Note: the original vampires and mirrors thing had to do with the mirror's being backed with reflective silver. It was the pure silver that rejected a vampire's image, other reflections still work fine. Problem being that new writers over time completely forgot this, and mirrors these days aren't even made with silver anymore.
@Crisjola3 жыл бұрын
Also the fact that vampires couldn't cross running water (reasons) made it so in moving water like a spring or river they wouldn't see their reflection. Also it's nice to see a bunch of people here in the comment who know the silver thing! :D Also I think… very vaguely… that either Buffy or The Vampire Diaries actually explained this. I know someone in the last two decades mentioned the silver thing because it was one hell of a plot point. Something something "easier to hide identities when you don't show up in photos" something something.
@NODnuke453 жыл бұрын
Another fun theory (not my theory and I don't know if it's true) I learned that, supposedly the reason that supernatural beings considered to have some kind of connection to hell or "the forces of darkness" are weak to silver. It's because silver is what the Romans paid Judas to betray Jesus, and because much of the very first lore about vampires was made by extremely religious folk, that's supposedly why vampires, werewolves, and other things are weak to silver. Although personally, I think it should probably be the opposite, after all if it was silver that Judas betrayed Jesus for, wouldn't that make it a symbol of evil? And shouldn't it then make supernatural beings with some kind of link to hell stronger, not weaker? But anyway that last part is just my take on it.

Daybreakers is an AWESOME movie. The ending is fantastic. Very creative. One of the BEST scenes is when the mutant vampires are chained together and being pulled out into the sun. There's a quick clip of some people walking by who turn away so they don't have to watch. The cool thing about this is that the people are dressed in fashions from the 30s in Germany. The woman's hat is especially iconic. If you watch some of the videos here of Berlin in the 30s, ALL the women are wearing hats like that. It's a powerful metaphor showing how regular people turn away so they don't have to watch the terrible things being done to a minority group. Also, I just noticed this in your description. You say that Charles thinks being a vampire is great because it cured him of cancer. At the beginning of I am Legend, a scientist is being interviewed on TV, and she says that, yes, they have found a cure for cancer. This, of course, contains the virus that turns humans into vampires.

The flammability, explosions, and sunlight sensitivity might actually be a hint to what is keeping them going. If the cells were converting to something that was a high energy substitute (think having fuel rods for blood and flesh, where some of the cell mass is now entirely designed around energy production to replace oxygen from anything from heat absorption to other things being stored in chemical released energy) it might explain the ability for them to keep going without oxygen, some sort of high efficacy storage. Might also explain the need for blood and the damage done with the fake blood, the body is converting new blood into the high efficacy battery material, fake blood doesn't work, and sets off a chain reaction (think trying to throw a high energy charge into paper causing it to ignite, just more so since this would have to be HIGH energy for that big a boom.) The degraded state is when there's no new material to change, so their batteries are wearing out. Also might explain the light sensitivity, it could create a run away chain reaction by causing a chemical reaction, that causes fire, same for structural damage from stab wounds to the heart, think a live wire exposed, or perhaps multiple parts of a chemical conversion process normally kept separate hitting each other, runaway chain reaction and blam. Heart might be a large reservoir for the chemical that causes the energy conversion. This also could be the conversion of tissue too quickly to the humanoid state from the battery state when exposed to sunlight (perhaps the bodies state rushing to change back to avoid the chemical chain reaction from sunlight overdose, but its not a process that works on its own, and is the vampire version of an immune system overreaction (which causes you to EEEEEEXXXPLOOOOOOODEE), and why water and cooling allow you to change back, sort of, seeing as the blood changes to a rapid dose cure. Would also explain the whole exploding into fire instead of jelly if basically vampire are the human equivalent of pressurized fuel containing its own fuse. Though you'd think that that would still either need more splat, or a bigger boom :P.

Not science but I can explain the supernatural lack of reflection with mythology! The traditional explanation for vampires not showing up in mirrors is that mirrors were made from silver which is a pure metal, vampires being impure and traditionally soulless do not show up. This also would've prevented them from showing up in early photos. Modern cameras don't have anything to do with silver. I mean neither do modern mirrors but maybe they had a weird silver mirror resurgence. Worldbuilding I guess.
@Crisjola3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, and more modern stories use the fact that silver itself is an antimicrobial so unless they go the "mirrors reflect your soul and Vampires don't have a soul" route and instead stick to a virus or something even deemed impure by "god" or what have you (such as deals to become demons as men-thinking along the lines of Hellsing's Alucard) then you won't show up in old mirrors or non-digital cameras. Pleasantly surprised to find another Vampire lore nerd here! :D

