A little extra kindness and respect really goes a long way to help change people’s minds when it comes to granting trail access or permission to do anything really. Ten unwritten rules that do not involve superficial fashion advice: 1) If you end up at a line the you can't quite do, try it again and keep doing this until you get it right if your body allows you too. I can't tell you how satisfying it is being able to ride a line I had trouble with the first time i rode it. 2) Braking around corners is a huge no no. Doing this will eat the corners away and cause brake bumps that slow you down, remove traction and are generally uncomfortable. Practising around corners is one of the best things you can learn on a bike. 3) Never look down on someone whose gear is less expensive as yours. It creates a toxic subculture where people think they're better than you because they can afford better stuff. The rider makes the bike, not the other way round. 4) if ever you're riding at night (this goes for commuters, too) use head and taillights. In some parts of the world not having them at night involves a hefty fine ($700 in Australia IIRC). Even without that element, they're truly lifesaving. 5) If ever you stop on the trails move off to the side, even if you think you're the only rider there. 6) If you see any large loose rocks or sticks in the middle of the trail or branches that shouldn't be there, take the time to get rid of it if you can. You're saving someone else from a bad day. 7) Remember to bring your provisions! Sharing tools might work for a time, but don't be that person whose always without them and CERTAINLY don't be the one whose constantly asking for food/water from other riders. Doesn't look good. 8) Learn to maintain your bike. There's a lot your bike shop can do better, but being able to do general maintenance is a worthwhile skill to get in to. 9) Prepare for the worst. Cycling is a dangerous sport that can end really badly in an instant. Remember to wear any necessary safety equipment and always take some basic first aid stuff and your phone with you. I take a power bank with me on especially long rides for this reason. 10) As much as we all want to send the biggest gap, it's always good to understand your limits. Try to push yourself too far in one go and chances are it'll end badly. Take your time if you do want to push your limits and work your way up from where you are now if you want. Nobody is forcing you to be the best. It's OK to be a beginner with shoddy stuff as we've all been there, so have fun! If there's anything else you can think of, or about changes to my list, mention them down below.

And more often than not, the sole on those shoes will last you longer than the rest of those shoes. To be completely honest, I'll always rather buy some cheaper hiking shoes with a suitable sole than expensive MTB shoes. Reason being that whatever shoes I buy for outdoor activities, they won't see the end of their second season and won't be looking pretty before the end of their first one.

What about the Bell Super 2R? I wear mine as full face most of the time when riding downhill trails or jumps, I take it off completely to ride back up to the top, if it's mellow XC type trails or with the kids then I take off the chin bar and stick it in my pack. One thing I have heard is not to wear shin protection as it's not cool and you should only cover the knees! I wear Endura soft shin/knee pads, they stop my shins getting gashed by foliage and any flat pedal strikes, I don't think they are too warm. Also heard the same on elbow protection, some say do, some say don't, I don't currently but I am considering getting some. TBH can't we just all wear and ride in whatever we want and let our biking speak for itself and not be judged on what we wear?

Damn. That crash is absolutely scary - especially after you've seen how the poor guy looks now. Just makes you wonder about all the places you've been to that could have ended the same or worse. To be honest though, he was on a nimble bike with 20" wheels. To my knowledge, it happened because his wheel got stuck.

I wear my full face on just the downhill bits of trails near me, as i don't have a normal bike helmet as I've come straight from motocross and am just used to my full face. If i get a normal style helmet eventually should i still switch to the full face for the downhilly style bits? im not sure what to call the trails as they consist mostly of flowy sharp gravel corners and a few rocky crops and stuff?

Wait, wait, wait hold your horses why I can't ware full-face something like MET Parachute or Bell Super on XC, is that makes riding down a bit safer? Why is this so taboo? Also Lycra/Baggies I ware long lycra and buggies on top when its winner. I don't know what winner you have there but I'm not going to ride in baggies when its near 0 degrees...
@TheEpicLew10ant8 жыл бұрын
I assume they're hinting at baggy top and lycra shorts or vice versa. Lycra such as undershorts/under armour is accepted - I'm yet to know a serious MTB who doesn't use 'second skin' lycra layers in the cold.

