Simula 1 seems really neat, but I feel like it's going to be a bit of a flop. Does their target audience even exist outside of a few enthusiasts? I feel like a more successful product would be to make a very simple and inexpensive headset that can connect to your higher end PC that you already have for VR and just create tools that make productivity easier. This would be good from a comfort perspective, since you're not wearing a laptop on your face, and would create a large market for people who just want PCVR.

My guess is their distro relies on tight hardware integration to make everything work, maybe it would be too much cost to test driver builds for the many hardware options of a potential Linux setup. If Simula is open source, then maybe he can use that to create a modular DIY headset. Different companies could supply things like graphics cards and lens assemblies which would not only allow robust upgrading, but the ability to own the headset rather than Facebook feeling entitled to your hardware. I think at least half of the Quest community would like something like this.
@drlemon77292 жыл бұрын
Yep my hope is that vr goes in the direction of desktop pc's rather than smartphones or consoles
@DFX2KX2 жыл бұрын
it's certainly possible (like Framework making a DIY-friendly laptop chassis), but there's usually a price to be paid in doing so, cost, functionality, or ease-of-use. You can (and some of us did) turn a Cardboard headset into a cheap PCVR headset with an accelermeter and LCD, for instance. it was janky, though. Things like lenses would be tied to the chassis provider, since the optics have to line up down to the millimeter. And that's going to affect LCD selection. Video cards could be made separate, as the MXM standard exists, but not all of those graphics cards are the same exact shape. The Simula would have to sell *extremely* well for it's price point to be able to establish a new hardware standard.
@wiiu76402 жыл бұрын
@@DFX2KX Well I would like to think new hardware standards are not created by one entity. Look at PCs today, the reason the standards exist is because people like IEEE and USB made a standard for a specific component and not the other way around. Like I doubt Meta, or even Simula, will come up with the standard for something like water cooling in a standalone VR headset. It’s a risky thing to do as is, so I don’t foresee a product coming with it stock unless this modular design is used. Maybe we’ll see a company like slime come out with mod kits that work across the different hardware types. Basically the premise is to make it easy to mod any headset with just one universal kit. Third party car radios do something similar for the harnesses so you don’t have to solder then together. Something like that would create standards for that specific kit. I mean we already sort of see mod kits that allow the use of the Vive deluxe audio strap on other headsets. The only problem is actually making it work and having a market for these kits. A lot of people are nervous about modding their headset and understandably so. I think water cooling is an extreme mod that only people who water cool desktops should attempt, but at the same time I think that this may one day come stock in a headset because it’s the only way to stop it from overheating. After an hour of playing the Quest 2 it gets really hot. In the future when batteries get better on these headsets I think fan noise could be a real problem along with inadequate cooling capacities of a standard fan. The only way for the standalone market to really continue is if a modding community pops up for it. Google cardboard has a great community that has done some pretty awesome stuff which is why we have full body tracking from just webcams. I think that if they had the right hardware to work with that they could easily mod the headsets to be not only compatible with third party parts, but create computers that could connect to non-standalone headsets and convert them into standalone. That may sound crazy, but I always though to myself why HTC Vive had to be the only other wireless PCVR solution out there when you could hook something up to it that could compress and decompress the video at a cheaper cost on any headset. I would love to see a board that could connect to the index and is about the size of a raspberry pi that could perform similar to virtual desktop on the Quest 2. And why stop there, you could easily create something that could slip into your pockets that would allow you to run standalone apps like on the Quest. Being able to take the index with you to a friends house and not have to hook it up to a PC would be awesome and I bet a lot of people would pay some serious cash for that. If all of this was open source and 3D printable, then I bet it would get a really good reputation. The question is if someone will decide to make that. You can do a lot of things with the spare time you have, but do know how and will you do what I just said? I mean look at those DIY haptic gloves, it’s still really janky and he’s spent I think close to 2 years on the project. If he had more help it would probably go smoother, but if there is even one person it’s cool that we get to see it actually come about. There was the people making a kit for a DIY 3DOF headset, but I doubt that they will get anywhere close to making a 6DOF with standalone. Again, the problem is that no one entity can create every single standard and in some case multiple people create one standard so that their stuff works together. I think the major thing is getting Facebook to let you use openXR since everything is kind of based on it now. Basically if Facebook wants a headset to fail, al they would have to do is make it so openXR is incompatible with the DIY or other company’s headset. This is why the FTC is going after Meta for anticompetitive VR stuff. Anyway, I hope that people start doing some of this stuff. I know companies like Deca and Slime are good, but it really needs to be a bunch of consumers coming together to make mods for these things. If they all do something, then the mods will be really good and a community will be made which makes it harder to destroy (since it’s decentralized). (I swear I’m not a terrorist.) Someone has to stand up to Facebook and all the other big companies because we might not have cheap standalone VR in the future if we don’t.

