suing individual pirates was of no help either). Piracy from Napster, Limewire, and other file sharing sites absolutely destroyed the music industry, making it so that by late winter/early spring of 2004, all the major labels were scrambling to keep their head above water. _MASS_ layoffs happened through the entire industry around the world. Giant global record labels were merging together in a panic to survive and not declare bankruptcy (i.e. Sony Music merged with BMG Music, etc). They all were letting go huge percentages of employees, whilst closing down entire departments. It was an utter and complete implosion of the industry, and they’ve never really come back from it. That’s why music has been 95% trash ever since, and we hear the _SAME_ old music being replayed over and over to death on the radio, with barely any new music being showcased in between.

And it originally did show music videos back then and a lot of those music videos were a success on that channel. It even has an award show all about music videos. Also, the VMAs was a very popular award show back then. It wasn’t as big as the Grammys but it was still a very popular award show and by 2001, a vma became a coveted award so a winning a vma award was significant to a lot of celebrities back then so I think that’s one of the reasons why this was such a big deal!