@Crisjola3 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure. I know werewolves are in Irish mythology, and Fae/Elves/"people under the hills" (I believe that's what one name for the Fae translates to) are all over Scandinavian mythology as well, where as Werewolves seem to be a Middle Ages thing that picked up with science clashing with religion. I know that the Seelie and Unseelie and the "creation myth" of the Celtics got really badly Christianized when people were trying to record the "totally *not* gods, you guys!!!" mythology of Ireland (and some of Scotland) by Christian scholars/monks/writers at the time. Plus "the fae" are equivalent to elves from Norse myth. Though I do 100% agree that Vampires (at least as we know them from mythology) are very much an Eastern Europe thing. Same with "death flyers" like Zburators. There was a lot more concern about people coming back from the dead in Eastern Europe as opposed to other parts of the world, which I find fascinating. Also most cultures have some sort of hellhound/ghost dog/Fae-dog/etc that lures/drags its victims to the plane of existence where it originated from.

I think in original lore, vampires they couldn’t see them selves in mirrors is because of the layer of silver which it stopped them from seeing their reflection. Unless all reflective things are made of silver or has a layer of silver then sure they can’t see themselves, but I highly doubt literally every reflective surface has a coating of silver. And if this was the case in the movie then couldn’t they just make mirrors with out silver, but instead coating of aluminum or just reflective glass? The only reasoning I can think of is that their reflection just disappears, but they can still be recorded because it’s not a mirror I guess.

I feel like the bird exclusive bat probably COULD subsist on mammal blood but can't because of morphological reasons like teeth or behavioral reasons where it could physically it just simply won't.
@AltoStratusX13 жыл бұрын
@Luna Tenebra it is exactly due to a physiological difference! (lol difference in bird and and mammal blood is by definition physiological). After doing some reading I can give you the reason. Yes bird blood and mammal blood is different that (was never my debate.) Bird blood cells have organelles and mammels do not. The physiological reason white winged vamp bats and hairy legged vampire bats do not tend to drink mammal blood (they can and it gives them the same nutrients) is because in order to "drink" the blood they need to introduce an plasminogen activators to break apart blood clots so they can continue to drink the blood as a liquid. So all 3 species of bats CAN and do drink mammal blood, just the bird exclusive (hairy legged vampire bats) WON'T usually waste its time unless there is need due to the fact it does not possess the right physiological adaptations to do so efficiently. In regards to the original question of why couldn't vampires drink animal blood the examples of vampire bats is a poor one since all 3 have been shown to drink human, cattle and goat blood when necessary and thus still derive nutrition from all sources. I'm not trying to have an argument, your comment just inspired me to look all this up as I find it fascinating and I wanted to share it lol. Cheers.

That actually makes more sense - as the vampires here learned the hard way. Vampires are apex predators and can only survive with a lot of prey. A few vampires overall and a healthy human populace is not a problem - there's always enough food. Many vampires and a dwindling amount of humans will also lead to the destruction of the vampires.

@@ShadowFox10587O Yes, it's interesting to see what vampires would do when they didn't have to hide. The main change to make to the story in this case should be how they get their blood without completely killing off humans. Like, they buy it. Something I always wondered about how sunlight is harmful to vampires but not other forms of light. It seems that it has less to do with sunlight itself and more to do with the ultraviolet radiation that is emitted from sunlight.
@RoanokeGaming3 жыл бұрын
which is odd as reflective UV radiation would still be damaging I imagine
@Crisjola3 жыл бұрын
I've read a few stories/seen a few where reflected light hurts, but doesn't kill them outright. Also it totally depends on which branch of vampirism someone decides to write: if you go the supernatural route (turned into demons and losing their souls but possessing the bodies of a human) then sunlight basically destroys the meatsuit because the thing that is possessing it the demon, can't do more than keep it in stasis. Usually the supernatural routes that go this way also have vampires desiccate if they don't get blood since the demon is still basically sane just holding a meatsuit that can't function. If the story goes the (almost) fully sci-fi route then even lessened UV rays that function as "high tech" silver (silver being an alchemical writing touchstone for purity) should be able to burn or at least hurt a vampire because of the antimicrobial aspect of The Sun. Presumably it's why in almost all vampire fiction, setting them ablaze (with or without the sunlight) is a good way to end them. As a random side note since I'm writing my own dark fantasy story with vampires in it, I chose to use a harder to quantify reason for turning (basically a slightly more reader friendly version of "bubble universe theory" without having to debate "plane," "dimension," "alternate universe," and "parallel universe" because that just gets confusing as a *writer* ) where over 50% of humanity's DNA has been altered thanks to that exact Earth being a nexus point, and thus, depending on the type of creature (there are three different "species" of Vampires along with a lot of other things) then it depends on if you can or can't be exposed to sunlight. Those who basically have latent DNA activated can because they're *technically* a dhampir though there's no biological difference between the original vampire and the human with activated DNA. Those who are possessed meatsuits (think less body hopping and much more flammable) are weak to every Vampire trope in the book except for their "native soil" since the body is possessed and kept alive by what amounts to a "demon"-these guys burst into flame in the sun because of supernatural "impurities" in their souls. The third kind I'm still fleshing out because my original field of study was physics not bio chem so I'm trying to work on a good way to have there be a virus or something more scientific (since that is the point of the series, blending science, religion, history, and myth to explain how the world might work) to have a third type of vampire that is more resilient than the "demon who possessed a meatsuit less effectively than Supernatural's demons" but also doesn't have a set of latent genetics that give them powers that don't really jive with human abilities. Regardless of which of the three in my story, you can absolutely end any of them by dousing them in flammable liquid and lighting them up like the Fourth of July. I always respected The Strain (it's my understanding the books go into much more detail but I'm a bit of a scaredy-cat to get *much* more detail than the show already gave) for pulling that trigger on almost "full science Vamps." Even if the last season sort of lost the plot.
@thomasjoychild49623 жыл бұрын
@@Crisjola The Strain's vampires aren't "full science" (the third book reveals the first ones literally arose from the dismembered parts of the angel of death) in that the destruction of an "elder" will instantly kill every vampire descended from them, also that killing said elders is done by blowing up the PLACE of their origin, not them. It's all very science-ey apart from that though.

