If one wants a “deep” and “philosophical” lesson or something bring up Absurdism and Albert Camus. But one could just boil it down to, “The universe is absurd, don’t try to make sense of it; Just enjoy the moment.”

@@StudioAlexOfficial Unlike Adventure Time, though, Bo-Bobo doesn’t take itself serious, even if there’s a motivation on what they have to go through. Plus, there’s no character assassination, because Bo-Bobo and the gang know they’re in a surrealist manga, and are having fun with the idea. One more thing: Don Patch is suppose to look like an Orange Sun, and yet in the translated Manga by Viz Media, they translated his name to Poppa Rocks… why they would want to name him that, I have no idea.

If there's any life message in Bobobo, it's to not to take yourself too seriously and learn to laugh and smile more often. Life is too short to focus on constant negatives that happen. Especially when it can negatively affect others around you. As Allen Alda once said "If we all don't go crazy every once in a while, we'll all go crazy." But that's just my take on it. Rereading this, this sounds like I'm saying "Lighten the (car horn noise) up and go (insert Wilhelm Scream here) nuts every once in a while!"

I sought out surreal, comedic anime because most films, shows and cartoons are so depressing, political, commercial, sexual, violent, mean, ultra serious and phony preachy. I JUST WANT TO ESCAPE REALITY AND LAUGH. I miss innocent, playful, humorous, fantasy entertainment like Gilligan's Island, The Flintstones, Wonder Woman starring Linda Carter, 3rd Rock From The Sun, HIghlander and movies like The Goonies, Escape From New York, Foxy Brown, 9 to 5 and Silverado. I'd kill for Sunday afternoon TV showing RERUNS of Bob Hope movies, musicals starring Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers and THE THREE STOOGES and SHAW BROTHERS KUNG FU movies! Bo Bo may not be popular but then again NOTHING is really popular anymore because everybody watches stuff RANDOMLY, sporadically, all at once or in weird stages. Fandom doesn't really exist anymore because everybody argues so much over make believe characters and owners have become hypervigilant over content that has become just extended commercials and marketing ploys. I think I am attracted to Bo Bo because its so ridiculous and super silly that it cannot be labelled or properly SOLD to anyone. It has no worth beyond bringing smiles and laughter to its viewers. BLESS THE CREATORS!

I liked few dubs growing up, largely because many English voice actors took me out of the scene by sounding like the _really_ didn't want to be there, but BoBoBo's and Saiyuki's VA's were clearly having a blast. 11:52-13:27 this is perhaps the most concise and clear explanation of the difficulties with Anime Dubs I've ever run across and I wish more of the Sub shall we say "Purists" could realise this. This of course does not excuse the mindnumbingly dumb/wierd script choices 4kids have done (and they should forever be used as an example of what NOT to do in that arena, like the infamous "Jelly Doughnut" meme).

Your talking points on this leads me to believe that you'd probably really enjoy Cromartie Highschool if you hadn't seen that. Its another show that plays around with anime tropes, has a ludicrously great English dub, and has a ton of visual gags throughout it. One of my favorite gags with the show was something I didn't even notice until re-watching where one of the main cast members who is a part of the group who shows up later in the series, actually has a speaking point in episode 1-2 episodes before he's introduced. You wouldn't realize that he's not supposed to even be there since its fairly early in the show and you don't know all the characters that well, but he's just randomly there for a single scene to give a comment on something like he's already a well established member of the group.

So what happened with the Manga is that Viz decided to keep going where they had stopped with the US Shonen Jump Magazine releases. They also decided to restart the volume and chapter numbering. Viz "volume 1, chapter 1" is actually Volume 11, chapter 110. It's absolutely deranged that they did this, and really showed just how little Viz gave a fuck at the time. The only way to have a physical copy of the earlier Bobobo chapters is to collect the monthly magazine.

I would say that Bobobo has the message that it's okay to be silly and funny, and that you should be silly and funny.

Funnily enough, the spanish dub was incredibly good for this series; it was done by a grop of people who directly ignore the plot whenever it's not funny in the language, change plots, names and whatever else to make it work. (For example, the scene with the alien and rice becomes a bttle between rice with tea, and rice with eggs (arroz a la cubana); and many words and wordplay is changed completely. it is a great spanish dub, I'd say superior to the engllish one. As another example, the Nato joke becomes a "oh god this man is trying to kidnap the "students" to eat them, the spanish verison also adds a bunch of different text and splash texts for attacks on top of the thing for added stupidity sometimes.

When you absolutely, positively, MUST have complete incomprehensible randomness and brainsplosions, this show... hands down, and if not this then Arakawa Under The Bridge. CAUSE NEITHER SERIES MAKES ANY GODDAMN SENSE!!!

As senseless as it is, it really started making sense once it clicked that the real fighting style wasn't FotNH at all, it was getting deeper and deeper into gags until someone forgot what was real.

I'm spanish and I can confirm that absolutely everything you said about how the dub makes it even better applies to our dub as well, point by point, and I think the reason as to why dubs of these series are so good is not only because of talent but because the voice actors were invested after growing attached to the show as much as we were back then. The joke conversion thing is one of the aspects you mention that I learned to appreciate as I grew older too. Great, great series. PS: Tennosuke was an instant laugh for me as a kid.

Visual storytelling while very difficult to pull off, if it's done right, can make a scene so much stronger and much more unforgettable. One perfect example of this is from Arcane: League of Legends, specifically the fight scene between Echo and Jinx, while it was short, it detailed so much about each character, their journey, their feelings for one another, both good and bad. That scene, much like the show, was a masterpiece. It had absolutely no dialogue, but so much was conveyed to the viewer. If you haven't, please go watch Arcane. I was always holding off on watching it because the game wasn't to my liking, but the show is a gem in my book. Amazing characters all across the board, all giving just the right amount of love. Go watch it!

When this popped up in recommended I had to watch it. Bobobo was my favorite show when I was a kid, my mum would watch anime like dragon ball or pokemon or one piece with me, but would always be so annoyed with bobobo saying "it's too weird", which is funny cause that's exactly why it's great

God, I saw Bobobo when I was a kid during it's CN airing, and thought it was hilarious. My parents didn't get it. I loved it though and really need to go back and watch it again because I only remember like a couple of scenes. One where he's whipping someone with seaweed just saying "Seaweed" repeatedly, and another where the gang is in this spirit board game thing, and Bobobo's spirit representation piece is a piece of toast with his face.

12:35 I took a class in German and that's one of the very first things I picked up on. You need to take liberty when translating words or you'll end up with the English translation of Zero Wing or "All Your Base Are Belong To Us." Translations is something of an art form that require bending or breaking the rules of both languages.

With the fan scene, you also seem to have forgotten the guy was a parody of someone discussing the ridiculousness of making noises into a fan, only to be humbled by the act being something everyone has done. When realizing he, himself, was the oddball for indicating he would never be involved in something so stupid, he caved and admitted he did it as well. It is a common theme for certain people to make fun of something in an attempt to gain clout when, in reality, they are just as guilty.

I may hate anime for it becoming crap, but this one, Bobobo, I love it. Edit: A funny thing people dont realize about translating Japanese to English, and vice versa, is that Japanese is one of the hardest languages for a native English speaker to learn, and the same is for a native Japanese English is the hardest language to learn. Take it from me, I lived there and meet my wife, her learning English was the most hilarious yet heart warming thing I ever saw. TLDR, English and Japanese are the 2 hardest languages to learn, so any otakus, calm your man tits.
