Are you kidding? Ohio brought out the best funk bands of the 70s and 80s and I’m from Illinois. All we had were Earth, Wind & Fire although they were considered to be the top Funk band due to their great crossover success but I would rate Ohio as THE #1 home of the funk bands period!

@@feeleffect amen! I have always told folks that were all “ hip hop is east coast-type sound” I’d remind folks all the music came from Ohio and a few groups from Philly. James Brown stayed in OH doing jams.

Heaven Must Be Like This, Honey, Fire, Love Rollercoaster, I Want To Be Free plus other songs of theirs! So glad that their music will live on forever! May the anazing members, that are gone, all Rest In Power and Peace! 🎺 🎸 🎹 🎸 🙏

Up front, I’m from Illinois and Ohio clearly had the best funk banks nationally. Nobody could touch Ohio’s success with the funk bands. Lakeside, Midnight Star,Zapp Band, Ohio Players, Faze-O, Slave, Booty Collins and let’s not forget The Isley Brothers!!! You guys killed it in the funk game. Nobody came close!

Yes, but you forgot so many more especially the Grammy Award winner the Dazzling Dazz Band and Switch (band). And, if you want to add singing groups and singers, Ojays, LeVert, Rude Boys, Bobby Womack, James Ingram, Howard Hewett, Tracy Chapman, Macy Gray etc.

I agree; I'm from Detroit and back in 70s and 80s, it's clear to see that no other place on Earth could touch the output of the funk groups coming from Dayton-like it was something in the water...and I know that the Isley Brothers and Bootsy's Rubberband were from Cincinatti-and the Dazz Band were from Cleveland. And Sun and Heatwave were also from Dayton; Ohio was definitely killing it back then. 2-8-23.

As quite as it's kept, before Earth, Wind And Fire, The Commodores, Parliament-Funkadelic, Chic and Kool And The Gang(when they went pop in the 80s), The Ohio Players were supposed to be the first Black group in music history to have THREE MILLION SELLING, PLATINUM AWARD ALBUMS IN A ROW(each Platinum equals a million copies sold)for their three Mercury albums: "Skin Tight"-"Fire"-and the "Honey" albums! 2-8-23.

I remember buying “Fire” on 45rpm before it blew up in 1975 and taking it to my 7th grade class to play. Nobody in the class had heard of it but everyone liked it. I’m 60 and almost all of one of my favorite bands are gone. Sad that funk faded out in the 90’s. I miss the self contained bands and the Ohio Players were among the Elite bands at their pinnacle.

The rumor is true, their is a woman screaming in the song Love Rollercoaster. Play the song at the 2:30 mark and you can hear it for yourself. Back then it was said that a woman got stabbed the hallway. And it was said back then that the band didn't catch it until the song had sold a million copies and then they took it out.

James Williams is a BAD drummer. One of the greatest ever. These guys are under-celebrated by the USA in general. As far as I'm concerned, it's pure bs. These guys are epic. I know they are in oldies lists, but still, their production was unbelievable, top of the game. It's hard to be funky on coke I would say. Funk is not uptight. And you can't play drunk period, so maybe weed, but then you forget your part or lyrics. Oh well, you make music to make the ultimate party, then you have to be sober to execute it. What a contradiction. The fact Ohio Players are not in the RnR HOF is a travesty.
