My biggest pet peeve is when I'm running on a trail and there is a person with unleashed dogs. Leash laws exist for a reason and I have almost been bit a few times out on my long runs
@Kelly_Ben
@Kelly_Ben 2 жыл бұрын
Guilty. I've had German Shepherds who needed loads more mental and physical exercise than what I'd give on leash. However, they've both been well trained and completely non aggressive. Running off leash on trails is one of the biggest joys of my (and their) lives, and I'll continue to do so with all my dogs, making sure first that they're not a danger to others. I usually put a cheerful bandana on them to make them friendlier looking, and consider it breed public relations for other trail users to be able to interact with my "scary wolves " IF they choose to, so they can experience firsthand that dogs do not equal danger. Bad owners equal danger.

People will not remember the 1000 times but the 1001st time. If you want them to have more physical exercise you might consider urban mushing or going running with your dogs, if that is possible, Besides, there really are people who are afraid of dogs, just as there are people who are scared of spiders or mice,...

One of my rules, which is similar to that last one, is don't assume you know everything about another runner. For example, if you see someone running slower than you, don't tell them to "pick it up!" because you have no idea what kind of training they're doing or what their speeds are. Also, don't assume that what works for you will work for someone else. As a person with some chronic illnesses, certain fuels or even gear doesn't work for me the way it would for someone else and its really frustrating to hear those suggestions when I don't ask!

Run against traffic is one. I constantly see runners running with traffic on roads, which is very dangerous. Runners run against traffic because it's much easier for us to see cars oncoming and get out of the way than it is to hear them behind us, especially with the rise of electric cars which don't make any noise at all.

100% with you on that one. I am amazed how many don't realise that this is the approach that all people on foot should use when walking on country roads. It was something I remember being told when I was at school.
@miski1969
@miski1969 2 жыл бұрын
I sort of agree but I make an exception for hills & bends. I don't want to be running into traffic approaching a blind bend or the brow of a steepish hill so I try & get on the side of the road where I'll give cars the longest time to see me. Road races on open roads also require you to run with the traffic in the UK, at least all the ones I've done.
@hairyairey
@hairyairey 2 жыл бұрын
@@miski1969 yes I have noticed this with road events running with the traffic, then the marshalls will shout at you to follow the highway code! Which says the opposite. In my experience it seems that England Athletics treats the roads like a giant running track so you run on the left anti-clockwise. I don't like it I do not feel at all safe. Although it also says that large groups should stick to the left!

There should be a rule for pacers and those running in a pace group during a race: Do not take over the entire course! Not everyone wants to run at your group's pace! maybe thats a swiss thing but if another runner greets you while passing you, GREET THEM BACK! 😂😂😂 Oh and more importantly if you see somebody out of breath, sitting or even lying on the ground. Take a second and ask them if they are okay. You can take a PR the next time but a little team spirit never hurts. I never did this until someone passed out on the 400m track. If it had been in the forest I would not have seen the person a second time and who knows when the next person will run by.

You should never run so close behind someone that it they stop you run into them. Except in a race.

Listing yo music makes it harder to pick road noise. I can be very dangerous. Even getting runover by a cyclist in a park is painful for both of you.

coming from a track and xc runner, number 8 is really funny bc u get no personal space when there are 500 people in the race and about 200m in the course funnels down from 150m across to like 3m across

Rule 8 goes very well with rule 1. Rule 1 is very much like driving. If you are behind someone then it is YOUR responsibility to leave enough room to stop. If a person in front of you stops dead for no apparent reason and you run into the back of them then it is YOUR own STUPID fault for being so close.

Notice to car drivers - don't drive when I'm trying to run! I don't like the traffic fumes, and waiting to cross a road completely b*ggers up trying to get a PB and makes my Garmin tell me off for going too slow!

I'm going to go against the flow and say, *don't* run the pace of the slowest runner. A combination of arthritic knees and Covid weight gain has made me the slowest runner by far at my weekly run group, but I hate making my friends feel obligated to slow to my pace. Especially because it's hard to run say a 12:00 mile if your natural pace is 8:30. I'd much rather my friends run their own paces, while I try to chase them. We'll catch up and chat at the end of the run.

Announce when you’re passing someone, “on your left”. Also for any cyclists watching. In the UK maybe it’s “on your right”?
@marccarlton2163

It's normal to pass on the left on a running track so long as you are going anti clockwise. On paths it can vary depending on the width of the path, other users etc.

An old man on a bike almost drove into me. I was on the orange lane which is for pedestrians, bikes are supposed to be on the red lane. I gestured to him to move over to the bike lane, he stopped and probably started swearing but i was on a fast pace and didn’t wanna deal with a meaningless confrontation. Everyone in Korea knows that red lanes are bike lanes.
