The upgrade orbs only get one bounce to make it back to the tank otherwise they despawn. All the upgrade orbs released at the far right of the screen couldn't make it back. They also despawn if they hit one of the returning ammo balls.

@@elmanzano2896 The race ended at 6:15. Cyan killed two upgrade crates at long range, so long the Cyan tank did not collect the upgrades while orange did. This allowed orange to use the powerful cannon earlier and longer, killing tougher crates at long range and preserving its health, while cyan kept pushing crates along and creating a pileup that was harder to ultimately destroy.

From 4:29 you can find that some upgrades (blue orbs) just disappeared before they can reach the cyan tank, making upgrading slower than orange. The 3rd stage (mortar) was indeed powerful but the range was very limited, which caused the ultimate defeat of cyan.
