Analogy of two birds The Upanishads affirm that meditation on the inner Self is the highest form of spiritual practice. This Self remains concealed in the innermost depths of the heart and soul, is immortal, subtle and not recognised by the senses or the mind. Many techniques for meditation on the Self, ranging from the easy to the tough to suit the varying levels of individual endowments, are suggested. The analogy of the two birds mentioned in the Katopanishad, and also in the Mundaka and Svetasvatara, unfolds many nuances about the jivatma who is essentially a unique blend of the human and the divine, pointed out Sri Goda Venkateswara Sastrigal in a discourse. Two birds are shown to dwell on the same tree as inseparable companions. One tastes the fruits in the tree while the other merely watches. The former represents the individual self and the latter the Supreme soul. The entire gamut of the bitter-sweet human experience in a jivatma’s life is represented by the bird that is involved in tasting the fruit. The onlooker, the Paramatma, represents the fact that the same jivatma can also view the experience as an outsider and not get affected by the joy and sorrow which are temporary experiences. It is possible to distance oneself from the grief or happiness in worldly experiences and seek instead the immortal experience by choosing to align with the on-looking Self that does not eat the fruit. He then comes closer to God and by His grace the soul is lifted to the higher plane. When the object of devout meditation and the devotee abide together the process of meditation is easily performed. This analogy vividly captures the value of the wonderful in-built capacity that places a jivatma in dual roles as both a participant and a witness.

The ultimate aim of Upanishads is to know "Who am I?" And their final teachings and conclusions are described in Four Mahāvākyas: 1.प्रज्ञानम् ब्रह्म (prajñānam brahman) - “Consciousness is Brahman” from the Aitareya Upanishad of the Rig Veda 2.अयम् आत्मा ब्रह्म (ayam ātmā brahma) - “This Self (Atmān) is Brahman” from the Mandukya Upanishad of the Atharva Veda 3.तत् त्वम् असि (tat tvam asi) - “You are That” from the Chandogya Upanishad of the Sama Veda 4.अहम् ब्रह्म अस्मि (aham brahmāsmi) - “I am Brahman” from the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad of the Yajur Veda

There are three things in Vedanta; Atma (self), Brahman (ultimate reality) and maya (world). Advaita (non duality) says atma and brahman are same, vishishtadvaita (qualified non duality) says atma is like water drop and Brahman is the sea. Dvaita (duality) says atma and Brahman are separate. There’s a story of Lord Hanuman explaining nicely to reconcile three paths. He said the when working in the consciousness of the body He and Lord Rama (God) is different, when working in the consciousness of the mind He and Rama are not that different (Rama is the sea and Hanuman is the drop of the water), when working in the consciousness of the Self (atma) He and Rama (God) are same. For me, personally, I prefer (mostly) advaita and vishishtadvaita.

1)Krishna opening his mouth and showing the entire universe inside him is non duality.(oneness with god ie he is everything and everything is in him). 2) Krishna showing his supreme form to Arjun is duality.(he is separate from the universe and the ultimate master of every everything , that’s why we see people being born from his one mouth and then dying and being absorbed into his other mouth, meaning the supreme god is a separate entity and everything is his manifestation ) 3) Krishna playing with friends and sneaking secretly into the store room of butter(like a human) and at same time lifting a mountain with his pinky(like a god) is an example of oneness with distinction

The "Brahman" in Upanishads is universally accepted as Narayana (i.e., Vishnu). Vedas clearly declare that it is Narayana, son of devaki (brahmanyo devaki putrah brahmanyo vishnur achyuta) who is the Highest Principle.

