Randy Traywick - or as he's professionally known: Randy Travis - has had a successful, though not particularly easy, life. Travis was the talk of the town - Nashville, Tennessee, that is - through the 80's and 90's, and into the new millennium. However, self-destructive patterns that had followed Travis since his youth came to a head in the 2010's, when a divorce from his wife/manager and various substance abuse problems saw him entering a downward spiral. First came the arrests, then a major health event from which Travis may never fully recover. Despite this, the singer hasn't abandoned his career. Here's the untold truth of Randy Travis.

When music is labeled "too" something, my guess is that record label types don't feel people will like it for the most part. By doing this, they underestimate peoples' musical tastes. I'm into so many bands, solo acts and duos, it's not even funny. Literally thousands, meaning multiple genres. There's an act I like(wish I could remember who they are, it might be Fishbone) who I read were considered "too black for 'white' radio, too white for 'black' radio". To clear this up, they have always been an all-black band, but they are very much in the vein of The Red Hot Chili Peppers. In fact, Fishbone and The Chilis are friends, coming up on the L.A. alternative scene together. Vastly underrated band, indeed. I'm a rocker first and foremost, but not your average rocker. I distill genres down to 2: Good music and bad music. Or, as I prefer to say: It rocks, or it don't. Saying Randy Travis is "too country" could've prevented some people from giving him a chance back then. "Well, country is ok, but not if it's 'too country'". As for Fishbone(or whatever act it was), "too" black or white could also hinder some from giving them a chance. Just be musically adventurous, you might just surprise yourself. I should know, I used to be blinded by genre blinders, too. It rocks, or it don't.