Why aren't they breeding the humans? Isn't that literally the thing we do right now with cows? I feel like this movie didn't understand that one concept. Cattle are cattle because they can be bred to make more cattle. If you can't breed an animal in captivity then there's no point in domesticating it. Human child birth doesn't discriminate between captive or not, and as such you could literally treat the captive humans like actual cows and just breed a new generation of blood givers. Infinite blood solved. No fancy technology needed. We got free range humans, caged humans, spicy humans, greasy humans, some people like their humans mixed, some like their humans to be pure Chinese! "Our humans are fed red meat and fish during their bleeding years, making their blood rich and tasty!" Some companies might brag. That's right. Steak fed humans. Much better than those whimpy corn fed ones. This society could work, it's just that the writers don't understand economics.

@@quartzskull8772 In my hypothetical world the vampires have been raising humans as cattle since the beginning. Also, fun fact about the difference here.. you don't need to bleed them dry. Even only pregnant women will need to not be bled for food. Children as young as 14 can give blood safely every few months, with a bit more taken than your average blood drive since they wouldn't have any real rights or anything. Once an arbitrary but functional age is reached then the humans can be bled completely. Like 65. The movie also shows that diluting blood is a viable option. Even 20% blood is enough to sustain your average vampire for the most part. Combining the current system, which is blood dilution and rationing, with my system would net the Vampires and ever growing and sustainable flow of blood.
@quartzskull87723 жыл бұрын

20:04Here we see a subsider licking blood off the wall and it got me thinking If not consuming blood turns a vampire to a subsider, can drinking it after you've changed turn you back into a vampire? There was a comic book turned into a tv series not long ago call iZombie in which a woman doctor turned coroner after she turned into a zombie in a world in which if you eat human brains or a regular basis, you can keep your human personality and sense of self. as long as you eat brains, your hair turns white and your skin turns extremely pale (You can dye your hair and use skin bronzing products to disguise yourself as human though) The zombie doctor, Olivia Moore (Liv Moore for short, pun included) can even live in the same apartment with her human best friend without fear from attack as long as she's fed and meing a coroner, she has an endless supply of brains There is a side effect though Like in the movie Warm Bodies, when she eats a brain, she is forced to take on the memories and personality of the person whose brain she's eaten until she eats another brain and takes on THAT persons memories and personality The downside of the zombie transformation is that IF she doesn't eat brains for some unknown amount of time, the zombie loses their former humanity turning into a feral, shambling "normal" zombie known in their world as a Romero after George Romero The thing is, if the zombie turns into a Romero, even if they eat as many brains as they possibly can, their human personality will never return Would this be true for the subsiders as well? In the movie Day Breakers, we see Edward start to change by getting longer ears but by drinking human blood, he changes back to normal If he turned full subsider, would he turn back into a human again?

Speaking as someone who works in the 'Blood Sciences' department in a hospital laboratory (so Biochemistry, Haematology, and Blood Transfusion) the reason they probably couldn't just grow human blood from stem cells is because the technology doesn't really exist outside of the lab. Theoretically you can grow the cells, yes, but the the exact composition of red cells to white cells to theomocytes is trickier. This would be an increadibly useful theraputic tool in patients if it existed. Also, the blood contains many other things which probably give it 'flavour' to the vampires such as proteins, hormones, electrolytes/salt ions, lipids, antibodies, sugars, dissolved gases, cell metabolic waste, ect. It also maintains a delicate equilibrium that makes it more alkaline because of the dissolved carbon dioxide that gets dissolved and move to the lungs for excretion via breathing.These are all created by cells in tissue that release those into the blood stream, they're not made in the bone marrow.