Namastey and om shanti dear brother and sister ...I wish u both a happy new year with health wealth and happiness.. its always a pleasure to see you both ...this video was interesting and amazing ...it mentioned about conciousness = aatman or brahman and connection of everything with brahman...it will take more than a life time to learn understand and realize this subject because it's infinite like sky and ocean ...there is no end to this subject ...because it will create confusion due to illussion or maya. So in order to simplify this infinite subject one need to focus on self as aatman or consciousness and feel the real nature of soul in thr form of peace and love and then understand supreme soul ( creator of infinite universe shiva) in the form of ocean of love and happiness and then it becomes a connection...and then one shall understand creator and creation and relation with ease

11:31 *interesting fact:* all the three greatest teachers shown here were Krishna devotees and have accepted that Vishnu alone is the one called Brahman in the Vedas. Shankaracharya: a great Krishna devotee himself, an incarnation of Shiva, says: Gita bhashya 10.8: *The highest Brahman is called Vasudeva* (a name of Krishna) Katha Upani. 1.3.9 bhashya: *the highest reality is Vishnu called Vasudeva* Vedanta Sutra 2.4.42 bhashya: *Narayana, who is higher than the formless, who is the highest Self, and the Self of all... that we are to meditate on this Lord alone we know full well from Smriti and Vedas.* Ramanujacarya: he says in Vedartha sangraha 1.53: *The supreme Brahman Narayana exists as the inner self of Shiva, Brahma and all other embodied beings.* Madhvacarya: says in Brahma sutra bhashya 1.2.26: *not being perfect and falling short of virtues, all other gods are considered non-brahman and Vishnu only in Brahman, the Lord*

Narayana who is Krishna also called Vishnu is Brahman. Are other gods also Brahman? Upanishads tell us: Maha Upanishad of Samaveda, mantra 1: *Before the creation, Narayana indeed alone existed, there was no Brahma, no Shiva,* no water, no Agni and Soma, no heaven and no earth here, no stars, no Sun, but only He, the Purusha alone. (Sanskrit: eko ha vai Narayana asit na brahma na cha shankarah) Note: this Upanishad was unanimously quoted by Adi Shankara, Ramanuja, Madhva, Vedanta Desika, Jiva goswami and other Vedantin gurus, so it is one of the most authentic Upanishads yet available to us.

The reference to two birds is misinterpreted in this video as Krishna clearly says in Gita that Atman is non-doer, and body is the doer and you are Atman the non-doer. Thus the two birds are Atman/Lord the non-doer and the jiva or body the doer which is suffering and by knowing the Atman jiva becomes free. In Gita itself Krishna says "I am the Atman dwelling in the heart of all beings" (10.20)

19:18 I'll try to explain in brief. *Oneness:* there is only one Self in reality. Multiplicity is delusion. Rest you understand well. *Oneness with distinctions:* there is multiplicity of souls but they're the same essence as God. Souls are not the "whole" but parts of the whole. Like drops in the ocean. Drop and ocean - both are water, same essence but drop is always lesser than ocean. Advaita says you're ocean, this says you're a part of the ocean. In liberation, we don't merge with God, losing our individuality but we share in His infinite bliss as His tiny parts. Just like at molecular level, water droplets are distinct from each other but have same qualities as ocean. It's a matter of quality and quantity. Advaita says quality and quantity wise, you're God Himself but this says you're one with God only in quality but not in quantity. *Dvaita:* souls are not the same essence as God and are wholly distinct. But God pervades the universe and the souls. He's seated inside the souls and is their witness and Lord. Like a realized being would say I'm the pure spirit self. Dvaita would say yes, but God pervades you and is your inner controller. And Roger, I think you've misunderstood it. It doesn't say God's not our source or God's not in this world. It says yes, God's presence fills all creation but God's not the same as you or a tree or anything. God is the inner controller of everything, including self realized beings. One similarity between the three: all 3 accept Vishnu only as God. Even Advaita. It's earliest literatures and teachers talk about Vishnu only as qualified Brahman. However during 17th century onwards, with the arrival of Appaya Dikshita (a Shaivite advaitin), they began to teach 4 other gods are Brahman, equally as Vishnu.

