Many AAA devs are thinking of monetization first and product second. Basically how to wring as much profit as possible from consumers. Might as well just go into mobile game development

Honestly, the FOMO (feeling of missing out) is only really hurting the online stuff, the single-player and multi-player co-op type games that are all pve should aspire to be complete stories or at least complete campaigns to be played on launch. I don't mind extra zones and skins being added on for people that wanna toss money for it, but when they lock actual story parts or content from the main game behind a paywall, that's unacceptable to me. Then there's DLC, which is fine to be paid for but it shouldn't change your experience of the original base game, it should just add new content. Like the Titans expansion for Age of Mythology is a great example. There was still the full main story, they just added another story campaign and, woo now there's titans in your Random Map versus mode!

I agree very much to the DLC. I played age of mythology myself... Man those were the good times.

I actually feel for a lot of developers crunch is a fucking blight on society and needs to be eradicated that being said the only reason why they have to crunch is because they higher-ups are telling them to nickel and dime players as much as they can or they have been set unrealistic deadlines I'm not saying there are not lazy developers out there who are terrified by the idea of putting effort in but we need to not forget that hard-working developers do exist I would like to see a lot more games have year-long early access or beta and have between 7 and 10 years development time I do not mind having fewer games if the games are going to be much higher quality and I don't just mean in terms of graphics I mean in terms I would happily pay more money on a game that hasn't been worked as hard on has no DLC or microtransactions And has lower graphical fidelity if it would destroy crunch This being said baldur's gate 3 should be seen as a raising of bar it should not be the standard but it should be what people are aiming at in terms of quality

I agree. I find crunch to be awful and unacceptable. Though I will say that devs aren't all at fault. I'd say their are a lot of devs that want to make good games. Maybe even more than the some. But as long as big corporate sets these deadlines, games will suffer unfortunately.