If full face helmets are exclusive for downhill i wonder why Enduro World Series riders wear it all the time ?? i was thinking about buy a lightweight full face helmet like Met Parachute or Bell Super 2R riding my enduro bike ... what do you think about this ? I am super fan from Spain !!
@walternunessoltermann76528 жыл бұрын
Jonathan Martinez well, they say that the full face is perfect for downhill, but you dont want to be seen in an xc bike with those. those are like two extrems. downhill in one end and xc on the other. With enduro definetely closer to dh. If i am not wrong enduro is going uphill and then downhill. which is as dangerous as dh.

I love my full face helmet when fat biking in the winter in the midwest US. The warmth is great, and I feel full protected riding through ice and heavy snow. It is, however, way to hot from the Spring and Summer months.

@Travis-wp6hq7 жыл бұрын
Vans or converse are perfect for riding though... you can tell exactly where you are on the pedals, they are on the lighter side of most shoes youll find, and the grip is pretty damn good Also look stupid wearing a full face on a fe bike? More protection which means you can push it harder and feel fairly safe about it, you can get better mounts for a camera, and most full faces have speaker pockets for tunes while riding. Video was pretty ego driven tbh

I wear Specialized Atlas XC Pro Short when riding and IMO it blurs the Lycra/baggie line pretty darn well. Thoughts?
@Kingsoupturbo8 жыл бұрын
So Lycra leggings and baggies together make for a solid winter combination. Also a lycra jersey with pockets under a more mountain bikey shirt allows for no backpack and decent warmth in the crisper months. But I'll agree that lycra jersey with baggies does look a bit silly! You know you're so right though, just get on your bike and have fun, who gives a crap what you're wearing or what you're doing, just getting out there is better then 99.9% of people who can't be bothered to escape the couch )

@@RW-nl9up i would strongly disagree. You will discover your face has no function any longer after you plant it into a rock or tumble down the side of a mountain and get wrapped up against a tree. If you are riding fire roads then it really isnt usefull but any trails going DH with roots and rocks on it i would definitely go for a full face just based on the amount of people in the comment section listing their facial injuries

What about courtesy rules? When you're climbing a steep hill but for some reason have to stop, you should make room so your mates can pass you. Or in bikeparks: when you need a brake after a section, wait for other riders until you can enter the trail again.

It's much easier for the downhill rider to get going again, which is why this isn't an "unwritten" rule, but an IMBA written trail rule. Downhill riders yield to uphill riders, except on one way or downhill specific trails.

I'm confused about how to interpret this advice. i just switched from shimano SPD pedals to flat pedals and in other videos I've seen recommendations to get shoes with flat soles with a consistent pattern, like the one shown in the video here. supposedly this would be great for plat pedals. It would be nice to know *why* the shoes portrayed here are not good?

Convertible pants over lycra rocks! Start out cold with legs on, take off as it heats up. Ride shorts, then put the legs on when you get to the overgrown section. I've gotta judge cloths on performance, not looks. If they look good also, that's fine (until you wash out in the mud@)

@jambat17798 жыл бұрын
Surprised at the comment about FF, ok so a full on DH maybe hot and heavier but what about Met Parachute, bell super 2r? At the end of the day it comes down to protection..having a dig at someone who chooses a full face for safety is a bit childish. But I I guess they will be the ones with their teeth in tact at the end of the day!! Also consider the ability of the rider ? a novice would welcome extra protection. I also know people who ride hard tails and xc bikes (120 travel ) as a secondary bike in the winter but still ride much more aggressive than I could ever do, big drops jumps etc. They still would benefit a ff. Open face on trail and ff in bike parks for me !! but if I could afford a 3 rd helmet I wouldn't hesitate to get a super 2r and wear it on xc trails

That's a great idea! I just got into that and wow it's super fun! Wish someone would've told me years ago! Not only a scheduled night ride but just having a decent light so you don't have to cancel your late afternoon ride when you stayed too late at work and it's getting too close to dark to make a lap at your favorite trails. The light gives you the confidence to go ahead and ride and not worry if you come out 20 minutes after sun down! That's how I found night riding! If you haven't tried it yet you owe it to yourself to do so!