The difference in a short form:- 1. Oneness of god- everything emanates from same source. 2.Oneness with distinction- Everything emanates from brahman but we are distinct from brahman just like a water drop from ocean is oneness but drop itself cannot makeup the ocean. There's a difference. 3. Total distinct- We are the consciousness. Our consciousness is always trying to know truth, but in this material world we are in delusions. So the truth is krishna, the and we are trying to merge with him the eternal truth that brings to concept of moksha. First shankaracharya bought unity in culturally divided india by oneness. But that also bought some mayavadis saying we are also god, so to show difference Ramanuja charya and madvacharya showed the difference. This is very highest knowledge to be understood. Who ever understands this are in very higher consciousness already, don't lose, be in conscious state always. Hare krishna

Awesome Video and great reaction. In last 2 years I was introduced to knowledge in Upanishads by Swami Sarvapriyananda, the one who presides over the Vend antic society, NY(from Ramakrishna Order). Many of these texts are explained in plain language by the Swami. Please watch his numerous videos and how he explains this concepts and approaches to realize your true self. It is eye opening for many of Hindus. Unfortunately the Indian Education system should have included these topics in curriculum to keep the continuity of learning in the Indian Society.. It is sad that even being Hindus we are not aware of the great knowledge from our ancient texts. One of my goal is to study these in depth in a more focused way. That would be something ..

Actually Non-duality alone can bring devotion as in Gita lord says see yourself in everyone and everything in your own self. Adi Shankara is greatest of devotees as well as non-dualist. He wrote more than 100 poems in devotion to different Gods around 50 of them to Shiva and others to Krishna, Ganesha and Shakti etc. That's why Brahman is identified with different Gods in different Upanishads like in Svetasvatar Upanishad or Kaivalya or Isha and many other dozen it is identified with Shiva similarly in some with Vishnu, in some with Ganesha. Similarly their are more than 50 Gitas. Bhagvad Gita is popular only because Adi Shankara wrote are commentary on it. Dualists who see difference can not see the pain of others as their own because they think they are different they see difference even among Gods while Shankaracharya in 1000 names of Vishnu says that these are names of Shiva also dualism goes directly against teachings of Gita, where lord says rise above duality as it is real cause of suffering

Fine with Advaita but Hari dvesh is unacceptable. "He wrote more than 100 poems, 50 on Shiva" No proof that he wrote any of the stotras. Not a single shred of evidence. These are authored by later day writers and merely attributed to Adi Shankara. Narayana bhattathiri, an advaitin, in Narayaniyam chap 90 says that out of all Sakala forms, Adi Shankara was devoted only to Vishnu and wrote works glorifying Him only. So there's no question of glorifying Shiva and other gods. "In Shvetash. Up. Brahman is identified with Shiva" Only outwardly. Adi Shankara, in his Vishnu sahasranaam bhashya, attributes it to Vishnu, like all other Vaishnava acharyas. "More than 50 gitas" Most of which are pretty late writings (16-18th century). Plus, they're found in unimportant books like Devi Gita in Devi Bhagavatam which is an Upa Purana, not even a Purana. Ishvara Gita in Kurma Purana which is Tamsik. Unlike these, BG is found in Itihasa, which is more authentic. Plus, it's the oldest Gita. And ask yourself - why didn't Adi Shankara write commentary on BG, not on other gitas? Why did he write commentary on Vishnu sahasranaam, not on Shiva Sahasranaam or lalita sahasranaam? Answer is simple: either these didn't exist in his day (which is true) or he simply didn't care about them.

"Shankaracharya says these are names of Shiva also" Where? Kindly show me the exact citation. I like to learn. As far as I know, his statements in Sahasranaam bhashya only cause problems to Shiva bhaktas. Commenting on the name Bhutabhrit and Bhutakrit, he says that Brahma and Rudra are like instruments used by Bhagavan but Bhagavan Himself is Vishnu. Commenting on the name Keshava, he says that Brahma and Shiva are born from the limbs of Vishnu. This makes one think he considered Shiva a jiva.

