Happy New Year Dawn!! I am so sick of the elitist attitudes of some people making a big deal of others buying a dupe. You are so right about the hierarchy and that kind of mindset was one of the reasons why I watch less videos these days. None of my close friends care about bags and unfortunately in my area, there are major safety concerns in regards to being seen with lux items. I mostly use a Lululemon bag and their popularity has skyrocketed in my neck of the woods because they are so convenient and under the radar. I openly admit I will never be able to afford a Birkin and it doesn't bother if people categorize me as "poor."

I also feel that I have to be very careful what bags I bring to work because I don’t feel comfortable taking one of my really obvious bags in town for just that reason. I can’t go out and buy a Birkin cash right now unless I sold a bunch of bags, and I don’t want one anyway! No shame!

Yes, a bag is bag! The brand doesn't/shouldn't define a person. Outside of this niche community, most folks don't know an Hermes bag from a TJ Maxx bag--as hard as it might be for those who love bags to believe. But I'm loving that so many folks in this community are open to other brands and more affordable options. Buy what you love and can afford, and ENJOY it! Some of the most sobering videos on KZbin are the ones that show bag repairs and or/someone cutting up an expensive bag to inspect the leather and craftsmanship to let viewers "behind the curtain." The results often show that really expensive bags are made very similarly to their less expensive counterparts.

A lot of people appear to be in denial or choose to ignore that other than the name, many contemporary brands match up to or surpass luxury brands. Yes, the big luxury houses do have some more expensive details and extras, but do those justify the markup??? That’s made me much more selective in what I buy. But don’t tell me that I’m beneath someone for not choosing to spend on certain luxury brands.

Love your commentary on this! You’re right - a lot of people don’t really care about what bag you carry - unless they’re handbag lovers, fashion enthusiast, or luxury enthusiasts. Walmart doing their version of a Birkin style is not surprising and the hype is just that. There is subtle luxury judgement in the space. The informative content is valuable, but I like to enter judge free zones because that’s the context I look for in an already judgemental world ❤

I have had Dior bags but I have never been a huge fan because they are overpriced and don’t hold value. As far as the recent controversy, it’s nothing new and has been happening with brands for years.

I agree! Not sure why there is such a flap over this one lookalike. I hadn’t heard of it until I saw Autumn’s video a couple of days ago. I guess maybe it’s the mean comments on tik tok and other social media platforms that’s fanning the flames. People shouldn’t be so judgmental, but I guess it’s part of human nature, especially nowadays. Sad really. This whole thing is so silly with the judgment and the drama. I like watching people light up when they get a bag they love - doesn’t matter if it’s expensive or not - if anything, getting a dupe is the gateway drug to the real thing because once you pop, you’ll want to spend more and more to get that same high. So I see people being excited about the werkin’ when dupes have been around forever and it melts my tiny H sized heart. I wish I could get that excited about getting the real thing but at this point it’s just fills an empty spot in a larger collection.

I'm so over people being all high and mighty about this. Who cares? Brands borrow designs from each other. Hermes, itself, stole the LV Alma design for one of its bags. Goyard, Gucci and Dior (amongst others) have their verson of the Speedy. The Coach Cassie came before the LV Pochette Metis. Dupes are fine. Absolutely fine.

Happy New Year Dawn! I hope 2025 is a great one for you! For me the problem with the deliberate fakes is the copyright infringement & intellectual property violations, which are unlawful. I think it’s normal and fine to aspire to owning high end luxury, but it’s not fine to make or buy fakes that infringe on someone else’s work. Not only is it stealing from the brands it finances child labor, the drug trade & terrorism.
