Motor Racing was born in England but it had to fight to survive thanks to war, tragedy, and constant setbacks. Until one wealthy British family had enough and brought it back. The Goodwood Festival of Speed is Britain's most popular motoring event, but it wasn't always that way.

There are so many inaccuracies in this it's difficult to know where to start. What I will say is that the description of pre war racing in Britain is completely wrong. Brooklands was obsolete by 1939, in a poor state of repair and WW2 merely hastened the end. In mainland Europe (which doesn't get a mention, Spa, Nordscheife, Pescara, Miglia Mille, Le Mans etc.??) road racing was the dominant form of motor sport which is why Brooklands never hosted a Grand Prix, but Donington Park, which is never mentioned, hosted two 1936 and 1938. Enthusiasm doesn't make up for lack of research!
@killakanzgaming
@killakanzgaming Жыл бұрын
As someone who's visited Brooklands a lot, I wanted to say the bit where he says German bombing destroyed the whole site in WW2 isn't accurate. What was left of the racetrack survived the Blitz. But the damage had already been done since the site was handed over for military aircraft production at the start of the war. Part of the southern bank had been cut through for access roads and the end of the airfield's main runway, while other parts of the track had factories and hangers built over it. Today, most of the backstraight and large parts of the banks at both ends still survive. You can see them on google maps. No chance of a race ever occurring there again though, a housing estate has since been built over "the fork" and the former aircraft factory is still an industrial estate today. The museum at Brooklands is well worth a visit, not just for the cars but also the planes they have on show. They have a Concord on display :)

My personal favourite is Goodwood Breakfast Club. Completely free to turn up, first Sunday of the month there's a different theme (Supercar Sunday, British Classics, American Muscle etc.). Cars are arranged on the track for people to gander at with a vast selection of cars on display. A 250 GTO has been spotted there among other rares such as F40's and P1's. It's sort of a formal car meet on the track for anyone.

Hillclimbing was a very popular form of motorsport in the UK, far more than circuit racing. For many years there were too many hills to list in use, but in 1925 racing on public roads was banned, after an accident at Kop Hill. So we were left with Brooklands and Shelsley Walsh. The MAC had moved to Shelsley before the ban, but as it was a private drive, so were able to continue racing to this day. In 1931 the first park circuit was opened at Donnington, so Brooklands was not the only circuit in the country. Goodwood opened in 1948 (as did Croft), by which time Donnington Park (1931) and Crystal Palace (1927 for bikes and 1937 for cars) were both active. The Brooklands site was hit during the war, but the damage was nowhere near as bad as you make out, aircraft production continued after the bombing, the main damage was inflicted on the Vickers factory.

What a fantastic way to spend some time, watching this video, I see some mistakes (pointed out by others more clued up than me) were made, nothing that cannot be put right in another video, but what a super story. Such a shame that the old Brooklands circuit was not restored, what a place to race that would be now, visited it some years ago and just to walk up that slope is such an experience knowing what once went on there! Thanks for this, very entertaining, well done!

In the 1980s Vickers.BAC were very strict regarding access to the site ostensibly due to their Government Defence and Commercial contracts. About that time when the Brooklands Society was formed with the intent of preserving various buildings associated with the Pre War racing visitors were vetted, entry was limited to the few. Fortunately enough support was forthcoming to make the present museum site a good reflection of its pre war heritage.

17:08 A brief side-note: this isn’t entirely accurate for Goodwood was closed down due to the ever increasing speed of the cars which in turn rendered the track dangerous. The current event focuses on cars that race at low enough speeds that the track is safe. Hence the lack of post 1970 cars at any Revival/MM event.

The thing I know about Goodwood is that is where Bruce McLaren died in 1970 while testing an experimental wing configuration on his CAN AM car. Crashed into the last officials flag bunker station at the track, they were in the process of removing the bunkers because of safety issues. I was a baby at the time lol but I lived where the NZ Grand Prix was held, Ardmore Aerodrome so growing up I followed motor racing because of living so close to where it all happened. We had the NZ Grand Prix until that fazed out and moved to a race track but with lesser cars in the mid 70's and the NZ Rally use to go through town every year through the 70's 80's. Good time to be growing up. Bruce Mclaren, Denny Hulme and Chris Amon Kiwi legends.

There are a so many inaccuracies like Wellington bomber were built in WW2 not WW1, large parts of Brooklands still exists, (well worth a visit), the major damage was done to the circuit when they extended the main runway cutting through the banking.

The impression is that the creators of this video may not be able to find England with Sat Nav! Goodwood certainly became a racing circuit after WWII - but the Festival of Speed did not start until 1993. What is important is the role of successive Dukes of Richmond, to whom we all owe a great deal.

Goodwood Festival of speed, Isle of Mann TT, Doing a fast lap of the Nurburgring. All on my bucket list of things to see/do before my time is up. Also non motor sport related, you can add attending a soccer match at Wembley, running with the bulls in Pamplona, diving on the great barrier reef (before it's all destroyed) and checking out Ayers rock while i'm in the neighborhood and visiting Patagonia. I know it's ambitious, realistically i probably won't accomplish them all, at least 2-3 of them and I'd be happy. It's fun to dream though, isn't it? 😀

In 1904 Vanderbilt held auto races on a large track he built on Long Island New York, it was called the Vanderbilt cup. This predated many other racing venues, as well as being larger (23 miles) and having over 200,000 spectators and drivers and cars from all over Europe and the states.

Wow. When you said Aspendale Racing Track in Australia was the first race track in the world, I recognised the name instantly as also being the same name of a suburb near Melbourne my family has a lot of history with. But Australia is massive, what are the odds right? Well turns out the track which stopped racing in the 1930's was located less than a kilometre from where my Auntie lived for over 20 years around the 90's. Not only that, but the town itself was named after the race track! I then spent the next 2 hours reading up on the history of Aspendale the town, used to be a haven for artists around the 50s and 60s. The Rolling Stones and Marcel Marcou swimming at the same beach I spent nearly every summer at growing up. I know this isnt relevant to anyone else. Just a really fascinating rabbit hole for me personally. But I wouldve had no idea about any of this if not for learning about the Aspendale Race Track roughly 4 hours ago lol.