"I am a weakling. I have no will of my own. All actions are His'. God is my guardian and protector. I worship him with love and devotion. for, I am his humble servant." ~Dwaita "There are no two. There is only One. I am not the body. I am not the mind. I am the Self. Aham Brahmasmi. I am that transcendental consciousness (nirguna parabrahman - without attributes) that stands as the basis for all creation (maya) yet beyond everything that is created." ~Adwaita "God is the indweller of my heart. I worship the Saguna Brahman (God with attributes) that pervades everything as the spirit. Brahman although independent and absolute, is everything (creation included). I am the spirit/soul/self whose existence is dependent on the universal spirit (Vishnu)." ~Vishistadwaita In Dwaita, one sees oneself as a separate entity from God. In this school of philosophy, one is exclusively devoted to a personal God. In Adwaita, emphasis is laid on transcendental God as pure consciousness. It has more to do with the subjective nature of God. All that is objective i.e the creation is discarded as Maya or as an illusion, in spite of the fact that Maya also owes its existence to brahman. Vishistadwaita, emphasis on the fact that individual soul is part and parcel of the super soul. Being a part of the super soul does not mean that the supersoul and the individual soul are exactly the same.

*_Very Superficial and brief differences in three main schools of thought of Hinduism:_* Aadi Shankaraachaarya's *Kevala Advaita Vedaanta* says that the atman is completely identical with brahman. According to him, the atman experiences a false sense of plurality and individuality when under the influence of the delusive power of maya. While maya has the ambiguous ontological status of being neither real nor unreal, the only true reality is brahman. A soul becomes liberated from the cycle of rebirth (punar-janma) by realizing that its very experience of samsara is an illusion; its true identity is the singular objectless consciousness that constitutes pure being or brahman. He sees Brahman in 5 identical forms, Shiva, Vishnu, Surya(Sun God), Durgaa , Ganesha. Etc Raamaanujaachaarya's *Vishishta Advaita* says that the souls share the essential nature of brahman. The souls are eternal particles issuing from brahman, who as their source retains its transcendence. _But Ramanuja maintains Brahman's distinct difference from the human soul and his supremacy as creator and redeemer._ Ramanuja identifies Brahman with Vishnu, holding that brahman is saguna, i.e. possesses attributes, in contrast to Sankara’s attributeless or “nirguna” brahman. Etc Madhvaachaarya's *Tattvavaada/Dvaita* says that God and the Atman exist as independent realities, and these are distinct, being said that Brahman( Only Vishnu according to him, just like Ramanuja ) is independent, and souls are dependent on him. Etc

Absolute oneness means the individual soul (atma) is essentially of the same nature as the Supersoul (paramatma)...but with distinctions because the Supersoul is the all-knowing silent observer in all creation (Brahmaand)...the second bird on the mythical branch of the tree...whereas the individual soul/Atma is the forgetful first bird that eats the fruit of the tree and hence enjoys/suffers the good & bad effects of material existence. Hence the purpose of existence is for the soul to reconnect with its true nature....reconnect with God or Absolute Truth....in other words self-realization....then the duality converges into oneness!

*The analogy of two birds:* it's earliest mention is in Rig Veda. It says: Brahman and the individual Self are like two birds. Individual Self is in suffering but Brahman is not. When the bird of individual Self sees the bird of Brahman the Lord, it is liberated. Just as two birds cannot become one, individual Self cannot become Brahman. Both can be friends though and the individual Self can serve Brahman. In Rig Veda, the Brahman bird is called "the Lord of great glory who is worshipped by everyone" - everyone meaning even liberated souls. Krishna also says in Gita 15.6-7 that He is greater than both bound and liberated souls.

