A brief history of The Uptown Theatre in Washington DC. This "newsreel" includes footage of the world premiere of "The Hunt For Red October" and the Washington DC premiere of the restored version of "Spartacus".
Some of the video is old a therefore not very clear, but serves as a record of these two events at The Uptown

Thank you for this video . I was there too . At the 8:5-10 I was asking for ms Simmons signature . Actually, I asked her that I could hug her and she gave me a hug . Spartacus was and still is my favourite film . I found Tony Curtis’ signature and I am looking for Ms Simmons too

This "history" is in error in saying "How the West Was Won" was the only three-strip Cinerama film to play at the Uptown. MGM's "Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm" was shown before "West." The Uptown was converted for Cinerama around 1961 or 1962, a couple of years after the last Cinerama travelogue, "South Seas Adventure" ran downtown at the Warner Theater, which played all Cinerama films in DC from 1953 through 1959. The Uptown had been the home of 70mm Todd-AO films from 1955 to 1962 or so, with roadshow presentations of "Oklahoma!," "Around the World in 80 Days," "South Pacific" (all of which I saw in the theater) and others. After "West," the Uptown converted to single-projector 70mm Cinerama with "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World." The Cinerama world premiere of "2001," hosted by Arthur C. Clarke was held there on April 2, 1968. Stanley Kubrick did not attend, and was in New York City preparing for the New York premiere the following day. I saw "2001" at Uptown at least a dozen times in 1968 and 1969 and returned to the theater in late 2001 to the film's 2001 revival. Regrettably, all the Uptown projection equipment was abandon when digital projection came in, and the present owners, AMC, seems unmoved by the theater's history, even trying to dismantle its history UPTOWN marquee.

James, I made this documentary and you are right about Brothers Grimm. I worked at the Uptown as one of the projectionists from 1982 to 1985. When Cinerama came up in conversation, the only one that ever got mentioned was HTWWW. Nobody ever talked about Brothers Grimm. I will make the correction of the movie as soon as I can! Other than that, I hope you liked it!
