Same. Enjoy some of these vids but thought this would be more info, less comedy... Especially as given how some areas (like where I live), mt bikers are still having to fight for trail access, any pointers on ettiquette that help us with our image to others are actually really useful esp. for new riders....

TheLoneRideR Always, always, always yield the right of way to others using the trail and go out of your way to come off as polite and friendly as possible! Also, pick up trash along the trail! A little extra kindness and respect really goes a long way to help change people’s minds when it comes to granting trail access or permission to do anything really. Even if these practices don’t grant you more trail access/change your riding situation, the world around you will be a better place in general 😃

Fashion policing is for roadies? Aren't modern mtbers the one who banned the use of skinsuits in downhill mountain biking just because it looks "gay" and they want to imitate the motocross riders. Before the fashionistas arrived in mtb, mtbers used to wear leather, lycra, aerodynamic helmets, etc. Mountain biking nowadays is all about fashion.

A lot of crashes are as fast and bad as dudes riding MX trails, yet a ff bicycle helmet (which is much lighter than an MX) is too hot and heavy? (Not to mention every other piece of armor cyclists refuse to wear). Take a break if you're hot. Sweat showers off. You look stupider with cracked ribs and face, and more importantly can't ride.

Ten unwritten rules that do not involve superficial fashion advice: 1) If you end up at a line the you can't quite do, try it again and keep doing this until you get it right if your body allows you too. I can't tell you how satisfying it is being able to ride a line I had trouble with the first time i rode it. 2) Braking around corners is a huge no no. Doing this will eat the corners away and cause brake bumps that slow you down, remove traction and are generally uncomfortable. Practising around corners is one of the best things you can learn on a bike. 3) Never look down on someone whose gear is less expensive as yours. It creates a toxic subculture where people think they're better than you because they can afford better stuff. The rider makes the bike, not the other way round. 4) if ever you're riding at night (this goes for commuters, too) use head and taillights. In some parts of the world not having them at night involves a hefty fine ($700 in Australia IIRC). Even without that element, they're truly lifesaving. 5) If ever you stop on the trails move off to the side, even if you think you're the only rider there. 6) If you see any large loose rocks or sticks in the middle of the trail or branches that shouldn't be there, take the time to get rid of it if you can. You're saving someone else from a bad day. 7) Remember to bring your provisions! Sharing tools might work for a time, but don't be that person whose always without them and CERTAINLY don't be the one whose constantly asking for food/water from other riders. Doesn't look good. 8) Learn to maintain your bike. There's a lot your bike shop can do better, but being able to do general maintenance is a worthwhile skill to get in to. 9) Prepare for the worst. Cycling is a dangerous sport that can end really badly in an instant. Remember to wear any necessary safety equipment and always take some basic first aid stuff and your phone with you. I take a power bank with me on especially long rides for this reason. 10) As much as we all want to send the biggest gap, it's always good to understand your limits. Try to push yourself too far in one go and chances are it'll end badly. Take your time if you do want to push your limits and work your way up from where you are now if you want. Nobody is forcing you to be the best. It's OK to be a beginner with shoddy stuff as we've all been there, so have fun! If there's anything else you can think of, or about changes to my list, mention them down below.

When you see someone in a t-shirt and shorts and ordinary footwear when on flats it just means they couldn't give a crap about all the marketing BS in the bike industry. Most (not all) bike wear is ordinary outdoor kit but with slightly different cuts and inflated price tags.

"Skate shoes are a great option for flat pedals". In this video you are told to never wear training shoes and they showed a clip of vans, which are awesome for BMX, Skate, Scooter, and MTB. Especially because of the honeycomb pattern on the ball of the shoes. Fits perfectly with the platform pedals pegs.

I watch GMNB all the time and generally love the content. I have been going through older videos recently. This one is the most pretentious POS I have watched, especially with regards to what helmets to wear. Wear what makes you comfortable and don't care what others think. It is your safety and your body so do what makes you feel the safest. Besides, most people don't care what others have on. Be better than this @GMBN!

Some hiking or running shoes are actually perfectly fine for flat pedals with spikes. As long as the material and sole pattern provide good grip. And more often than not, the sole on those shoes will last you longer than the rest of those shoes. To be completely honest, I'll always rather buy some cheaper hiking shoes with a suitable sole than expensive MTB shoes. Reason being that whatever shoes I buy for outdoor activities, they won't see the end of their second season and won't be looking pretty before the end of their first one.

DON'T use Strava on 'illegal' trails! Just stop it. Don't record rides on private land! yeah, ok, maybe we shouldn't ride there to begin. But trails that have been in private forests for tests are getting shut down because people are GPS-ing them for the world to see. If the land owner didn't notice then that means the trail is not destructive or bad.

What about the Bell Super 2R? I wear mine as full face most of the time when riding downhill trails or jumps, I take it off completely to ride back up to the top, if it's mellow XC type trails or with the kids then I take off the chin bar and stick it in my pack. One thing I have heard is not to wear shin protection as it's not cool and you should only cover the knees! I wear Endura soft shin/knee pads, they stop my shins getting gashed by foliage and any flat pedal strikes, I don't think they are too warm. Also heard the same on elbow protection, some say do, some say don't, I don't currently but I am considering getting some. TBH can't we just all wear and ride in whatever we want and let our biking speak for itself and not be judged on what we wear?

Jonathan Martinez well, they say that the full face is perfect for downhill, but you dont want to be seen in an xc bike with those. those are like two extrems. downhill in one end and xc on the other. With enduro definetely closer to dh. If i am not wrong enduro is going uphill and then downhill. which is as dangerous as dh.

Vans or converse are perfect for riding though... you can tell exactly where you are on the pedals, they are on the lighter side of most shoes youll find, and the grip is pretty damn good Also look stupid wearing a full face on a fe bike? More protection which means you can push it harder and feel fairly safe about it, you can get better mounts for a camera, and most full faces have speaker pockets for tunes while riding. Video was pretty ego driven tbh

So Lycra leggings and baggies together make for a solid winter combination. Also a lycra jersey with pockets under a more mountain bikey shirt allows for no backpack and decent warmth in the crisper months. But I'll agree that lycra jersey with baggies does look a bit silly! You know you're so right though, just get on your bike and have fun, who gives a crap what you're wearing or what you're doing, just getting out there is better then 99.9% of people who can't be bothered to escape the couch )

Surprised at the comment about FF, ok so a full on DH maybe hot and heavier but what about Met Parachute, bell super 2r? At the end of the day it comes down to protection..having a dig at someone who chooses a full face for safety is a bit childish. But I I guess they will be the ones with their teeth in tact at the end of the day!! Also consider the ability of the rider ? a novice would welcome extra protection. I also know people who ride hard tails and xc bikes (120 travel ) as a secondary bike in the winter but still ride much more aggressive than I could ever do, big drops jumps etc. They still would benefit a ff. Open face on trail and ff in bike parks for me !! but if I could afford a 3 rd helmet I wouldn't hesitate to get a super 2r and wear it on xc trails

That's a great idea! I just got into that and wow it's super fun! Wish someone would've told me years ago! Not only a scheduled night ride but just having a decent light so you don't have to cancel your late afternoon ride when you stayed too late at work and it's getting too close to dark to make a lap at your favorite trails. The light gives you the confidence to go ahead and ride and not worry if you come out 20 minutes after sun down! That's how I found night riding! If you haven't tried it yet you owe it to yourself to do so!