Adi Shankaracharya said that atman and brahman are one and after death if atman attains salvation then it merges in brahman (super soul) (absolute oneness). Sri Ramanujan said that atman and brahman are one but after death atman does not merge with brahman even after attaining salvation. The existence of both remains separate. Sri Madhwa acharya said that both atman and brahman are separate from the beginning of time and remain separate even after atman attains salvation. Sri Ramanujan is considered more authentic according to the Vedic scriptures . But there are different sects in Hinduism, some believe in Shankaracharya, some believe in Sri Ramanujan and Sri Madhwa Acharya.

I too think Ramanuja is the closest to the truth out of the 3 of them. Yet all 3 have agreed that Vishnu alone is Brahman and we must adore Him with Bhakti for Nirvana, so I guess we can follow that. When you do bhakti, there's no need to bother for dry rigorous philosophies making sense of highest reality. There's just love there, much less dry intellectualism.

You see actually All 3 paths are just same just in different positions..............A seeker 1st begins to develop from "absolute duality" where he thinks that there are 2 things :- Bramh and Creation and both are different , then once he has developed his mind he now enters the zone of "oneness with distinction" and then when he has developed even further , at last he enters the zone of Absolute Oneness. It's Very clear if looked through Shri Krishna :-1)When he is doing leela everyone around him don't see him as Bramh but as a creation(Normal Human). But even after that they are devoted. (Absolute Duality) 2)Then in Geeta he says ,I am everything and yet I am different (Oneness with Distinction) 3)And then at last he shows his Vishwa Roop where he shows that literally everything in universe is Krishna (Absolute Oneness ).

If you want to understand duality... Take quantum physics as an example.. Atom is both wave and particle in Nature.. It depends upon the observer.. God is also like that..in mortal perception we see differences between creation and creator.. But on higher perception we can see that both are same... Duality coming into the picture because of our perception.. In reality there's no duality

Many people are confused which philosophy to choose. They get into dry intellectual debates that take them nowhere. Yet Adi Shankara, the founder of Advaita, himself says: *"Worship Govinda, worship Govinda, worship Govinda, you foolish mind. Mere rules of grammar would not save you at the hour of death"* -- Bhaj govindam, mantra 1 (Sanskrit: bhaja govindaṁ bhaja govindaṁ govindaṁ bhaja mūḍha-mate | samprāpte sannihite kāle nahi nahi rakṣati ḍukṛṅkaraṇe ||) Note: Govinda is a name of Krishna

@@Himanshu_Singh793 Unborn Rudra: He is the ParaBrahman or self of all. He is represented in formless Linga form or Saguna Upasakas also call him SadaShiva. He is unborn and eternal. That became unique, that became distinguished, that became great, that became excellent, that became Brahman, that became Tapas, that became Truth: through that he (Vratya) was born. He grew, he became great, he became Mahadeva. He gained the lordship of the Gods. He became Ishana. He became Eka Vratya. He held a bow, even that Bow of Indra. Absolute Oneness means God,beings, world. Everything is one. And inseparable. Indivisible. Oneness with distinction means God , a separate being, is the source of all beings and the worlds. But still all these with God is one family. Absolute duality means we can never be God. We cannot even be one with God. We can only worship God. God , who is unborn, eternal, without death, is unchanging. But we , Atman, are subject to change, by association with the subtle body, which is mind, intelligence and ego , which are part of inferior creation.

Upanishad doesn't deny to dual or non-dual but it is a fact that it mostly inclines towards the non-dual systems. Dual supports please don't attack me.... first read and understand the Upanishads. Mases starts with the dual perspective...with meditation and time they create a different but inseparable relation with Brahman (Qualified non-dualism) and then develop oneness with Brahman(non-dual). Vivekanand has beautifully described this - He said the 3 steps.. 1- duality---- Dvait philosoby of Madhva. 2- Qualified Non-Dual---Vishisth-Advait of Ramanuja. 3-Non-Dual--Advait philosophy of Adi-Shankara. He considers Advait the final step. As per him... One should respect every step.. there is importance of each and every step. And Upanishad is for the followers of every path.