There is no need to replace. It's like travelling to another planet. And that's why i can't agree with Apple. Also i am completely shure they just want their own AR platform which will be completely secured, just like other Apple devices.

Question: when will consumer VR streaming be available? I know of plutosphere but it's not public yet and other computer streaming like shadow isn't optimized for VR.
@Dtr1462 жыл бұрын
I am kind of tired of people comparing stuff to the price The availability of the quest 2. Facebook is positioning itself in the market so other companies will have a very hard time competing. What we need to be focusing on is can a company produce a quality headset for the money. Constantly comparing headsets to a headset that's literally being sold at a loss is not fair to them or to the consumer.

The problem with that is, for the majority of people, money's a finite object, especially as most people's only previous experience with VR was Cardboard. You *have* to address that elephant in the room if you want to sell a headset aimed at the same people. "Hey, we're not Facebook!" is worth a premium, but it better not be the *only* thing I get if I have to spend twice as much.
@Dtr1462 жыл бұрын
@@DFX2KX And there's a different argument you can have for the headsets that cost $500 too. They may have the same features as the quest too maybe one less or one more but their price is probably as low as they can go without losing too much money. People need to understand that to get off the Facebook platform they're going to have to pay more because Facebook is selling the headset at a loss. Comparing headsets to the quest it's not fair for developers who might not have other income streams to aid them and selling a headset at a loss. It makes the other companies look bad for not bleeding to make us happy.
@RabidDisposition2 жыл бұрын
To the huge majority of people, money is a key factor in purchasing items. I mean, why spend 1000 on a headset when you could spend 300 on one that does almost all of the same shit, and still have some money left over to buy your wife a gift? Money will always be the driving factor behind the majority of people's purchases. If other VR companies want to garner mainstream attention like the quest, they'll need to start competing on price. It's the only way to get the majority interested in something they arent already interested in.

The very first time I ever saw a VR headset was at MicroCenter. It was the Oculus Quest 1, and for some reason it stuck with me. I went to this museum that had a VR exhibit and after I tried it, I knew what I wanted. The Quest. That’s what got me into VR. So basically, if I hadn’t been to a MicroCenter, I would never have gotten into VR.

honestly....Facebook saw the opportunity and decided to buy Oculus and work hard on the project...every1 else saw the money that they were making and now they are doing it themeselves.... Facebook was first to jump on the VR horse which would only mean that it's fair for them to have the upper ground on this industry..... and that's coming from someone who dislikes the company but likes the tech.. They are doing it with a very affordable price and they have done nothing but make the metaverse become more real than ever. There's a reason we don't see 6 new company consoles each year... playstation, xbox and nintendo have the upperground why don't we start sueing them for having consoles as low as 400$? Makes no sense...
@the1anonymouse2 жыл бұрын
And realistically a fully connected metaverse would be, in essence, a VR web browser sure the browsers make money and there's money to be made in them but as long as anyone is still allowed to build their own VR sites just like websites, we don't have to worry

Microsoft and Sony are also coming under scrutiny for anti competitive practices as well, they'll likely be called up soon by the FTC as well for the same reasons facebook is. Nintendo isn't really doing much outside of the niche they've carved out for themselves, they are not in the same league as the previously mentioned companies.

I would expect someone like thrill to be a bit more vocal about it wether he likes it or not or what he thinks. I just find it weird that there's no comment aside from acknowledging that it will release in a week, just wondering if the silence is due to him not finding zenith type games interesting or if its due to negative feelings towards the game.

Open source world / api would be the way to go along with headsets that plug into graphics card on computer. It's the only way to go, because you have unlimited upgrade potential to make VR experience better, where if you have it built into the headset you have to buy entire new headset to improve the experience. I think VR may have saved desktop computing from it's slow painful death :D

Glad to see more open source stuff enter the VR space. I appreciate what Facebook has done for VR but they need to be taken down a peg and not be allowed to have the stranglehold they do on it. Looking forward to seeing what people do with the Simula and I got an eye on the Lynx R-1 as a cheaper open source option that'll hopefully be decent for gaming. Simula OS just looks crazy cool as well, I'm wondering if you'd be able to run it on a tower connected to other VR headsets? Would be really cool to start seeing VR desktops at the OS level.
